About Peg McAllister

We purchased this beautifully located cottage in 2005, near the Wai O'pae Tidepools. We love the serenity, the endless options of things to do, the sound of the ocean, the tropical fragrant flowers, coconuts, papaya and aloe growing on the property. Each day brings a beautiful sunrise over the tidepools, snorkeling among colorful fish and coral, a place to relax and to enjoy family and friends.

Peg McAllister purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Peg McAllister chose Puna District

Our Hawaiian cottage features a unique natural lava heated swimming pool, tropical plants, palms, even a Black crowned Heron comes to fish on occasion. An outdoor lava BBQ, wrap around porch and fully screened in lanai. Privacy on all sides of this property, offering lush vegetation and ocean sounds.

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the wrap around porch offers changing views of the natural lava heated pool as the tide changes twice each day. I fell in love with the property because of the pool, I jumped in during my first visit with the realtor! I was sold that this is where I want to spend my vacations. Many of our guests come back year after year, too!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time. The house was beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely lovely time. The home and property were beautiful. There were only 2 things that were not perfect. The first was that the internet seemed to go in and out quite a bit. The second thing was that the remote controls for the TV did not work. Other than those 2 things we had an awesome time and we would definitely go back!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting me know. I'll ask our property manager to check both, probably just need new batteries in the remotes. And I'll call into Hawaiian Tel on the internet. I was just there in October for 10 days and had no issues. I always appreciate feedback! Mahalo!

Comfortable home and great location!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here a few years ago, and found it largely unchanged. We still loved the lanai, a perfect place to relax and read. The kitchen and furnishings in the living room are starting to show their age, but are still ok. The beds are comfy. With no A/C, the addition of portable fans was very appreciated, and kept us comfortable. Our biggest problem was being inundated with tiny gnats, which somehow managed to get inside through the screens, making a mess. The screens were coated with them, too. It may have been this time of year; I don't remember having a gnat problem when we were here before. One of the best things about this house is the "jungle" around 3 sides, since it's surrounded by vacant lots. It was very peaceful and offered great nature sounds (we LOVE the coqui frogs.) The 3-minute walk to the Wai"Opae pools is a big plus. Thanks, Peg, for a great stay!

Owner's Response: Aloha! So glad you enjoyed your stay again. We just left our cottage in paradise and had a good time doing some painting and touch ups to the living area and kitchen. Tropical climates do produce bugs and rust. Our neighbors reported an outbreak also of the gnats at the same time as your stay. All the screens have been washed, refrigerator and cupboards painted. We enjoyed the local fruits, coconut water, and skin refreshing aloe from the yard. We installed additional ventilation and enjoyed the trade breezes. Thanks for your review and hope to have you back again. Mahalo!

VacationLand Pond House

  • 2 of 5

Place was nice, but needs to have AC. It was unbearable, I have to leave after 1 day. Had to leave the window open for air and the frogs were so loud I couldn't sleep. It was my fault for not realizing you need AC in Hawaii. Had to pay to rent another place. I guess I'm not tough enough, it was 90 degrees there.

Owner's Response: Aloha dear guest, I am sorry that you were not comfortable in our vacation home. I wish you had contacted me at the time. I was not aware that you decided to leave. Yes, in the tropics, we always leave the windows open and enjoy the breezes created by the ocean and aided by the ceiling fans. We also have the lanai, that is screened and open all the time and the wraparound porch. Some houses don't even have windows, only screens. As for the frogs, they remind me of crickets from the midwest and a soothing night music. Please contact me if you'd like to discuss. We want all our guests to be satisfied and I've never had a guest be unhappy before at our vacation home, as evidenced by the number of great reviews. Mahalo, Peg

Cute & close to tidepools

  • 4 of 5

We loved how close the location was to one of the entrances to the tidepools & enjoyed drinking coconut water from the coconuts that fell off the trees in the yard.

Very quiet area even with the occasional people walking by to the tidepools.

Minimal geckos & bugs inside house, thank goodness haha.

Owner's Response: Glad you were able to enjoy the fresh coconut juice and enjoyed the Tidepools for snorkeling. Tropical climates do offer chances to enjoy all of nature. Often a blue heron comes down to the pool to fish. Thank you for your review.

Awesome! Everything you could want for a holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property! We used it as our base to explore the east coast and south east corner of the Big Island. The property was clean, well maintained, had everything we wanted and there were so many places to sit and relax! Although the location is a little out of the way, we loved it. It is in a secluded, quiet neighbourhood and close to tidal pools. The natural lava pool in the front yard was my partners dream come true (a lot less maintenance than his marine fish tank at home!!). My only disappointment is that Hurricane Madeline didn't provide us the weather to swim in the pool nor snorkel in the local tidal pools just down the road. Communications with Peg, the owner, were easy and fast. I highly recommend this property, I wouldn't hesitate to return!

Tranquil, cozy rainforest retreat

  • 5 of 5

Punana Kiowai is a gem - a quiet, cozy well-laid out pond house perfectly situated near the Wai'opae marine sanctuary, Ahalanui beach park and the funky town of Pahoa. Although the tidal pools at the marine sanctuary took a beating in 2014 from Hurricane Izelle, the water is still gin-clear, with abundant marine life and a slew of pools protected from open ocean and geothermally heated by volcanic action from Kiluaea. They are a snorkel's paradise, safe for even the smallest snorkeler. Ahalanui, too, is a geothermal hot pond, heated around its perimeter by the volcano, but with a fresh admixture of cool seawater pouring in from its western flank. And, then there is also Punana's own hot pond, a beautiful little pool with its own very sociable marine life. All of these things make this pond house a highly attractive location, along with the many thoughtful amenities Peg McAllister has added to her house, and is perfect for a couple, a small family or a couple of friends. Since cell service is tenuous in Kapoho, the addition of Wi-Fi and a computer goes a long way in helping those for whom long-distance communication is critical - believe me, not every pond house has that, and those with frail parents or other familial issues derive a lot more reassurance and much more vacation relaxation and enjoyment with those little additions. Peg's comfortable, relaxed and well-designed house also puts within easy reach the bubbling hub of the Outer Space night market at Uncle Robert's Awa Club in Kalapana, as well as the lava-viewing area (now the walk-out-to-the-lava area) of Kaimu, at the End of the Road on Highway 30. (The lava is currently flowing into the sea off the lava fields, about a 4.25 mile walk (or bike ride) west from the parking lot in Kaimu Homesteads, with the advantage, from the Kaimu end, of being both upwind from the vog (volcanic gas emission) and being able to rent a bike. It can also be accessed from the end of Chain of Craters Road in Volcanoes National Park, but you can only walk it or take your own bike on the gravel Coastal Emergency Access Road.) Pohoiki is also just down the road from Punana Kiowai, which is home to Isaac Hale beach park and the boat slip from which all the lava-viewing boats embark. And then there is the jewel in the crown of east Hawai'i - Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park. Again, an easy drive from Punana Kiowai, which is in and of itself a charming, relaxing, well-designed house and lovely hot pond.
