About Carl and Valerie

Valerie and I are transplants from deep in the woods of Maine. We came here on vacation in January of 2012. We had read that people come here and hear the mountains calling them. We heard, went home, packed up, sold the house and here we are. We have never regretted our move.

We are laid back, "go with the flow" people. We have 2 lazy house cats and Sid, The Mayor. Sid is an older Jack Russel with a sweet disposition. He is a gentle old man that prefers non aggressive breeds.

Carl and Valerie purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Carl and Valerie chose Asheville Area

We chose this house because our land is so beautiful. When we bought it, it had been vacant for years . We have spent the past few years bringing our land back to a beautiful, park like setting.

It is constantly evolving with interesting plans for the future.

What makes this cottage unique

We are so close to a multitude of attractions, but when you come home, you are in a safe, peaceful area with views of the mountain tops. We have turkeys, the occasional cow, and chickens that wander through our yard. At night you can hear the tree frogs and owls calling.

We have a large variety of birds that visit the feeders, perfect for birdwatching.

Spacious, cozy, and well-apportioned!

  • 5 of 5

Excellent experience staying at "The Shed", which is a deceptive name because the property is actually quite spacious on the inside for 2 humans and 2 dogs.

All modern-day amenities awaited us: furnished kitchen, WiFi, all linens, and even nice toiletries in the restroom. The fenced "yard" isn't enormous, but has a comfortable sitting area, grill, and a cute garden area.

Geographically, The Shed wasn't far from Asheville, but do be aware that because of the smaller and winding roads, it takes a few extra moments. For example - the 5 miles from the property to Alt 74 probably takes a solid 10 - 12 minutes to drive, particularly at night time when visibility isn't great. This is not a knock on the property at all, but just something to be mindful of.

Communication with Val was great from the moment we booked: arrival instructions were clear and concise, and Val left us a lot of useful information on the table, plus a few other goodies.

Excellent experience all around, would not hesitate to book again!

An amazingly clean and tidy place with absolutely wonderful owners.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Carl and Valerie's The Shed was absolutely wonderful. It was cute and and very comfortable. More importantly we were pleasantly surprised at how clean Carl and Valerie kept this place. We had a wonderful time here. Valerie was very friendly and personable and would answer whatever questions we had. The Shed had great amenities with a full kitchen that was well stocked. We also enjoyed the fenced in backyard especially since we were able to bring our pups hiking with us. Our stay was wonderful. We highly recommend The Shed to others! We would definitely stay there again at our next visit. Thank you Carl and Valerie!

Welcoming, clean and cute!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience staying at The Shed and have no complaints! We arrived to a very nice welcoming note from Valerie and Carl along with some doggies treats :-) The Shed was a perfect size, super clean and had all that we needed. It was cozy, beautifully decorated and the dogs loved the fenced in yard. It was so convenient to let them out without a worry. Our visit to NC was to check out real estate and Valerie and Carl went above and beyond to help us in our venture by leaving real estates brochures and a detailed personal note with information about relocating. Will be back to stay and high recommend!

Everything was better than advertised!

  • 5 of 5

Carl & Valerie were great hosts, Our stay there was made comfortable with camaraderie, information etc. These people are real people & I consider them our friends, even only have spent one week there. The cottage & grounds were perfect for our needs -- 2 adults 2 great dogs & plenty of room to go outside & stretch your legs. Close to everything, but out of the way... We would recommend their cottage to everyone -- unless it's when we are returning! Carl & Valerie we will be back just not sure when. Have a Merry Christmas!

Awesome Experience!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed at The Shed this past weekend. Our stay was for 3 nights total. Valerie and Carl were awesome hosts! They provided almost anything we could think of. They had spices in the kitchen, towels in the bathroom, wood outside for the fire pit, a grill with grilling tools, etc.

When we arrived, we met Valerie and chatted for a bit and then she handed us an extra roll of paper towels and let us get settled in. I tried to get on the internet but I had issues, and I walked right over and knocked on Valerie's door. She came over right away and helped me figure it out.

The Shed as a whole was an awesome living space. Complete with everything you could need. Running water, a full bathroom, a TV, a bed, a full kitchen, etc.

Valerie even had a list of some suggested items to do in the area, the closest grocery store, etc.

My girlfriend and I are already talking about visiting again. We would suggest the Tiny Shed to any couple looking to get away for a relaxing weekend together.

I look forward to going back.

Thanks again, Valerie and Carl!
