Why Chuck Svendsen chose Minnesota

This is a custom built home which was completed in 2008. It is absolutely gorgeous. Chris Gunderson and his family from Vermilion Range Construction did an amazing job bringing our dream to reality. Their craftsmanship is immediately seen in details such as the diamond willow railing and the finish on the reclaimed wooden flooring. We built in this area because of year round activities available on the iron range. This property provides easy access to skiing, biking, snowmobiling and world class golf courses.

Relaxing Perfection

  • 5 of 5

We were having trouble finding lodging in the area that would work with our needs. The owners were more than helpful in finding alternatives and putting something together for us. With the extra beds and bedrooms it was the perfect setup for our stay. The home itself was beautiful, amazing at every turn. The setting was quiet and relaxing and we would love the opportunity to come back in the summer season to enjoy the lake some. We were there in the winter and it had close and easy access to Giant's Ridge and the ski trails there. We loved it and couldn't have asked for a better location or lodging for our stay!

Fabulous Property and Owner

  • 5 of 5

The house is spectacular! The windows and wood everywhere are so warm and inviting. We had a reunion of three families (six kids and six adults with three dogs) and there was plenty of space, privacy, and fun for everyone. The giant bath/whirlpool and shower were a huge hit for all. The kitchen is a dream for group cooking to feed a crew and the walk in pantry was so helpful. We swam, canoed, kayaked, made s'mores, fished, and created wonderful memories. Sunset views from the dock and decks were spectacular. The wifi router died and Chuck had a new one delivered in short order. There is limited phone reception unless your vendor is ATT, but for me that was a bonus because most of us wanted to disconnect from the grid to concentrate on family. It is obvious that the owners take pride both in their home and in being responsive to those who are able to enjoy their home. Everything we needed except food and clothing was provided. We also loved the Tower-Sudan Mine tour, visiting the Hibbing open mines, and had fun at the local county fair with the kids. You can see the Giants Ridge runs from the dock and I'm sure this would be a wonderful haven for a ski week or weekend. We would highly recommend this property and will definitely keep it on our list of places to rent again.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This was just what we were looking for! The home was beautiful and open. The beds were comfortable and sheets were soft. I was impressed by the cutlery and pots/pans they had available. I had brought some of my own, having stayed other places that were not this good. It was not necessary to bring pans or knives of my own. It was nice to have the canoe, kayaks and paddle board available for us to use. The board games and movies were an added perk. The lake was perfect! Kids loved to swim. The home owner was very receptive to our emails asking questions while we were there. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a cabin getaway with their family!

Only thing I would recommend is an additional couch in the living room to accommodate everyone during movie time. If the TV was in the corner , it could make room for a bigger couch or an additional couch. Thank you for the wonderful family time! You have a great little get away! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Beautiful location and lots of family fun

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Voyageurs Retreat with two other families and we can hardly wait to go again. We originally were looking for a house that would give us privacy and that included lots of fun activities for our families to enjoy. In all, there were 8 children and six adults in our group. Our children spent four days out on the canoe, the paddle board and the kayaks. We made s'mores and cooked outside and enjoyed the beach down the road. Some evenings we played card games around the table or

The house itself was amazing. We loved the large tables and the gourmet kitchen. There was lots of space for preparing dinners. One rainy morning, the kids baked cookies using the oversized island to measure and mix.

We took one day trip the the North Shore. If we return, we'd visit even more locations. This time we climbed at Gooseberry Falls. It was beautiful.

The owners were great. Chuck responded promptly to every email I sent ahead of out visit. And after we arrived, we had a couple small questions and Chuck answered his phone even late in the evening. The house was clean and very well-kept. While we were there, the owner had additional shampoos, soaps, and conditioners to the house as well as cleaning supplies. The house still had items, but he knew they were low and didn't want us to run out. We appreciated the attentiveness to those kind of details.

We would definitely recommend this house to a friend and hope to get back ourselves!

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

Our initial intent was to stay near the Boundary Waters area. We could find no available accommodations, thus we were forced to direct our search outwards. Coming across this Biwabik location. We had no idea on what to expect, no knowledge of the Giants Ridge location.

What a great "best kept secret". The vacation home was modern and spacious. There was ample room for our family of 10 (4 adult children and their spouses). The location defiantly had a remote, undeveloped, wilderness sense without actually being remote. Sabin and Wynne Lakes where sparsely populated. Across the lake was the a golf course and ski hill that were out of site from this vacation home. All you see is and feel is NATURE and the company of your companions.

We were able to swim off the dock, but preferred the short drive from the home to the sandy beech. We had perfect swimming conditions - warm days and refreshing water temperatures. The water has a rust tinge that is the result of peat draining into the lake. It was perfectly clean water - no weeds or over grown algae. Reminded me of lakes in the Boundary Waters - deep, dark water.

The open room design and grand window views were spectacular. Kayaks, a canoe and floatation devises were provided. Well kept fire pit area. Bring your bikes! The home is near multiple bike trails, including the Mesibi bike trail. For those of you who like to golf and ski, I can only imagine how thrilled you would be with this vacation home.

Short on groceries or libations, no problem - Biwabik is a quick ride to town. Ely is less than an hours drive away. However, there was so much to enjoy about this home that there really wasn't a need to venture any further North.

A great place. Glad we found it.

Great home - wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

I would wholeheartedly recommend this property. We had a wonderful 4-days here during July 2016 and had exactly the kind of multi-generational family trip that we were hoping to experience. Hiking, fishing, kayaking and golf are all available and Lake Superior and Boundary Waters are not that far. Chuck was great to work with and the home is as advertised - it is set on a beautiful piece of land amidst evergreens and quaking Aspens and the massive windows in the main living area optimize the view. There is a dining table just off the kitchen plus bar stools and there is also a large dining table is a fantastic 3-season porch just off the kitchen so lots of dining choices. The home is beautiful and well cared for. The kitchen is well appointed with nice appliances. There's a washer/dryer in the unfinished downstairs for those needing that. Regarding sleeping accommodations - there is a master on the main floor - the only bedroom on that level so something to be aware of if you have a few older folks who can't climb a staircase. Also - there is only one master suite - (not something most families would worry about). Our son and grandsons spent hours fishing off the dock. Two of us discovered the kayaks and experienced kayaking for the first time and we are now shopping for kayaks of our own. We did not get to use the fire pit due to rain storms but it looks like it would be a great place to roast marshmallows or hot dogs. The one issue I would mention, so you are not surprised by it, is the shower in the master - the water doesn't drain on it's own so it requires that you use a squeegee to move the water to the drain. All in all this was a great choice for us.
