"Entre Ciel et Mer" - Spacious Old Town Loft - Bright with Spectacular Views

Bedrooms 1
Space 721 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

One Bedroom Flat with Cathedral Ceiling, Exposed Beams and Mezzanine Bedroom

"Entre Ciel et Mer" is just that! - Between Sea and Sky. This beautiful apartment is on the top floor of a building built c. 1700 and features a mezzanine bedroom in what was once the attic. It is 5 minutes from the historic harbor front and restaurants and another 5 minutes to the beaches. From the front door it is literally 30 paces from butchers, bakers, candlestickmakers (well, maybe not) a greengrocer, delicatessen, pharmacy, café and restaurant. When you enter the apartment the first thing you will notice is the original wooden roof beams almost 16 feet above you, and then all the windows. Five of them, three facing south and overlooking the harbor and two facing east and looking to Monaco and down to the town square. A fully equipped, modern kitchen offers you all the cutlery and crockery to enjoy meals at home. Exploring the cupboards you will find all the kitchen knives, pots and pans and other accessories to prepare a sumptuous meal. The living room features a brand new HDTV and you will have internet access. On the mezzanine you will find a queen-size bed with bed tables and a dressing table. Feel free to unpack and store your luggage behind the dressing table. You will be looking over all the red-tiled rooftops, of a village that dates back to the 1100's, to the Bay of Beaulieu sur Mer and out to the lighthouse of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

Villefranche is a traditional Nissard fishing village flanked to the west by Nice and the East, Monte Carlo. The natural beauty of its setting has been the inspiration for calling it the Jewel of the Cote d'Azur. Throughout the village are small parks with fountains and shade trees of Olive and local Magnolia, where you can rest and appreciate the beauty of the pastel colored houses that line the many lanes. Or simply take a book and your lunch and enjoy a good read to the restful sounds of the fountains. Amongst these beautiful lanes you will find small boutiques, cafes, potted plants outside the front doors, flowering hanging baskets and some magnificent, ancient studded doors that attest to an earlier time when life wasn't quite so peaceful.

Walking from the harbor west you can stroll around the base of the walls of the Citadel to La Darse were ancient boatyards are still in use to this day. Here you will see the traditional fishing boats, painted in bright colors, moored awaiting there next early morning excursion to bring back the fresh fish and seafood that makes Villefranche so justifiably famous.

You can make your stay as quiet and relaxing as you wish, but there are no shortage of things to do! From the Wednesday and Saturday markets in Villefranche, where you can purchase cheeses, meats, fresh produce and local delicacies, to the beaches and all the seafront activities, you will not be bored. A visit to the Citadel to experience spectacular views and enjoy the ancient architecture is a must. And while you are there you have to visit the Volti Museum of sculptures, carved by one of Villefranche's most famous residents - Antoniucci Volti. However, after a couple of days of exploring you may just succumb to the pace of the village and enjoy an 'apero' across the street at Tabac de la Paix where the locals spread and digest all the gossip of an ancient town.

About Iain Tyndal

Nancy and I have loved the South of France for some time and last November we stayed for a month in an apartment on rue Volti here in Villefranche. We were so enchanted with the village we made enquiries into purchasing a residence and spending much more time here. We found the apartment, named it "Entre Ciel et Mer" and purchased it in Jun 2015. We have pretty much completed furnishing it but if you feel something is missing, let us know and we'll see what we can do about providing it for your next stay. Nancy is a Montrealer and I am Scottish and we currently live in Atlanta. This is our home away from home. We hope you will also feel the same way. Please make yourself at home and enjoy our residence as though it were your own.

Iain Tyndal purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Iain Tyndal chose Villefranche-sur-Mer

When we first saw the apartment we couldn't believe our eyes. The spaciousness! The high ceilings and that view! How could we ask for more. And the location!

What makes this apartment unique

Location! Location! Location! You are literally 30 paces from all you need in the way of shops, bars and restaurants. As soon as you put your suitcases down your vacation begins.

Now, we do want you to know about a couple of things. That view comes with a small price. We are on the third floor of the building, and there is no elevator or lift, but before you know it you'll have your "Villefranche Legs".

The second thing is you are staying on Church Street and there is a church. And in this church there are bells that chime from 7 o'clock in the morning till 9 in the evening. They are very charming and add to the whole atmosphere of the village. But! You may get a rude awakening for the first couple of mornings until you adjust to them. And you will!

And watch your 'coco' as you exit the mezzanine. If you are 6-4 (1.9m) like me, you need to duck. Don't worry though. Once you are under that roof beam there is plenty headroom.

Fabulous little town and fabulous apartment!

