~Another lovely vacation rental managed by RealJoy Vacations~
This unit had horrible beds, was not very clean at our arrival. There was an on and off sewage smell on bedroom side of unit that was absolutely awful and our biggest issue. We thought a leaking toilet was the issue but smell was not resolved by the fixing of that toilet. Several calls (spent half our trip calling and waiting for return calls from realjoy/arrival of maintenance and plumbing) were made to realjoy regarding all the issues. We even asked to be switched units but the realjoy agent failed to return our call the next morning for resolution. So we roughed it out for the 6 nights but will never do that again! The location of this unit was amazing...just needs better beds and sewage issue resolved. Overall, beach didn't disappoint....but unit sure did! We will be staying elsewhere next year.
My family has been staying at Crystal Villas for over 20 years because we love the location and the low density of the complex. We have stayed on almost every unit on the ground floor, two units on the second floor, and one on the third floor.
The Good: The first floor units are fantastic in terms of ease of access to the beach. You don't have to lug beach stuff up and down stairs or mess with the combination lock on the gate while juggling coolers/beach chairs/children - just stash it on the patio and grab it on your way out to the beach. This part of the beach is amazing and always seems less crowded, probably because it's close to Henderson Beach State Park. The kitchen was well-stocked with cooking supplies and dishes.
The Bad: We have learned over the years that we shouldn't expect any of the mattresses to be at the pinnacle of comfort, and that the first and second floor units are noisy because of people walking around in the upper units. The noise from above was the usual, and sounded like elephants tap dancing (so nothing new.) The bathroom off of the bedroom periodically emitted a bad smell, and I wondered if the wax ring of the toilet was leaking.
The ugly: The mattresses in this unit are beyond awful. The sofa bed is so uncomfortable that it is unusable. The mattresses on the bunks provide an experience akin to sleeping on a plastic mat spread on plywood. The king bed mattress is a springy, back-pain inducing disaster, and it is the best mattress in the unit. We rotated it after the first night, and it helped somewhat, but not enough. I honestly don't know where one would acquire such a terrible mattress. There were three of us in the unit. Two of us slept in the king bed and we ended up just leaving the sofa bed closed and making up the sofa itself as a bed for the third person. We had planned to use the bunks for two people, but didn't because they were so uncomfortable. The sheets were also very scratchy. Is it that difficult to buy decent sheets?
In summary, I will not be renting this unit again. I think the only person who got a decent night's sleep was the person on the sofa itself. Given the price of the unit, I expect to be able to sleep at least four people comfortably, given that most sofa beds are uncomfortable. I would strongly recommend that the owners of this unit update the sleeping arrangements if they want to get any return visitors.
Pros and cons with this condo. While the condo was clean, it needed updates, badly. I also don't understand why choose carpet? Especially for a ground floor condo. Sleeper sofa mattress was HORRIBLE, and so were the bunk mattresses. Super thin. Master bath side had a sewage smell on and off during our stay. Couldn't figure that one out. Lots of positives as well tho. Proximity cannot be beat! Literally steps away from the beach. Condo building was quiet, and a great location. We will definitely stay in this condo building again, but will probably choose a different unit.
Our family enjoyed our stay here. The view of the beach was beautiful and the facility was clean. However, I was disappointed in some things including the furniture and bathroom. The furniture was uncomfortable and my back hurt from sleeping in the bed. One of the bathrooms had a bad smell the whole time during our stay. Also if you have small children I would not recommend this specific facility because it was right by the pool and made it very difficult for our baby to take naps during the day due to other people being loud at the pool, slamming doors to their rooms, etc.
Easy access to the property from Mid-Bay Bridge, right near every store you need; and the half-a-minute walk to your (complimentary) beach chair is IDEAL. The condo could use some refreshing (but who's staring at the bathroom grout when the white sand and crystal waters are mere steps away?) and the walls are thin (if Mr. Man, snoring on the other side of the wall, will bother you, bring ear plug and sleep mask).
