THE NEIGHBORHOOD:

Capitol Hill's H Street Corridor (and adjacent NoMa -- North of Massachusetts) is an area rediscovered: for its history, its nuance, its tradition and its "neighborhoodness." The area has bragging rights to unprecedented change and improvement: from new, award winning restaurants (such as Ethiopiac), as well as much raved about food establishments (such as the famous, Ben's Chili Bowl), to redevelopments, such as the U-line (home to the first U.S. Beatles concert) and Union Market. And, all of it is centrally located on the Red Line while within walking/biking distance (there are two Capital Bike Share stands within a three block walk of the house) of The Capitol, Eastern Market, Gallery Place (National Gallery)/China Town (including the Verizon Center), Nationals Park and the Smithsonians -- though you won't want to leave the H Street Corridor!

GUEST ACCESS:

Guests will have a private entrance with a keyless entry as well as a view of the back patio garden from the back bedroom. The back garden may also be available for use (upon prior discussion and arrangements). Guests will have use of wireless internet (code provided), w/d, Apple TV and a video game system in the second bedroom. We want all guests to feel at home!

DOG FRIENDLY FLAT:

Bring dogs when and if you can! We have a list of fantastic dog walkers (should you be out for the whole day) and one of the best dog stores in the city is three blocks away, so Fido will have fun, too. There will, of course, be a dog-friendly fee ($25/dog for the length of the stay) in case of accidents/damage. However, we are 100% fans of all dogs!

PERKS:

• Free use for one of a Capital Bike Share bike (usage over the allotted 30-minute per ride will incur additional fees; in addition, those failing to return the fob will be upcharged).

• French Press coffee maker and award winning, gourmet coffee beans. For those who prefer tea, there is a selection of teas.

• The full kitchen allows for home cooking (there are two supermarkets within a 8 block radius).

TRANSPORTATION OVERVIEW:

Airports:

National Airport: 10 minute drive/ 30 minute Metro ride.

BWI Airport: 25 minute drive/30 minute MARC Rail ride.

Dulles Airport: 45 minute drive.

Rail:

Six blocks from Union Station -- hub for Amtrak, MARC, VRE, Metro and a variety of bus systems.

Metro:

Redline. The most used line on the Metro system. 2.5 blocks from the NoMa/New York Avenue Metro stop. Six blocks from the Union Station stop.

Bike:

There are six Capital Bike Share stations within a 10 block radius. A bike 7-mile bike path, The Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT), one of the best off-road bike lanes in DC, is 2.5 blocks away.

Walk:

You can get to more than 10 of the top 25 major tourist attractions in the DC area on foot (30-40 minute walk) including: The Capitol, Smithsonians/National Mall, Eastern Market/8th Street, Navy Yard/Barracks Row, Nationals Stadium/SE Waterfront and Arena Stage, Union Market, H Street/H Street Trolley, Spy Museum, National Gallery of Art, U Street, China Town/Verizon Center.

HOUSE RULES:

There is absolutely no smoking of any kind tolerated. You will be greeted by a clean home with fresh linens. I expect you to treat your home away from home with respect.

CHERRY BLOSSOM SEASON:

Peak bloom for the 2017 Cherry Blossom season has not yet been announced: in 2016, the National Park Service announced an early season: "The flowering trees around the Tidal Basin are predicted to be at 'peak bloom' between March 31 and April 3."

The National Cherry Blossom Festival in 2016 ran from March 18 through April 17.

Here’s a sampling of the festivities from last year's schedule.

March 26, 5-6:30 p.m.: The festivities will kick off with musical performances at the Warner Theatre. (513 13th St. NW)

April 2, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Kites will take flight over the National Mall during the sixth annual Blossom Kite Festival.

April 5, 2:30 to 4 p.m.: A crowd will gather for the Japanese Stone Lantern Festival, with traditional Japanese music, the presentation of the United States and Japan Cherry Blossom QueenS and the the 2015 Cherry Blossom Princesses at the Tidal Basin at Independence Avenue and 17th Street SW.

April 17, 1 to 5 p.m.: The Anacostia River Festival will celebrate the waterway with free canoeing and kayaking, live music, pop-up stores and a bike parade at Anacostia Park (Anacostia Drive and Good Hope Road SE).

Please note: Rooms are more expensive during the time frame and rooms go quickly, too.

About Cari Shane

Born and raised in Manhattan, I am a journalist and social media strategist. We have three almost grown children and a new puppy.

