Overview

About the property

Large 280m2 home. 3000m2 secluded walled garden, forest walks, sleeps 8

At La Buanderie, you'll find four-star luxury and a taste of the sought-after Chateau estate lifestyle at a reasonable cost.

This impressive late 19th-century country house boasts a contemporary interior, Shaker-style kitchen and lofty ceilings - the front door alone stands at 3m high! There are also two spacious lounges, four large bedrooms, a family bathroom and an en-suite, sleeping eight in total. Set well into the forest, you won't be disturbed by any road noise here. The estate’s drive is a kilometre in length! There's also plenty of parking available.

But the appeal of La Buanderie doesn't stop there - you simply need to step outside. Within the property’s private walled garden, which stretches to 3000m2 and was formerly the neighbouring chateau’s vegetable garden, you'll find beautiful planting with rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas and charming pathways. With a pond just the other side of one wall, keep your eyes peeled for the occasional heron flying by as you laze in the sun. The bright yellow and black salamanders that are are included in the Department’s crest, might also catch your eye, as they bask on the warm stone (although they are more usually hiding underneath them).

Beyond the gardens, a 40-acre, private oak forest awaits. There are many meandering tracks, leading you through the leafy canopy to lakes, meadows and more woodland. Wild boar, booted eagles, buzzards, wood pekkers, cuckoos, owls and deer can all be found here. There's also a resident turtle on one pond, and the elusive red squirrels have also made homes here.

Back at the property, you’ll find all the tools you need to make the most of the wildlife that is, quite literally, on your doorstep. A portable hide and binoculars will help you track down the animal and birdlife you seek, while a digital microscope and new slides, included in your welcome pack, will make even the forest’s smallest species accessible, from butterflies and insects to fungi. And for those with more botanical and arboreal interests, the Suunto height meter will allow you to get the measure of the forest’s towering oaks. There’s even an infrared trail camera, helping you to scout out the most secretive of wildlife during your stay.

As you explore the estate, you'll also discover the charming stables, dog kennels and chapel, all of which boast authentic and romantic French architecture. The estate is shared with five other owners, as well as horses, ponies and other pets. A plan of the estate is available at the house, indicating where the private zones are located, to help you explore the forest and its wildlife.

Kitchen

The Shaker-style kitchen is modern and well equipped, with a fridge-freezer, pull-out pantry, dishwasher, ovens (fan / multi / microwave), hob, washing machine and tumble dryer - ideal after a day walking in the forest.

Two living rooms

Both are furnished with comfortable sofa suites. In a chest, you will find plenty of toys for children as well as games including badminton, pétanque and croquet for guests to enjoy. In one living room you will find TV and DVD player with surround sound. In the other a farmhouse style table and benches for 10 and a hi-fi system. There are also a range of CD players and iPhone docks available to guests in bedrooms.

Bathrooms

There is a modern toilet and sink located downstairs for convenience. The master bedroom benefits from an en-suite, complete with a shower and bidet. There is also a family bathroom, which includes a bath with an overhead shower. A selection of luxurious Molton Brown products await you on arrival.

Bedrooms

There are four bedrooms at the property - the master double bedroom, one further double bedroom and two twin rooms.

Young children and babies

There are two cots and a high chair available at the house.

The house benefits from convenient gas central heating as well as two modern wood burning stoves and an open fireplace in one of the lounges.

Things to do nearby

About Mr Fraser

This is my former home. I now live in the UK but spend as much time as I can here.

Mr Fraser purchased this chateau / country house in 1993

Why Mr Fraser chose Orchaise

I bought this home to live in when I worked in the near by town of Blois. It is a very unusual and attractive location, which I am very attached to. It has been rated at the 4 star level under the new government standard for furnished holiday homes.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Tranquil setting on a private, historic chateau estate surrounded by an oak forest in a beautiful part of France with many chateaux to visit and other tourist attractions in this UNESCO listed region. Excellent base for observing a wide range of wildlife in the forest.

Lovely property in a nice location

  • 5 of 5

The property is large and well maintained with a good-sized pool. We didn't find the pool cover thst easy to unfold, but that might be just our technique! Our kids loved the woodland setting. We even saw wild deer in the woods on a few occasions. The property itself is in a good location for visiting the local towns of Blois, Amboise, Vendome etc. There's a supermarket down the road in Herbault with a reasonable selection of bread, meat, fish and vegetables, so you don't need to travel far to pick up the essentials.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review Martin. The security cover on the pool is a bit heavy. It needs to be wound back by 2 people, one on either side, using the 2 tools provided. I will provide further guidance to clients in the future.

