About Monica

We, Steve and Monica, are both originally from Rogers City. We attended school together and were high school sweethearts. Over the course of the next 20+ years, we lived in cities all over the country, including New York and Chicago, and (finally) married in 2014. We now reside in Northern Michigan with our two beloved rescue dogs.

Why Monica chose Michigan

The Hideaway has been in Monica's family for decades, and it was recently passed down to us. We have renovated the house and added many modern touches, while still maintaining the home's 1950's charm. We look forward to sharing the Hideaway and the unparalleled natural beauty of the area with our guests.

Beautiful little home to vacation in!

  • 5 of 5

What a nice surprise this "Lake Huron Hideaway" was for my family. We got to the house and had no trouble getting in, everything was as Monica said it would be. We loved it from the minute we walked in, Monica and Steve had welcomed up with wonderful fresh Hydrangeas and a very thoughtful welcome gift for our grandchildren and us to enjoy. The house is beautiful and we had plenty of room to spread out and not feel we were on top of one another. Our grandchildren loved the games that were available and it helped when we had some pop up rain showers blow over. There is also a TV that you can use to watch DVD's. We were only a short half block walk to the water, and we were able to ride our bikes to see the light house. We had a lot of great evening bomb fires out back and loved using the grill to make a couple of our evening meals. 4 short miles to Roger city to pick up pizza, grab an ice cream cone or shop. there is also an area where you can pull over and also enjoy some beach area in between. From the mouths of our grandkids.. these were the best beds ever! They loved that there was one for each of them and loved all the pillows!! We had the best week ever and was so thankful we found this gem on line. I don't think any one could be disappointed with renting this little hideaway.

Perfect Get-Away Gem

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this cottage the last week of July 2017 and have already reserved again for next year. The day before we were to arrive my father died, and Monica was very supportive about us bringing my mom with us. The cottage was very cute and had everything we needed to make us comfortable. There were many dvds, books, and a record player with records. The towels were soft and plush (as was the bedding). We like to cook, and the kitchen was well-appointed. We enjoyed the porch on the road side for seeing Lake Huron. We also enjoyed the views to the fenced-in backyard from the back porch and from the kitchen and the backyard itself was lovely. We had a couple of cool nights, and the furnace warmed us up quickly. We also had a couple of hot nights, and found the breeze from the lake ample to keep us comfortable (plus there were fans...which we did not end up needing). The playroom was loaded with fun things for the family such as ping-pong and yard games. The washer and dryer were new, but there was also a clothesline with clothespins for our beach towels. We even had the use of a wagon for carrying our chairs and umbrella down to the beach. This cottage is just steps away from Lake Huron and also Hoeft State Park which has many hiking trails and a bike trail leading into Rogers City.

Will Come Back!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this adorable cottage--I hesitate to call it "little" because there is so much space to sprawl out. Stayed three nights over the 4th of July week with my mom who's 85, my sister and brother-in-law, my husband and our dog. The house was meticulously clean. For full disclosure, there were a lot of black ants, but I know that a beach house in the woods this close to the lake is going to have a lot of ants, and who knows how fastidiously clean other renters had been? [EDIT 7/21: I went back to read the reviews on the page, and noted a negative review left by the renter who stayed for ten days before us. They had overstayed, we knew, because the very gracious cleaners were super apologetic about the house not being ready by check in time; because Monica thanked us after we checked out for leaving the house so clean (as anyone should) we had sort of figured who ever was there before us had not. It was true we could not use the new washer because it was broken; I suspect the ant situation was an anomaly encouraged by the conditions the previous renters left the house after 10 days, and the fact that they did not mention ants in their review strengthens this conviction. The fact that these small visitors and the broken washer were the only evidence of the previous guests' stay says a great deal about the awesomeness of Monica and her cleaning team!] The backyard fire pit was awesome, and the game room provided the opportunity for some intense ping pong matches. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we could want--we only ate out once. The best part for me was location: there is a *small* public beach less than a block away, and we were able to get our Labrador out in the water with us kayaking and swimming, which was awesome, and made lugging the kayaks up from Arkansas worth it. That said, I imagine the area is just beautiful in winter, too, and the house super cozy--we would love to come back and go snowshoeing on nearby trails. In addition, the owner went above and beyond, shipping my husband's wallet home to us when he forgot it. Be warned--there is no internet and no cable, and very limited mobile reception in the backyard only, but that actually enhanced our stay: we spent more time *together* and watched a bunch of classic movies (the DVD collection is OUTSTANDING). Thank you to Monica for a wonderful and much needed vacation!

