Wonderful getaway, small but efficient
Just spent 4 nights at Ocean Zen with my wife and 2 dogs. The cabin was peaceful & perfect for the 4 of us, with just enough and not too much room. It was well stocked with firewood as well as kitchen supplies to cook at home... good, as there is no close alternative for dinner. Make sure to check out the Ranch Café for great coffee/breakfast & lunch. It's just a 10 minute walk up the hill from the cabin, with plenty of views of deer, jack rabbits and wild turkeys. There's also a wine store there with wonderful wines affordably priced, and tastings on the weekends. Trails and beaches are about 1.5 miles. mostly by trails. It's an energetic walk, but well worth it, as Sea Ranch is incredibly gorgeous! The only drawback to pass along is the rental office is in Gualala, 10-15 minutes from the place. After a long, slow, winding drive on Highway 1, you'll need to go further just to get your check-in packet w/ keys... and drive back to the office again to drop them off when you leave. Seems like the guest-friendly thing to do would be to create a process that didn't entail these extra drives by providing something as simple as a lockbox at the cabin, common with most other VBRO rentals.
Clean, bright, and airy.
I spent a long weekend here alone, with the intention of rejuvenating by unplugging, reading, and walking on the beach. Not much else. For that, the home was perfect.
I felt I had plenty of privacy and solitude, but was simultaneously close to anything I wanted to do, including restocking supplies in Gualalla.
One small thing that would have made it even better was a simple way to plug my iPhone into a sound system of some sort. I saw there were speakers around the house but I wasn't able to connect to them.
Checked in Friday night, left Saturday morning...
While the interior of the home was superior, the one thing drastically lacking was comfort... No fans and no air conditioning... Plus, notices stating to keep the windows closed due to raccoons entering, even with people inside... Also, unable to open upstairs windows as the stairs were blocked off... Additionally, one of the windows in the bedroom was broken... Arrived around 9 pm Friday night and the inside temperature was 85 degrees... This was over Labor Day weekend, 2017, and the entire Bay area was being baked by 3 digit temperatures... Now I realize, that area doesn't usually require a/c, but not to have any ceiling fans? Couldn't sleep and decided we didn't want to deal with the heat for 3 nights, so packed up and left the following morning... When checking out, staff said they had fans we could borrow... Question - you knew the Bay area was under heat watch, why didn't you have the fans already there? Hoping for some sort of refund, but in this day and age, probably won't get one... Will I use the company that handled this property? Depends on the refund situation...
