About the property

Ideal for family holidays, near beaches, towns, supermarkets, sports facilities

A farmhouse which was bought by our family in the early 1960's, reconstructed and fully refurbished as a holiday home for our use, retaining many of the original characteristics: the local granite stone surrounding the large fireplace, a carved oak ceiling in the 1st floor living room, 'alcove' beds in that room, and original oak beams in the large living/dining room. The house is in a rural countryside area which overlooks the river Cavado, and Ofir beach and Espozende with its many attractions are within a 5 minute drive. A mature and secluded garden and lawns surround the house, with swimming pool and adjacent 'eira' (a cemented area originally used for beating corn - this was the miller's house!) is ideal for outdoor meals. Barbecue, canoes, bicycles are available. The house is for self-catering rental, is fully equipped, and maid service(cleaning) is offered daily with weekly change of linen. Changeover: Saturdays, arrival from 6pm departure 10am.

Arrival and departure times: We ask our guests to arrive at the property no earlier than 6pm on changeover days, and to leave up to 10am on the day of departure. This is to allow sufficient time for a thorough cleaning and change of linen. Your cooperation will be much appreciated.

Sports facilities: The swimming pool, canoes and bicycles as detailed below are available for guests enjoyment, but please note that the use of any of these facilities is expressly at your own risk and liability for damage or injury to our property, yourselves and third parties.

Swimming pool: for your own comfort and safety in the pool area, please note that a/ there is no trained lifesaver on hand; b/running and diving are not permitted; c/no food or drink is to be taken in this area. Please use the cemented area above the pool ('eira') for this purpose if required.

Canoes: these must be handled by adults only and care taken in their removal from and return to storage. Canoes may capsize easily in inexperienced hands, and the use of life jackets (provided) is obligatory.

Information/Instruction folder: Detailed information and instruction for use of equipment available in the house is contained in a plastic folder, usually left on the kitchen worktop.

Please note that the copper pans on the kitchen wall are decorative and not for use by guests.

The alcove beds in the 1st floor living room are not available for rental. The room is large and accommodates a child's cot if necessary. The garage is an open shelter for two cars, within the property. The 'staff' is Conceição, who provides daily cleaning service only (2 hours/day) and on Saturdays also a change of linen. She is also responsible for garden and pool maintenance. Telephone is metered and payable to Conceição at the end of stay. Elderly or infirm: would be comfortable on the ground floor as there are stairs only to 1st floor. Long term renters: on application only, as we often use the house ourselves.

A spacious farmhouse perfect for relaxing and entertaining

A lovely well equipped farmhouse with interesting garden and a lovely pool. We immediately felt at home and were made to feel very welcome by the generous gift of wine, fruit and essentials. There was plenty of shade in the heat of the day and three patio areas to choose from depending on where the sun was. There were a couple of small shops within walking distance and a large supermarket a short (5 minute) drive away that sold everything you could want. The farmhouse is in easy reach of the main roads for sightseeing further afield. We all had a lovely time and would recommend this place. Thank you

Family home, good for relaxing holiday.

The owner was very helpful answering preliminary queries; the description of the property was detailed and accurate, arrival instructions worked a treat; the kitchen is generously equipped and we appreciated the basic welcome supplies. It certainly has the feel of a well loved family home.

We were not very ambitious exploring the area, but did enjoy walks alongside the river, the Chapel and 'beach' at Barca do Lago, lunch at the Golf Club, Ofir, Esposende and San Laurenco, Barcelos on market day. The nearest bar was our reliable supply of bread rolls! We spent quite a lot of time by the pool, which unfortunately does not have a shallow end suitable for very young children. Would be more than happy to recommend this property, with the proviso about the swimming pool.

Delightful, well equipped home from home

Perfect home from home in rural setting but close to all amenities and within easy access to Porto, unesco world heritage sites and the seaside. House and wonderfully established gardens, well positioned terraces and pool provided very spacious indoor and outdoor space for 7 adults. All the facilities you would want and then some, from towels by the pool, to BBQ equipment, clean and cushioned pool chairs, and sun loungers and plenty of shade if required for outdoor eating. The house inside was delightful, spotlessly clean and there was endless hot water. On top of that, the view from the wisteria covered balcony was lovely. The caretaker made sure everything inside and out remained in perfect condition and nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed the short walk to both nearby bars and the little supermarket provided anything needed at short notice, ordering bread for us, saving a trip to the nearby superstore, only 5 minutes away in the car anyway!

Local bread van and fish lady passed the house daily and there was a good selection.

All in all, a great home to stay in, suited all of us perfectly, ages from 23 to 63. Highly recommended

Our holiday in North Portugal

This was our first visit to this area of Portugal, and it combined very neatly with a couple of days in Oporto at the end. The description on the website of the surrounding area is very accurate – if you have a car, you have access to the motorway and lots of very scenic towns and villages, as well as the local beaches.

The property itself was much bigger than we expected – it easily accommodated two couples and a teenager and we all had ample space to do our own thing if we wanted. It was kept immaculately clean and was very well stocked with kitchen implements etc, which we appreciated. The gardens were a highlight, and we had fresh peaches from the garden picked for our arrival – which was a lovely touch! The caretaker/cleaner for the property made us really welcome, and told us about the local festivities which were due to take place during our stay including religious processions, shows and fireworks – a real bonus!

We could have spent most of our holiday by the pool just doing nothing! The area is very rural and peaceful, and I went running on the little farm tracks that criss-cross the countryside around – getting a smile and hello from the tractor drivers!

There was a lot of sporting activity on the river nearby, which we didn’t partake in, but I imagine this would suit families with active teenagers.

I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone wanting a quiet base in which to relax and from which to explore the surrounding area. It is especially good for a large group of friends or a large family.

Magical Wonderful Holiday

The villa is lovely. Even better than the understated pictures lead you to believe. Very well equipt, clean and comfortable with personal touches. We particularly were taken with the beautiful garden and all its hidden secrets, perfectly maintained but not overly manicured. The pool is a bit small for 'real' swimmers but suited us and our children's splashing around perfectly.

Location is great and we felt the villa's views from the balcony and windows a treat. Close to small shops and cafes / bars and just a few minutes walk to the river and a short drive to the beach or the estuary at Esposende (we loved the fish restaurant on the promenade and the bicycle go carts you could rent to toodle up and down the prom). A short drive to the huge market in Braga and Bom Jesus (totally worth the walk up the steps - we had mini splashing fights in the fountains to beat the heat).

Eating out was surprisingly inexpensive and we munched our way through Esposende and Fao as well as the local bars / cafe. The nearest big supermarket is on the roundabout to Esposende so again very convenient for families.

I have recommended the villa to friends already.

The house has excellent motorway access: 25 mins Porto Airport, 1 Hr Vigo/Santiago airports. On Cavado River, with rowing facilities. Riding stables 5 mins away. Nearby Ofir beach is linked to other beaches on the coastline, such as Apulia where men in togas still collect seaweed for sale. Espozende is the nearest main town - 5 kms - offers many tourist attractions, supermarkets, etc. Port wine lodges in and near Porto, open to visitors. Local Golf at Quinta da Barca, 5 mins walk from house. International golf at Estela, a 15 minute drive. Windsurfing at Vila do Conde and Viana de Castelo - 20 mins drive. Valença do Minho on the border with Spain - an easy drive and a charming 'estalagem ' for lunch. Weekly fair on Thursdays at Barcelos - 20 min.-is well worth a visit - everything imaginable is for sale. Good food at nearby restaurants - A Lareira in Fão is highly recommended, spare ribs a speciality! - Martins, also in Fão - delicious seafood and reasonable prices.