We love meeting new people. But, interaction is up to each, individual guest. We are available to answer questions, offer suggestions, recommend restaurants for cocktails and dining. We live in the rowhouse upstairs.

Cari Shane purchased this house in 2014

Why Cari Shane chose Washington DC

Born and raised in Manhattan, I am a city-kid and wanted to live in a rowhouse in the District. I expanded the footprint of the existing 1910 rowhouse, modernized it and created for my family a home that could house growing children (and future grandchildren) while also creating a rental property for guests.

What don't I love about this neighborhood?! It has and IS everything that is wonderful about a small neighborhood in a big city. It has personality, history, convenience, entertainment, food and fantastic transportation options, including the new H Street Trolley. Two blocks from the Red Line (the most used Metro line in Greater DC) and six blocks from Union Station, the H Street Corridor is a central location with six Capital Bike Share stations in a 10 block radius. Union Market, brags pop-up events (including food, gift and fashion shows), a movie theater showing indy films (and home-movie style seating), restaurants, a wine shop, gourmet cheese shop, local seafood, homemade ice creams and gourmet chocolates, bread and coffee not to mention a farmer's market on Sundays during the warmer weather months.

On the "other side of the tracks" (under the Metro rail bridge in what is officially called NoMa), lunch time is ripe with the award winning tastes of food trucks: from lobster roll to BBQ ribs and popcorn, DC's food truck scene is a treat for the eyes and taste buds.

One block from the food truck scene is North Capitol Street with a view of the majestic Capitol (some of the opening shots from the show "House of Cards" were taken from this side of the quadrant). With the Capitol building so close as well as NPR and CNN, the area is a veritable political and media red carpet of famous faces.

What makes this house unique

Brand new renovation.

Air/heating units in each room that are controlled by the guest.

Keyless entry.

Full kitchen.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fab stay in Cari's apartment. Easy to find and really convenient with street parking too. The place was modern, spacious and had everything we might need. Would definitely stay again. Thanks Cari!

Beautiful ROW house

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay, and if only my husband and I are coming to the DC area, we would consider staying here again. We had a couple of issues...first being that the unlock code didn't work upon arrival, but we finally were able to get in after Cari returned from dinner. Cari stated that she would refund a portion of our fee to make up for our arrival issue, which was very nice. Second issue was we couldn't get the television to work in the main living area, and finally decided that the television in the back bedroom wasn't connected for viewing regular television either. The opportunity to view television while winding down from a busy day with our eight-year-old grandson would have been very nice.

The flat is very nice, but is a bit small for four people for several days. Additionally, the king-sized bed in the back bedroom is extremely hard, and we didn't sleep well at all. We tried putting the down comforter under the fitted sheet to soften it a bit, but it didn't really help much. If you like a very hard bed, then this wouldn't be a problem, but for those of us that have older bodies, it isn't a fit.

This location is very convenient to local restaurants and shopping, which we took advantage of several times. It was great being able to leave our car parked during our stay, and we utilized Uber extensively for transportation . Cari's suggestion for District Dog Walkers was perfect, and Aaralyn took good care of our Daisy girl for us.

Cari is a delight, and I would recommend her property for a couple or maybe three people. The refurbishing of this 1910 ROW house is beautiful, and every effort is made to welcome her visitors to the property.

Owner's Response: We love the four-star review of our hip, mid-century flat in the city! We are sorry there was a problem with the keyless entry. We have never had a problem with it in the past. However, we are always committed to offering a discount when our guests are inconvenienced. The keyless entry been a lifesaver for many of our guests whose arrivals have been delayed to all hours of the night or whose group members arrive at different times. We are lucky not to have ever had a problem with the keyless entry before. We were unaware that the main TV wasn't working properly. We wish we would have known so we could have gotten on the issue immediately. Subsequently, the TV is now working like a charm, as it should be. With respect to the TV monitor in the back bedroom - this TV is strictly for video game playing (i.e, not connected to Apple TV) with a video game system stored in the dresser. Happily, we are thrilled that our guests love the location of the flat, enjoying top rated DC restaurants just a quick walk away. With shopping and wonderful nightlife in our small enclave in our nation's capitol. The dog walker is a wonderful find. Our dogs love her as well!!! We are excited when our guests return for subsequent visits treating them as friends and family (FF), not only with a hug but also a nice FF percentage off future stays. We have had so many "repeaters" that our friend-network is growing by leaps and bounds. On a personal note: Thank you for the personal compliments. Being a kind host is very important to me. It was wonderful meeting you and your family and we hope that DC was a wonderful, fabulous trip!

