About Helen and Arlin Briley

My husband and I presently live in St. Petersburg, Florida.

However, it has always been a given that we would "go home" to Michigan when Arlin retires. I was a property manager for 25 years, so when we bought the fully furnished lakefront home, sharing it with visitors was a natural.

Helen and Arlin Briley purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Helen and Arlin Briley chose Johannesburg

We had rented at Lake Louise (some maps still refer to it as Lewis Lake) on a previous vacation and loved the location...secluded, waterfront. Yet close to family and friends and on the "beaten path" (M32) to town.

The floor plan and interior are truly unique and unlike other Michigan "cabins".

Since the cottage was furnished already furnished, we just added kitchenware and spruced up the walls,, and installed a washer and dryer. We also added a 42 inch flat screen HDTV over the fireplace, and installed satellite TV.

So many Michigan cottages are dark, with stuffed animal heads on knotty pine walls and red shag carpet. This is completely different. The colors are bright and cheerful, and the prow design windows give a wide-open feel.

What makes this cottage unique

The first thing I noticed was the contemporary architecture and decorating. I had never seen "prow" windows, but the light that they afford is amazing.

The main floor feels like being on a yacht. One sees the deck, the railing and the water from the living room and both bedrooms. It is the largest kitchen I have ever had with a dishwasher and disposal and a window over the kitchen sink. There is a large dining island when it is too cold for dinner on the deck.

There is an unfinished basement, so there is room to grow.

The setting is quiet and serene, however we are close enough to the main road (M-32) that we know we won't be "snowed in" in wintertime.

The cottage is close enough to Gaylord that we can easily get to "town" to enjoy all that it has to offer. More about that later.

Gaylord lies on the 45th Parallel and in the middle of the tip of the mitt-shaped state of Michigan.

Cozy Winter Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful weeks stay in early February to capture the snow and wintry landscape. The cabin was perfect. Very clean, updated and nicely furnished with a beautiful view of the lake and all the necessary amenities. We loved it! The driveway was cleared of snow on a regular basis, firewood and starter was plentiful and kitchen was well stocked. The great room/kitchen made for a very roomy and homey feel. All around we were very pleased and our hostess was most helpful and accommodating. Gaylord in winter was great, pubs and restaurants were cozy and the food was good. People were over the top friendly wherever we went. Highly recommend this property and Gaylord for a getaway.

Gorgeous place with tons of thoughtful extras

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend, but I would have certainly been happy to stay longer! This is a beautiful home, meticulously maintained. The owners have provided everything you could possibly want, from a wide assortment of maps and brochures for area attractions, which we made use of, to an extra toothbrush, which we didn't! The view from the deck, as well as the surrounding area, is lovely. We would definitely like to return.

Lovely place, and great owners!

  • 5 of 5

We were there for three weeks. We really liked it. Comfortable furniture which we consider important for a long stay. No beach, but we knew that beforehand. Nice porch for afternoon reading. Lots of nice touches like plenty of hangers, some basic supplies like laundry soap and kitchen items like tea, coffee and condiments, and nice bedding. We hope to rent again next year.

Relaxing family time

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was a perfect getaway for our family. We loved the location which made it easy to take day trips to Traverse City, Avalanche Bay and Boyne for some skiing. With two kids it was nice to have separate bathrooms as well as the washer/dryer. Our favorite part was playing games together at night with a nice fire burning. The owners thought of everything we needed from firewood to cooking spices and even the hot chocolate. Our kids have already asked when we can go back.

Michigan Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect. It was just as described. The view was amazing. The weather was just what we needed. The Florida heat was terrible this year so spending a week in Michigan was wonderful. We wished that we had more time to spend there. It was just what my husband and I needed, peace and quite. We hope the cottage is available next year.
