About Carl and Valerie

Valerie and I are transplants from deep in the woods of Maine. We came here on vacation in January of 2012. We had read that people come here and hear the mountains calling them. We heard, went home, packed up, sold the house and here we are. We have never regretted our move.

We are laid back, "go with the flow" people. We have 2 lazy house cats and Sid, The Mayor. Sid is an older Jack Russel with a sweet disposition. He is a gentle old man that prefers non aggressive breeds.

Carl and Valerie purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Carl and Valerie chose Asheville Area

We chose this house because our land is so beautiful. When we bought it, it had been vacant for years . We have spent the past few years bringing our land back to a beautiful, park like setting.

It is constantly evolving with interesting plans for the future.

What makes this cottage unique

We are so close to a multitude of attractions, but when you come home, you are in a safe, peaceful area with views of the mountain tops. We have turkeys, the occasional cow, and chickens that wander through our yard. At night you can hear the tree frogs and owls calling.

We have a large variety of birds that visit the feeders, perfect for birdwatching.

Very Nice Cottage and Great Hosts!

  • 5 of 5

Carl and Valerie were very responsive to our "last minute" situation. As soon as we arrived, we knew they were great hosts. The cottage has everything and was very clean. The private backyard was perfect for us to unwind. Convenient location that's very peaceful. Carl and Valerie are great people and we wish them the best.

Better Than Advertised!

  • 5 of 5

The space was utterly charming, inside and out. Yes, it is small, but it is immaculate, and everything one could need is within easy reach. The fenced garden area, accessible through a separate door, is perfect for early-evening cocktails or for outdoor grilling. The overall setting--on a gentle hillside along a country road--is alive with birds, flowers, and variety of trees. A lovely spot.

Access to Asheville was faster and easier than we had imagined. We were tired from a long day of driving to the mountains from our home on the coast, but in less than an hour we had unpacked and were seated in our favorite restaurant in Biltmore Village. Other destinations, too, are within easy reach: Hendersonville, Bat Cave, Hanging Rock, Lake Lure, and more.

Carl and Valerie were friendly and accommodating hosts without being in any way obtrusive. All communications before, during, and after our visit were clear, prompt, and cordial. They have done a masterful job of converting their old garden shed into a splendid guest cottage.

We had a marvelous time, and look forward to staying there again!

Weekend Getaway Delight

  • 5 of 5

If you and your significant other are looking for a great getaway near Asheville, then check out The Shed! Val and Carl are awesome and amazing people. The tiny house is on their property and is fully stocked!

I communicated with Val in the weeks leading up to our reservation. She was very responsive and helpful. I inquired about contact information (phone number) and about the nearest grocery store. Val quickly responded to both inquiries with accurate and helpful information. The home was easy to find thanks to great directions and an accurate GPS address. Upon arrival, my boyfriend and I were greeted by Val. We ended up chatting at length with Val several times during our stay. After she greeted us, we were able to settle in and found a lovely welcome letter with Godiva chocolates waiting for us on the kitchen table. The welcome letter, as well as information posted on the front of the refrigerator, gave detailed instructions check-out procedures.

Besides providing all linens (towels bedding, etc), the owners also provide toiletries, basic condiments, and kitchen utensils. Being a coffee lover, I was thrilled to see that coffee, filters, sugar, and powdered cream was all provided. In addition, they stocked the cabinets with other items such as hot chocolate, tea bags, popcorn, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. Also, in our lovely welcome letter, Val advised that their well water had a high iron content and left six bottles of spring water, as well as a gall jug of water in the fridge for us!

Although the house can sleep three, it's more comfortable for just two people. It's great for a long getaway or a quick business trip to Asheville. Small dogs are welcomed, but be aware of the owner's restrictions. They have an old dog, Sid, who is blind and delicate. Besides a fully stocked house, wifi, cable TV and streaming services are all provided (you have to sign-in with your own accounts). I literally couldn't ask for anything else or a better place to stay.

The house is conveniently located 20 mins from Asheville and is in close proximity to Black Mountain, Lake Lure, and the Biltmore. I could spend days speaking to the wonderfully accommodating couple and the tiny house, but words wouldn't do the experience justice. My boyfriend and I will definitely be back to visit! So, if you're looking for a weekend away, then I strongly recommend The Shed. Trust me, it will not disappoint!
