About Sharon Gonzalez

Hello and thank you for your interest!

We are a large, blended family, with a crazy passion for traveling! Between the two of us - a British expat former public school teacher, and a retired Captain of the YFD, we've logged a lot of traveling mileage! From the Island of Borneo, to the South of France and all the way up through the Highlands of Mexico..we've lost count at this point! We found our home after an exploratory trip along the Gulf Coast of Florida. Driving though Dunedin on our way to the airport (Atlanta airport, we were a bit off track...exploring:)), we followed main street as it veered off through town. Loving the look of the town - beautifully kept and creative shop/restaurant fronts, we detoured along a couple of residential streets. The lack of high-rises that hog so much of the scenery in other Floridan coastal towns was an instant appeal...Dunedin seemed to embody a vibe we'd been looking for our entire trip - that "Old Floridan" feel that has become so elusive. Recently, on a trip down with our teens, we spent our last evening bike cruising around town. At one end of main street, playing on a huge inflatable screen, Gene Kelly in 'Singing in the Rain' crooned to locals and popcorn vendors sitting on blankets beneath gigantic live oaks covered with moss. Five blocks down, outside Skips Bar, members of the high school bagpipe band wailed out a few tunes. Further down a Jazz singer was singing her heart out at Kelly's, and beyond that, a firework display was going off. The atmosphere was alive, exciting and bustling...and this was all on an ordinary friday in April. It was pure magic.

Why Sharon Gonzalez chose Dunedin

At the bottom of our property sits a gate opening onto the Pinellas Trail. It's a ten foot wide bike/pedestrian pathway to local bars, shops and the beaches. We ride our bike everywhere! Why? Because it's easy, fun and we need the exercise! The house sits on a quiet, residential street, lined with 50's style Floridan ranches - each a different color and each different. The road was formed with hand laid house bricks in a herringbone pattern over sixty years ago...and is as cute as a button. This is an unpretentious neighborhood populated with outdoorsy, dog-walking friendly people. It's like stepping back 50 years and we find that very appealing! The house itself has been completely remodeled, is very comfortable, quiet and is quite literally a private, tropical oasis! We've landscaped both rear and front areas around the property with banana, pineapple and fruit trees, crushed shell and solar lighting.

What makes this house unique

Everywhere is within biking distance! Whether you fancy art classes at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center (ask us about it!!), Honeymoon island for an early morning walk, or breakfast at Brenda's on the Causeway, or The Covered Bridge...it's all very, very close!

Impeccable vacation retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Mermaid House was all that it is cracked up to be. With a screened in pool and conveniently located on the Pinellas Path within a short distance to downtown Dunedin and Honeymoon Island, it makes the perfect spot for both a family vacation or a fun adults only get away. All three bedrooms were outfitted with comfortable beds, the kitchen and outdoor areas were well stocked with supplies and bathrooms were clearly remodeled recently. We will definitely come back.

Stellar vacation at the Mermaid House!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a fabulous stay at Sharon and Tom’s lovely home. If anything, the photos don’t quite do justice to the home. The pool is an amazing amenity - we used it daily and really enjoyed the privacy, attractive landscaping, and character of the entire lanai/backyard area. Sharon and Tom were very responsive to our questions, and they provided a binder with all sorts of helpful information. We had a great week and are thrilled that we could rent such a terrific house from such friendly owners!

Your own private resort

  • 5 of 5

We spent the week feeling like we were at a luxury resort but with the privacy of home. The pool is surrounded by such lush and gorgeous landscaping. The decor is unique, beautiful, unpretentious, warm and comfortable. Sharon and Tom's notes about places to go and things to do were invaluable. We truly appreciated access to the bikes and the home's convenient location for getting on the trail! My family was very happy and comfortable in our own private tropical paradise right in Dunedin, Florida!

The Mermaid is Lovable

  • 4 of 5

We spent January +, 2018 at the Mermaid House in Dunedin. The house was simple, clean, and held lovely Mexican decor. Thought has been put into what guests need and how to organize items for high utility. We loved living with so many amenities, particularly the bicycles, right on the Pinellas Trail. The well maintained yard, pool, and back lanai provided some of the loveliest experiences of any vacation we've had. Sharon and Tom were very reasonable, candid, kind, and straight-forward as owners. Of the three VRBOs we've tried in the area, this was the cleanest and most enjoyable.

Beautiful property, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We have never stayed at such a relaxing place on vacation! We loved the outdoor living area so much that we had to force ourselves to leave the property. There was an osprey that claimed a branch in a live oak tree above the pool that we watched devour a fish. He came every day to sit and call to other osprey.

Very nice, cozy property in a great location! We stayed home more than expected because the pool and spa tub were so relaxing! Many activities and great restaurants nearby when we wanted to get out. If you are bringing a dog, be sure to check out the nearby Hammock Park.