Very nice property

  • 4 of 5

We all enjoyed our stay at the property. The property is large with plenty of space for everyone to have their own space. It also has a good-sized pool. We had a couple of issues whilst we were there but the owner dealt with them as quickly as possible. Unfortunately the barbecue ban at the property (due to forest fires) did make cooking a little difficult for 8 people. The children loved the woodland walks and they saw a couple of deer in the woods. The property is in a good location for visiting the local towns of Blois, Amboise. There is a supermarket nearby and boulangerie in Orchaise. Overall a very nice holiday

Owner's Response: I am glad that Mary's family enjoyed their holiday. The outdoor barbecue ban mentioned is a French regulation that applies within 200m of woodland to prevent forest fires and this house is in a lovely oak forest. The property is equipped with comprehensive cooking facilities, including De Dietrich fan oven, multi function microwave / oven and grill and gas hob including a woc burner. There is also an additional Neff microwave, rice cooker and pressure cooker. A prior client dropped and broke one of the cast iron hob pan supports just before leaving and we had to get a new one at short notice from De Dietrich which took a few days. Mary's party included vegetarians which increased their needs for different cooking methods and they were initially planning to use barbecues in parrallel to help cover this. The cooking facilities are normally fine for a group of 8.

A lovely family break

  • 5 of 5

The property is a very spacious house set in the grounds of a small chateau. There were six adults in our party and with four bedrooms we had plenty of space. The house is very well furnished and equipped so in many ways was a home from home. Being in the grounds it is set off the road so is blissfully quiet and yet the local supermarket and bakers are only 10 minutes drive away. The swimming pool is a perfect size for the property and well looked after. The local area offers lots of attractions varying from chateaux, to picturesque towns and castles. several of the party had just had birthdays and one while we were there and we went to a Michelin starred restaurant in Blois where we had an excellent meal which although not cheap provided good wines at much cheaper prices than in the equivalent restaurant in the UK. we also found a nearby vineyard (50 minutes) down the Loire where we tasted some good wine and very reasonable prices. It's website is lachapiniere.fr. The sauvignon blanc and dessert wines were excellent and very reasonably priced, as were the reds - gamay and malbec. The owner is a delightful lady who makes you very welcome.

All in all this was an excellent choice for our holiday and I am pleased to recommend it highly as somewhere to stay.

The house is absolutely stunning, spacious, clean and well maintained. We enjoyed a very relaxing week with plenty to do in the Loire region for a family of 6 with a wide age range of 7 through to 53.

A great house for all the family

  • 5 of 5

Arriving late at night we were not sure what to expect, but could not have been happier with what we found. The setting is very tranquil and the house provides plenty of space for a large group like ours. The children ranged from 6 to 15, but they all had fun playing in the pool or cycling to the local village and enjoying a game of tennis. We are used to having a view when holidaying in France, but the view here is the very pretty garden and delightful pool. We soon got very attached. Overall, great facilities if you want somewhere to relax and unwind. And if you are happy to jump in your car, some beautiful towns and chateaux are not so far away.

Beautiful Property set in the grounds of a Chateau

  • 5 of 5

We first visited the Loire valley back in 2001. It has always been on our wish list to revisit again with the intention of going back to some of our favorites.

The property description was very accurate and the location, layout, facilities were as described. When we arrived the property was clean and maintained.

On our arrival we were greeted by a call the following morning from Nigel to check everything was ok which was terrific as there is nothing worse than wishing you could speak to someone to ask a few questions. Great Customer service

We would definitely recommend the property to a friend/relatives who are looking for somewhere tranquil.

We drove down through Le Mans and stayed the night at Mecure le Man which was perfect, had the most wonderful meal in a local restaurant Le Bistrot Sur le place in Le Mans, Superb, just what we needed, great food and a bottle of Chinon. On the way back we drove via Reims to stock up on Champagne. Great week, enjoyed by everyone.

Days filled with Horse riding, Visiting Chateaus, caves, lunching and relaxing by the pool.
