Why Brandy Wall chose Coastal Georgia

The benevolence of a prestigious gentlemen, Mr. Percival (Percy) Randolph Cohen, provided the financial opportunity to construct the beautiful building which carries his name. Mr. Cohen was born on November 8, 1851 and lived his life in Savannah, Georgia. He served as the CEO of Savannah Compress Company. Upon his passing on April 21, 1927, his entire fortune was dispersed amongst three worthy causes: notably the Fresh Air Home on Tybee Island, Bethesda Home for Boys and funding for the construction of Cohen's Retreat.

In his will, Mr. Percy bequeathed $50,000 to construct a facility "where men would not die old and lonely".

And so it began...

On December 23, 1933, the architectural plan for Levy & Clarke was approved for Cohen's Retreat. A few months later, on March 18, 1934, the cornerstone was laid at 5715 Skidaway Road. The contents inside of this cornerstone were two pennies with Mr. Cohen's birth and death year, corn and a bottle of wine. On Christmas Eve in 1934, the Cohen's Retreat Dedication Ceremony was held and attended by Rabbi Max, Mayor Gamble and Judge A.B. Lovell.

For over 50 years, the building served as a facility for aging men and was named "Cohen's Old Man's Retreat". While it is true, Mr. Cohen's financial generosity provided funding for the building, it was his gift of compassion and care for others which continue to touch our hearts today. There is no greater gift than the gift of giving back to others, as validated by Mr. Cohen's portrait hanging above our mantle, in the very spot it hung so many years ago.

Fast forward to a new millennium, where the names and faces have changed but the fundamental concept remains the same.

Colleen Smith agrees the opportunity to resurrect a Savannah landmark while creating an environment as colorful and quirky as the gentlemen who once resided here has truly been a remarkable journey.

When you bring creative souls together in an eclectic atmosphere, something magical is revealed.

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I came to visit Cohen's retreat for the fall pop up shop. I knew I was in for a treat by reading others reviews online.

The cottage was clean and tidy and had lovely artistic flair. It felt like Home and had everything I needed.

The owner was responsive and helpful getting situated.

Aside from the cottage, the convenience of the restaurant at Cohen's and the fun shops in the surrounding community was a wonderful plus to the location.

It also was not a bad drive to downtown Savannah.

I will definitely be back and recommend to friends and family!
