I've lived all over the US, but for me, nothing quite beats this area's combination of natural beauty, and historical setting, all within a two hour drive of Manhattan! As a former Boy Scout and sometime farm boy, this area reminds me of my youth and I love the proximity of nature - there are loads of opportunities for hiking and fishing- but it's also great just to be a part of it. This area casts a spell over me that gets stronger every year.
David Lawrence purchased this cottage in 2000
This house charmed me from the first time I saw it. It's very private - tucked away in the woods - and many locals don't even know it's there. It looks like something Teddy Roosevelt might have lived in, but it has all the modern amenities. It's also built properly, with a copper roof, wide-board pine floors and a terrace made of local bluestone. As a fisherman, I was immediately smitten by the 1,500' of private access to a NYS, DEC certified trout stream.
One of my favorite features is the screened porch that runs the length of the house and faces the yard. In the morning I like to walk through the French doors out to the porch and settle Into a comfortable chair to drink my coffee and watch the robins hunting for worms. Mostly, the only sound is the flow of the river. Sometimes a turkey or a deer will wander by. However, if you know what to listen for, the woods are filled with turkeys who chatter all day long. During the warm months, we also have loads of amphibians - orange salamanders, and green and brown frogs and toads. Summertime is also an excellent time to observe the beautiful dragonflies and hummingbirds darting around the house in search of a meal. And when the sun goes down, or it's raining, it’s great to eat out there - surrounded by nature, but protected too.
David & Caroline have a beautifully maintained home which we were very happy to rent! Our stay was even better than we had hoped. David provided loads of very helpful information on the house and on the area. They are very thoughtful on providing renters with everything they need, plus more. When we arrived we were thrilled to see that the property was NOT just a rental property with a thrown together, cheap interior but IT IS a home that the owners love, maintain and use themselves - We felt like friends let us stay in their home. The interior is cozy and they have high quality items – like the pots, bed, etc. We had excellent weather so we spent the majority of our time in the pool, the patio or on the porch. The local farmers markets made it easy to want to BBQ and make the most out of the outside space. The property is private and just what you want to get away from it all. David was very responsive leading up to the rental and also very helpful. Couldn’t ask for more and would highly recommend this rental! Also - our dog had a blast with all the land, on our hikes in Minnewaska state park and at the local swimming hole. Thank you David & Caroline!
Everything was and went as hoped. The host was more than pleasant and helpful, and the property was just wonderful. Beautiful decor, great kitchen space, and a lot of interesting books and pieces of furniture. Private, secluded, just what we wished for. Independent of weather, this is a place to enjoy an memorable weekend!