  • 5 of 5

This gem should not really be shared with others because it will be booked out all the time and we won't be able to return!!! This lovely apartment is perfectly located at the top edge of the old town right next to the local boucherie and boulangerie. This means that the swarms of people that come off the huge boats that come in every second day don't invade your little slice of heaven too much. Fling open your shutters, make a G&t and watch the boat activity and sunset whilst you decide whether to go out or stay in and make dinner. Make sure you have bought all the ingredients though as racing down to the shops on a hot August night for last minute stuff I found challenging with all the steep steps involved to the top floor! Plenty of great restaurants around and the the beach has semi sand, which is a plus on Mediterranean shores. If you are stuck for a taxit/uber to the airport, ask about Kevin. He has a valet service and you may just get the rockstar treatment in a convertible!!

A small jewel in town

  • 5 of 5

We are a couple with a 4 year old girl, we usually rent holiday apartments which are much more comfortable when you have a baby.

The house in Villefranche, unlike many others, is very comfortable and well furnished and gives you the feeling of living your own vacation house.

The apartment enjoys a beautiful view of Villefranche bay thanks to the five windows which also makes it very airy.

The location in the earth of town with “boulangerie” just a few steps from the house will allows you to enjoy the village life and you can benefit of a healthy breakfast with the classic "baguette" and "pan e chocolat"

Our judgment is certainly very positive and we hope to have the chance in the future to spend once again our vacation there.

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We are so happy with our choice to stay here. The apartment is a super charming older building, but with plenty of modern updates. The panoramic views of the water, church and Cap Ferret are spectacular too. The location is hard to beat too with quick easy access to trains and buses as well as a generous number of great restaurants and shops just steps away. There are a lot of stairs in the neighborhood and the apartment building, but that just helps justify all the great food nearby you will want to eat. Definitely a great option close to everything but much less crowded feeling.

Amazing apartment with amazing view of the Mediterranean!

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful week long stay at this beautiful apartment. Both the owner and in-country property manager were accommodating and easy to work with for payment and check-in/check-out. The space was just as described with an incredible view over Villefranche, the bay and Cap Ferrat from the 5 large bay windows. While there were a few times, late in the day, when the hike up to the 3rd floor seemed daunting, it is well worth the extra steps to have the amazing view and enjoy the relaxing breezes of the Mediterranean. With its modern feel, clean and open floor plan, with excellent kitchen, it really had everything we could have asked for. The close proximity to the bakery, butcher shop, many excellent restaurants, bus/train, and beach, made this an excellent base as we explored the French Riviera. We would definitely stay again and highly recommend this apartment!

beautiful stay at a truly nice, cosy place

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is just like shown on the photos. All clean, beautiful decorated and full of light.

It is a pleasure to get up in the morning and walk around it, preparing breakfast.. or in the evenings

relaxing on the large sofa.. while enjoying the sight.

No car needed which is top. Buses and train station in walking distance so are the grocery stores, restaurants and the beach.

Nice, Monaco and more easily reached either by bus or train.

Beaulieu is in walking distance along the shore, the beach and the water are amazingly clean.

Villefranche is a pittoresque place that offers a lot to discover. People are friendly too!

Additional pricing information

Cleaning Fee £88.82
Pet Fee £44.41
Refundable Damage Deposit £444.1

Payment Schedule and Fees
We require a 50% deposit of the total booking price and the balance is due 15 prior to arrival. A security deposit equivalent to 500€ is included in the total price and will returned to you automatically by VRBO within one week of your departure. A final cleaning fee of 100€ is also included (150€ if a pet is also staying with you in the apartment).

Arrival and Departure Times
Due to the fact that guests may be departing on the same day as other guests are arriving the departing guests must vacate the apartment by 10am. Arriving guests cannot have access to to the apartment before 4pm. This will allow sufficient time for the cleaning crew to prepare the apartment for the incoming guests. This rule is hard and fast unless agreed between the guest and ourselves. If we do not have another guest arriving the departure times may be more flexible.

We do not offer refunds on deposits or final payments as a general policy. We can provide you with a rental contract with which to obtain travel insurance for financial protection in the event of a need to cancel. (When you pay the deposit, please ask us for a contract for travel insurance). It is not our desire to have you pay for something you cannot use, nor for you to feel penalized for having to cancel as it is usually due to an emergency, but we are a small business and simply can’t afford to refund bookings like a hotel with a rapid turnover. Our customers tend to book many months if not a full year in advance. Because it is difficult to rebook an apartment if you cancel on a somewhat short notice (2 or 3 months prior to arrival), we will have turned away potential customers. For this reason, we are happy to provide a contract so you can get travel insurance. In general, we need at least 3 to 4 months to rebook an apartment, and sometimes more. Under very special circumstances, and if we are able to rebook the apartment, we will provide a partial refund.

Manager's Cancellation Policy

  • Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
