Take a step back in time to the Old West. It doesn't get much more atmospheric than this, folks. A real piece of West Texas history, La Casa Vieja is a gorgeously restored home in Marathon, Texas that was originally an old farmhouse built in 1917. Now, nearly 100 years later, it is a beautiful little hacienda, complete with a casita at the rear of the property that can accommodate additional guests. Located at the foot of Big Bend National Park and just a few blocks from the world-famous Gage Hotel, this property is a stunner. With custom woodwork throughout, this delicately-appointed 950-square-foot home sits on a corner lot and offers a beautiful enclosed private patio/courtyard for privacy. Surrounded by pretty, native desert vegetation, the custom features of this home are far too numerous to mention. Here are a list of just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings

~ Open floor plan

~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels

~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen

~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring

~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top

~ Kraftmaid hickory cabinets in kitchen

~ Pendant lighting

~ Tiled backsplash

~ Textured walls

~ Kiva fireplace in living room

~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom

~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry

~ Spacious closet

~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace

~ Shaded front porch

~ Flat-screen satellite TV

~ Wifi enabled

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.

Whether you're here for a wedding or event, are on an artist's retreat, are off to explore the surrounding area, or are simply here to enjoy the peaceful, gorgeous surroundings, La Casa Vieja is your home away from home in Marathon.

About Spencer Aaronson

I'm a long-time resident of Southern California who travels often to this part of Texas for leisure purposes myself. In my own travels over the years, I have been the beneficiary of incredible hospitality in the many unique properties where I've had the good fortune of resting my head, so I'm only too happy to return the favor and provide people with their own memorable vacation experiences.

Spencer Aaronson purchased this house in 2015

Why Spencer Aaronson chose Big Bend

After taking a road trip through the Big Bend area several years ago on my way to Memphis, I was hooked on this area. Something about this particular part of the country really resonated with me. I'm not sure if it is the peace and quiet, the wide open spaces, the romance of a lost time, or, perhaps most likely, all of the above. I've been making routine trips to the region since then and finally took the plunge and bought this property. I have a major soft spot for carefully-restored historical properties, and this one definitely fit the bill. A lot of care went into this renovation. I fell in love with it the moment it popped up on a real estate website I refer to. When I made a trip out there and saw it in person, I loved it even more. I have no doubt you'll feel the same.

What makes this house unique

This is a serious step back in time to the Pancho Villa era. But with all the modern amenities and luxuries one has come to expect in these unique properties. Here are just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings

~ Open floor plan

~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels

~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen

~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring

~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top

~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom

~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry

~ Spacious closet

~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace

~ Shaded front porch

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

Walking into the courtyard at La Casa Vieja is like being wrapped in a warm, friendly West Texas hug! We thoroughly enjoyed spending the evenings outside in this space. The house has outstanding craftsmanship with special attention to detail in all the wood and tile work. We felt so at home here, and you will too!! Highly recommend this marvelous house for your stay in the Big Bend region.

It was an amazing weekend. I had not idea Marathon Tx was that wonderful. Accommodations were great!

  • 5 of 5

Only regret is it was to short. The house was perfect for 6 people and better than a hotel room. Patio was so relaxing and I cannot wait to go back now that I know there is so much to do in Marathon and surrounding areas. A great place to get away and really relax. Love love this place!!!

Walking Distance to Galleries and Gage!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful place for both families and couples alike. We stopped on our way into and out of Big Bend. We got refreshed, relaxed, did laundry, and watched TV.

All looked forward to returning on our way out.

Got up early and sat in private patio and did some star gazing.

So close to Gage we ate dinner and played on their chess board.

Nice!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at Casa Vieja. Property has been updated and is nicely furnished. Good overall condition and and well kept. The courtyard is a good touch and provides a nice place to enjoy the evenings. I would suggest that the owner add a gas grill for outdoor cooking, that was about the only thing missing.

The location is very good for visiting Big Bend. It is about seventy miles to the park headquarters and takes about an hour and twenty minutes driving time.

If you like to do your own cooking, you definitely need to buy groceries before you get to Marathon. There is a small market in town that only has basics. Store in Alpine is pretty good.

Had dinner at Gage hotel one night ... very good.

We would definitely book Casa Vieja again.

Owner's Response: Glad you guys enjoyed, John. The strong winds in West Texas, unfortunately, make the prospect of an outdoor grill something of a challenge. We are discouraged from doing so due to county fire concerns. But we'll look into it. In any case, you're welcome back anytime!

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful couple of nights in La Casa Vieja, loved the layout of the house & courtyard, the beds were comfy & the house well equipped for our needs. A great base for our travels through Big Bend. We are at the Gage one night - great food & cocktails. The cafe next door did a lovely healthy breakfast. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone!!

Nice Launching Point for Visiting Big Bend National Park

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Las Casa Vieja for a few night as we visited Big Bend National Park. The house was very clean in a quiet neighborhood. The furnishings were nice; the bed in the main bedroom was comfortable as was the breakfast bar and living room. The kitchen was well stocked; we had all our breakfasts here as well as one dinner. I would recommend getting groceries before arriving (or driving to Alpine) since the store in Marathon has a weird mix of items. We tried to have a fire outside but without kindling we could not get it going. The configuration was a little weird in that you enter the house through either the bedroom or bathroom. It would be nice to have a curtain on the bathroom door; otherwise, when you step out of the shower anyone in the courtyard can see you. Our son called us before coming over to the main house to make sure no one was in the bathroom. The light in the shower did not work; it made taking showers a little dark. I would recommend bringing soap (they only supplied one small bar). My son enjoyed staying in the Casita. He would have spent more time in the Casita if he had somewhere to sit; he only had the bed to sit on. For older children, the Casita provides nice seperation in a secure courtyard. Overall, it was a nice stay and we would stay here again if we ever return to the Marathon area.

Owner's Response: Hi Steve. Thanks for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. We take pains to ensure our guests have an enjoyable time in the Big Bend. If you ever do stay with us in the future, I would encourage you to reach out to us during your stay about any issues. We are happy to address them at the time. As for the kindling, I'm sorry to hear that you, apparently, were unable to find it. We always provide firewood for our guests. Anyway, we hope to see you on your next visit!
