Wheeler Peak condos are located 1.2 miles up from taos ski valley's base area on Twining/Kachina rd. Follow the signs to the bavarian and hiker's parking! This 1.2 mile, well maintained gravel road, requires 4wd or tire chains in the winter in snowy conditions. Taos Mountain Haven is in building 300, on the second level, across the street from the hiker parking lot and within walking distance (5-8 minutes) from the bavarian, phoenix grill and chair lift 4. Look for our Wheeler Peak Condo sign on your left and the green metal roofs.

We live to ski at Taos Ski Valley as do our 6 children and 2 grandchildren. We are sure you will feel the magic and charm of this valley and will treasure your mountain experience. Our condo is a very, very special place to us and our children. We hope you will treat it with care and also enjoy it as much as we do.

You have got to see these VIEWS to understand why this property!!
The views!! This is absolutey the best view in the valley. And of course the proximity to lift 4 and the bavarian lodge are also a major plus to our location. You feel like you have your own private ski area when you walk over in the morning and boot up in the phoenix grill and stand first in line at chair 4 to ski first tracks down from the top. Our modern new condo is decorated beautifully with warm colors, leather sofa, stone fireplace and heated floors.
Very nice place & we enjoyed our stay very much.
The condo met our expectations based on the listing w/ a few minor exceptions/comments:
- Seemed even roomier than the pictures
- The walk to the lift was a little longer than 5 minutes (<10). If you ski part of the way, that helps. Take the hiker's parking (William Lake trail) route.
- Kitchen could use more cutlery & a potato peeler
- Liked that the pantry & fridge had leftovers (mostly non-perishable). We used some & left some.
- Used the crock pot -- we find crock pot meals to be handy on ski vacations (nice to come in to a warm meal at the end of the day)
- Be aware you have to pack out trash when you leave. We did did find some recycling at the dumpsters (glass & aluminum).
We really enjoyed our stay at the Wheeler Peak Condos, but a few caveats that I wish I'd seen prior to booking - The Condos are at about 10,000 feet above sea level, which is a big change for those of us coming from lower elevations. We had one adult experience severe altitude sickness (and had to rent a place in Taos for a few nights to get her acclimated) and then our son overdid it playing in the snow and skiing and also had a bad case of altitude sickness. Obviously no fault of the owners, but I didn't realize just how high the Condos are - a full 1,000 feet above even the Taos Ski Valley base, which may have been enough to make the difference.
The second caveat is how difficult the logistics were. There isn't a Taos Valley shuttle that stops at the condos and while the "walk to lift 4" is possible, it is not particularly convenient or easy in the snow. It is about 0.4 miles to the Bavarian or Lift 4, which is further than I was lead to believe and isn't an easy walk in ski boots or skiis. Since we were skiing with our 4-year old, we thought we'd ski/walk over in the morning, ski down the green trail and drop him at ski-school. The walk alone would have worn him out. My husband did the walk a few times at the end of the day, but bottom line is that the condo isn't as close to Lift 4 as we expected. So, instead there was way more time spent driving up and down from the Taos Ski Valley each morning and evening (or parking during the day) than we expected. 4-wheel drive or chains are DEFINITELY required for the drive.
The condo itself was fantastic - beautifully decorated, just the right size, absolutely comfortable.
What a great place to stay. Thanks so much for sharing your condo with us. We stayed the 12th thru 18th Dec 2015. We arrived just after 15 inches of snow which made the skiing perfect. The Condo is up the mountain from the ski resort so like the instructions said, you will need a 4 wheel drive or something with chains to get up the hills. We got lost and called the owners. Sharry stayed on the phone with us and guided us all the way to the condo. Thanks Sharry! The condo has everything you need and is warm and comfy. The condo Manager Dominic is just a great guy and is always available. He answered a lot of questions I had about the resort. Thanks Dominic! The view from the condo from the front porch is indescribable and if it weren’t so cold we would have been out there all the time. We could see the snowcats grooming the trails while eating breakfast. The drive from the condo to the resort is a short 5 to 10 minutes depending on the road conditions. If you are looking for nightlife etc., then you should probably stay in Taos. We were there for skiing and skiing is what we did. We skied 5 days straight. We can’t say enough great things about the condo and if we go back next year we will be staying there for sure.
