About Judith Ronning

My grandparents were settlers here, in the winter I often wonder why they stopped here. But in the summer, you forget about the long winters and enjoy the beautiful lake, the cool evenings and all the birds and wildlife. The cry of the loons in the evenings is unforgettable. Eagles soaring overhead, a beautiful sight. The beavers swimming by, looking for more tender trees. One morning I awoke and they had taken my apple tree, a crab apple tree and a sugar maple! Now I plant my fruit trees far from the lake shore. I love gardening! Every time a birch tree died, a new garden was birthed in the rich soil. We love people and we love sharing this special spot with our guests who quickly become our friends.

Why Judith Ronning chose Minnesota

My husband's father bought this land back in the 50's. So we sit nestled in on land between his brother's and his sister's. It is a quiet haven, tucked in behind an island in a little bay. Years ago before everyone had GPS's, boats would come flying through here, thinking they were heading for TimBucTu and the Narrows but these days it is quiet. On opening fishing though there are always 4-5 boats in our little bay. Most of the summer we have fishing boats out front. One only needs to row out a ways in our 16-foot rowboat, available to our guests, and go fishing with the best of them!

What makes this cabin unique

"So peaceful," that is the comment we often hear as people step through the breezeway and see the setting, the gardens and Lake Vermilion. The breezeway is a comfortable sheltered spot to observe the lake, make and enjoy dinners on the grill. And everyone goes for the swing chair. "Room with a View," that was the name of a movie and I feel like that is what best describes our guest quarters, an awesome view from every window.

Super cute little cabin in the northwoods on lake vermillion

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cabin!! The decor is very cozy and perfect for a northwoods cabin, the bed is really comfortable, and the kitchen has everything you need! A wood burning stove and sauna complete the cozy atmosphere. The location on lake vermillion is stunning! Our dog Dakota had a blast playing in the deep snow, and we went snowshoeing on the lake and snowboarding at nearby Giants Ridge. The owners were super friendly and accommodating to anything we needed! We will be back, hopefully in summer!

Musky Fishing Perfection

  • 5 of 5

Perfect rental for 2-4 people on a musky fishing vacation that plan to spend 14+ hours on the water and want to come "home" to a warm, cozy, yet simple house. The benefits for our group were; 1) price: split 4 ways, 2) location: close to Timbukto landing which allows one to go West or East. 3) simple and clean: stocked kitchen, grill, towels, blankets, etc. The one concern, boat parking: Yet, easily fixed once realized the lot layout...I'd say max of two 19-21' boats. Very friendly, kind, and accommodating hosts. One recommendation: available wireless wifi :)

Lovely property, lovely hosts

  • 5 of 5

My family and I wanted to take a last-minute trip to Lake Vermilion over Labor Day. I was delighted to have found the Ronning's place available for the holiday weekend - nearly all the resorts and campgrounds were booked. We arrived late Thursday night to find a lovely guesthouse lit up and waiting for us. The property was charmingly decorated, comfortable and neat as a pin.

The property slept three of us comfortably (one bedroom with a beautiful view of the lake, a fold-out couch in the living room). Since we were a group of 5, the Ronnings graciously agreed to let my son and his friend stay in a tent on a gorgeous point overlooking the lake, and did not require any additional payment for the accommodation. They had a million-dollar view from their campsite! They loved it. We were also able to bring our two Golden Retrievers with us, which we also really appreciated. Plus the boat launch was only a couple miles away, and the dock was easy to access and well maintained.

I would definitely recommend the Ronnings' property to anyone looking for a getaway on Lake Vermilion. They have a beautiful view, are centrally located on the lake so that fishing either east or west ends are equally accessible, plus their position on a small cove keeps things nice and quiet.

The only caveat I would add is that we couldn't access the Wi-Fi from the guesthouse itself. Sitting on the breezeway to check our email was hardly a hardship, though. All in all, I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to get away to Lake Vermilion. It was a lovely vacation, and one which I would love to repeat!
