Located in the most coveted residential section of Old San Juan on a charming step street close to El Morro, this one floor home is a one bedroom, one bath luxury retreat. The living room is 20 by 25 and boasts a mixture of antique and modern furnishings and art and a 50" TV behind cabinet doors. The beamed ceilings are 14.5 feet high. A fully-equipped modern kitchen boasts a Sub Zero refrigerator, gas stove top, and full wall oven, dishwasher and 2 drawer Sub Zero beverage compartment.
The air-conditioned bedroom overlooks an interior patio with pond and lush tropical plants. There is a full bathroom off the bedroom with rain shower.
There is access to a rooftop garden with gazebo via a staircase/ladder.
When I moved from Philadelphia to Puerto Rico in 2002, I lived first on the small island of Vieques where I was involved in a family business. Now I enjoy time travellingg when not in San Juan.
Wynne Carson purchased this house in 2010
I had my eye on this property for years before I bought it. It was for sale but needed to be renovated. Again. It had charm, history and a lot of personality. It had been a local hangout in the 1960's, and I have met more than one person who played pool in what is now my living room. From exterior photographs from the early 1990's when it was a ruin, I was able to see it once had a pitched roof, suggesting it must be among the earliest buildings. In my old age I may try to research its origins.
The house blends old and new. From the beamed ceilings to the oriental rug and treasures I have collected from the different places I have lived, the atmosphere is sophisticated, yet cozy. Art work from the 19th century hangs next to contemporary, mostly Caribbean work by artists living in Puerto Rico and Vieques.
There is a modern kitchen with all the conveniences that you would NOT expect in a Colonial home. Off the kitchen is a peaceful patio with pond and fountain.
My wife and I spent nine nights in this gorgeous home in April. The house is visually stunning with soaring ceilings, artful decor and old-world charm. If you appreciate comfort, privacy and modern conveniences then this is a great choice. The beautiful inner courtyard has a fountain and is accessed from either the bedroom or the kitchen. There is also a shaded hammock on the roof-top deck.
The house is located within easy walking distance of all the historical sites, restaurants, bars, art galleries and shopping. You couldn't find a better location in all of Old San Juan. Calle Sol is a wonderful cobblestone street. Savor the sights and sounds as you wander the sidewalks and alleyways.
Wynne, the owner, was most generous with her knowledge of the area and it's people. She introduced us to some hidden treasures of Old San Juan and her efforts were greatly appreciated. We will definitely be back and we highly recommend this home to anyone considering a visit to Old San Juan. Thanks again Wynne !
We rented this gorgeous home to host a photography workshop with National Geographic photographer David Alan Harvey. Wynne, the owner, was generous with her knowledge and support and her gorgeous, well-appointed home was perfect as our classroom. The seating was comfortable and though the main room doesn't have AC, with the fans on and the high ceilings we were totally comfortable even with our large group. Her home is charming and old world feeling, but with all the modern conveniences. Just perfect.
The location was ideal for any visitor, as it is just off a charming cobblestone stairway (filled with the city's famous alley cats) that leads you to San Sebastian street with its bars and restaurants. A short walk the other direction brought you to anything you needed - groceries, shopping, pharmacy, more restaurants.
Parking was relatively easy with a little patience, especially given that we were there during Spring Break. We used the parking deck off Norgazaray on the weekends (a few blocks away) but during the week we found street parking.
We honestly felt so at home, we are all considering moving to Old San Juan - a lovely city filled with lovely people. Art, music, food, beauty...who could ask for more?
And when we come back - we will be thrilled to book her space again. Wynne was a joy to work with. We enjoyed easy communication and she was flexible with our changing needs as our program evolved. Thank you for having us!
My boyfriend and I just returned from a one week stay in Old San Juan where we lodged at Ms. Carson's home. The house is absolutely beautiful. She has kept the wooden shutters and the doors just the same. She has a lovely mixture of antiques and modern furniture which brings the whole house together. The house has an inner courtyard with a running fountain. If I close my eyes I can just imagine being one of the señoritas living during colonial times.
That being said, the house is on a very quiet and picturesque part of Calle Sol ( right behind El Convento.) She has modern amenities like a washer/dryer, TV and wifi. AC is available in the bedroom though with her multiple ceiling fans, you don't miss it in the other rooms.
Ms. Carson has a fully stocked pantry and kitchen (pots, pans, dishes, etc.) where we've cooked several meals during our stay.
Ms. Carson (upon my request) found an exercise program nearby which I attended while in OSJ. She also introduced me to one of her neighbors who gave me more information about these fitness classes.
We loved the house and hope we can return one day.
During the evening you may need some mosquito repellant due to the house not having glass windows. A combination of Cutter's repellant and the fans running on semi high did the trick for us.
Ms. Carson, if I may respectfully advise more lighting in the kitchen area please? During the evenings it was a little difficult looking into the pots as we were cooking.
Thank you again for allowing us to stay in your lovely home. I'll keep you in my files for future reference.
What a wonderful home!! We enjoyed the historic splendor of this Old San Juan home located in the heart of the original Spanish city of San Juan. While historic in all details this home has been completely and luxuriously renovated with all of the comforts imaginable. While only steps from the historic church, the boutique Hotel El Convento, and shopping, the home offers complete privacy when desired. This will definitely be our home whenever we are fortunate enough to visit San Juan. The owner, Wynn Carson, was a delightful host with a taste for the exquisite.
My house is located on a cobblestone street minutes from the attractions of Old San Juan: forts, museums, markets, shopping, restaurants, theater, etc.
