About John Hadden
I am a writer, theater director and carpenter. I've directed plays and taught theater all over the place and was a founding member of Shakespeare & Co in the Massachusetts Berkshires, not far south of here. I recently became a grandfather and my book has just been published (Conversations with a Masked Man, Arcade Publishing, 2016). My son is a cartoonist. I've been fortunate to work with people of all stripes and every age, on all kinds of different projects, and I like to see what happens when people respect one another.
John Hadden purchased this House in 1984
Why John Hadden chose Landgrove
I designed and built the house with the help of my younger brother, a wooden boat builder, and a neighboring contractor, after my son was born in 1983. I'd fallen in love with the area in the early 70s and always came back here to recharge and enjoy the woodland way of life and the wonders of the land.
What makes this House unique
This is the first place that felt like a solid home to me. I grew up overseas, moving from place to place, and when I first came to Vermont, the mountain ridges and their blankets of snow or green trees felt more alive than any place I'd been since I was a small boy in the mountains of Austria.

My friend and I were visiting Landgrove for a friend’s daughters wedding. John’s house was a perfect location for all our wedding related activities.
Our only hiccup was the bed in the second bedroom wasn’t prepared for guests so my friend and I ended up having to share one room. It was late at night when we discovered the issue.
The house is comfortable and adequately furnished. We really liked the uniqueness of the home. It’s a beautiful location.
Had a great time at the house. Very picturesque, peaceful location. Convenient to Hapgood Pond, Weston, Peru, etc. Owner, John, responded quickly to questions I had. We had a great weekend!
Great house and great location
Really enjoyed the house. Amazing light and a place with a good vibe. Would love to come back in the summer.
Charming, comfortable, well located
The Octagon House is well appointed, comfortable, cozy, and beautifully decorated. A wonderful place to spend a snowy weekend, with great access to the slopes.
Exactly what we were looking for
This house was perfect for our weekend getaway. Perfect location for skiing at multiple mountains.
My pups loved running around and going for long walks. The house is full of unique details, we loved it.
It was exactly as advertised and John was available for every question we had. We will definitely be back!
So glad you all had a good time, Meg, and come back any time!.
Beautiful spot, charming house
Loved this house for our family of 4 plus four legged friend. Clean, bright and interesting with art and books galore. Warm stove that was easy to operate. Hiking trail out back was fun. Owner was so nice and helpful. House was close for us to get to yummy restaurants and great skiing (magic, okemo, Bromley). Highly recommend the octagon!
Timothy, it was great to meet you all, and I'm glad you had a good vacation. Come back any time!
This is a well-known bicycling, skiing, hiking fly-fishing, and cultural destination. Stratton, Bromley, Magic and Okemo ski and summer resorts are all within easy reach, as are beautiful lakes and rivers, the Weston Playhouse, Dorset Theater Festival, Manchester Music Festival, Equinox Hotel, Hildene, the Lincoln home, the Southern VT Arts Center. The Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail both have trailheads within minutes of the house, which sits right in the middle of the Green Mountain National Forest.