5-STAR FAMILY & DOG FRIENDLY!

THE SPACE

This 1910 rowhouse was completely renovated in 2014, debuting in 2015. Located in a neighborhood that is swiftly becoming DC's "it" neighborhood, the rowhouse was chronicled in the Washington Post Sunday Home & Design Issue in April 2015, penned by your host, Cari Shane.

While we are new to VRBO, our 5-star listing has made us "Super Hosts" on a competing listing site (which we cannot mention here).

At Cari's in the City, you will be greeted by a professionally cleaned home with fresh linens. We expect you to treat your home away from home with respect. There is absolutely no smoking tolerated.

GUEST ACCESS

At Cari's in the City, we provide an opportunity for our visitors to stay in our 2-bedroom private access flat with 2-bedrooms and 2-private bathrooms. Room 1 sports a queen-sized bed, full bath, closet/dresser; Room 2 has a funky Mid-Century couch that converts into 3 different bed styles: king bed; 2-twin beds with a table in between; 1-twin, 1-swivel chair and table. Or, instead of a couch, 2-swivel chairs with a table. The room also has a full bath, closet/dresser and a wall mounted TV with Apple TV, Blue Ray and PS4. There is a full kitchen/dining and living/sleeping area, a flat screen/wall-mounted TV (with Apple-TV link) and W/D (with detergents, iron, etc.). The flat sleeps up to 5 (with 2/bedroom). A funky couch in the living area easily converts into a twin-size+ bed. Please note: the 5th guest requires an additional fee of $25/night.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The H Street Corridor (and adjacent NoMa -- North of Massachusetts) is an area rediscovered: for its history, its nuance, its tradition and its "neighborhoodness." The area has bragging rights to unprecedented change and improvement: from new, award winning restaurants (made popular by presidents as well as members of Congress and correspondents who work at nearby CNN and NPR) as well as much raved about food establishments including 6 of the top 100 within walking distance. We have the famous, Ben's Chili Bowl, the new U-line development to open in September 2016 (home to the first U.S. Beatles concert) and much raved about Union Market. And, all of it is centrally located on the Red Line while within walking/biking distance (there are 2-Capital Bike Share stands within a 3-block walk of the house) of The Capitol (25-min walk), Eastern Market (25-min walk), Gallery Place (National Gallery)/China Town (including the Verizon Center) (30-min walk), Nationals Park (15-min bike ride) and the Smithsonians (45-min walk) -- though you won't want to leave the H Street Corridor!

The neighborhood has and IS everything that is wonderful about a small neighborhood in a big city. It has personality, history, convenience, entertainment, food and fantastic transportation options, including the new H Street Trolley. The flat is 3-blocks from two different supermarkets -- the gourmet Harris Teeter and the local Giant. For transportation convenience, the flat is two blocks from the Red Line, the most used line in the DC Metro system, a 15-min walk from Union Station and a 15-min drive from National Airport; 35-min from BWI.

DOG FRIENDLY

We want all guests to feel at home! That means you should bring dogs when and if you can! I have a list of fantastic dog walkers (should you be out for the whole day) and one of the best dog stores in the city is 3-blocks away, so Fido will have fun, too. There will, of course, be a dog-friendly fee in case of accidents/damage. We charge a $25/dog pet fee for the length of your stay.

EASY ACCESS

No keys to pick up: Guests will have a private entrance with a keyless entry. The code will be provided prior to arrival.

GARDEN & AMENITIES

The back garden may also be available for use (upon prior arangement and additional fee).

Guests will have use of wireless internet (code provided), W/D, 2-TVs connected to Apple TV, a PS4 video game system with Blue Ray.

PERKS DURING YOUR STAY

I also provide a number of perks such as free use for one of a Capital Bike Share bike (usage over the allotted 30-min/ride will incur additional fees; in addition, those failing to return the fob will be upcharged), a French Press coffee maker and award winning, gourmet coffee beans. For those who prefer tea, there is a selection of teas. The full kitchen allows for home cooking (there are two supermarkets within a 8 block radius).

FALL IN LOVE WITH DC

It is my mission to have visitors fall in love with DC at any time of year. I will do everything I can to help make your stay comfortable, fun, enriching and to fill you with such a long list of things to do that you have to come back for another (many) visits!

NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE

There are steps required to access the flat; while a wheelchair cannot navigate inside the bathroom, the apartment itself has no internal stairs.

If you have any special requests, please let me know so I can do my best to make your stay in the nation's Capital even better!