Monica & Steve July 9-July15 2017

Thank you so very much for allowing us to spend our vacation in your jewel called Lake Huron Hideaway! (All 7 of us!)

Everything was beyond expectations!

Our 1800 mile trip was well worth it, I hope we can stay here again and make this an annual event!

Although I will be seriously considering flying into Traverse City & then renting a car! LOL!

The Smores' were a great touch and your attention to detail in the house and more importantly to your guests is AWESOME!!!

Just a very beautiful home and a GREAT TIME was had by all despite the uncooperative weather.

Thank you & Best Wishes

This is not a beach house !What a way to end a vacation! This is the text I received from Monica

  • 1 of 5

We stayed 10 days-had children and it was sandy from beach not "filthy". Who wants to stay in a beach house where sand is not tolerated? Notice name calling.

MONICA :

Ann, we just got back from the house. I cannot tell you how disappointed we are. We put a great deal of effort into providing a great vacation rental. The note you left in our guestbook said the house looked like something from Pinterest when you entered. You certainly did not leave it that way. In fact, in the two years we have been renting out the house, you are the guests that left it in the worst condition.

We understand you checked out a half hour late, and you had a child at the house (even though your reservation was for six adults). In addition, you placed dirty used sheets with clean sheets, and dirty dish towels with clean towels. The biggest problem you left was the washing machine, which is brand new. We found a great amount of sand in the washer, and it now is not working properly. We will charge the price for repair or replacement against the damage repair policy you purchased. You also used the remainder of our bleach (for what I cannot imagine). The house was filthy, and you rearranged the furniture. We will never rent to you again.

ANN:

Wow, I am very sorry and shocked to get this. We removed the cartridge that had regular detergent so that we could bypass and use the unscented detergent. Just making sure you know that in case that is why your washing machine isn't working. We certainly did not put sandy clothing in the machine so not sure what happened but I am disappointed that you assumed it is our fault. We had no problems whatsoever with the washing machine and used it last night for 3 loads. I would argue this point as false accusation if pressed by the insurance company. Could it be coincidental over time near a beach? We NEVER used any bleach. Regarding the sheets being mixed, we washed sheets and towels several times not wanting to go 10 days using same ones. I put all dirty towels in basket as you requested so the others were clean just not put away. The house was very dirty- I agree. Where was the vacuume cleaner? We swept the floor with the provided broom several times. Where were the cleaning supplies?

Monica: Learn how to spell. And how to treat a vacation rental home with respect. There is no "bypass" on our machine and you just confirmed that you damaged. And you need advice on how to clean sand before entering a house??! Are you a child

Owner's Response: We have been renting our house, which Monica inherited from her father, to guests for two years. It takes a great deal of trust between owner and guest to make sure that all involved have an enjoyable experience. The advice we received regarding guests was that 99% would be wonderful. And that has been our experience - we love our guests! They come from all over the country and are fantastic. We also received advice that 1% of our guests would be "that" guest, the one that every owner dreads. Ann proved to be that 1%. Ann -- among other things -- made material misrepresentations in her reservation request, failed to pay for extra days she later added on (a fee we waived because we do not want to further engage with her), left the house in appalling condition that we have never before seen, and damaged our brand new washing machine. When we notified her about the pine needles, sand, and dirt she left in the house (including pine needles in the cupboard underneath the bathroom sink; cupfuls of sand in the bedsheets; and wadded-up, dirty, used sheets filled with pine needles in the drawer where we keep clean linens), her response was that we should provide guests with advice on how to clean sand from one's feet. We refuse to insult our guests' intelligence as Ann has suggested. Ann's review above -- made after we informed her of issues with the house -- is far different from the glowing review left in our guest book, which stated the house looked like something from Pinterest. The information above is not at all accurate of correspondence with Ann. My advice to any owner who decides to rent to Ann is to -- at the very least -- quadruple your customary cleaning fee. We continue to welcome guests who understand that we are renting a treasured home that we strive to make welcoming and comfortable to all, and that -- just as we treat our guests with respect -- we value the same in return.

Hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

If you want a place to disconnect from the stresses of fast paced life, this is the place! My husband and I celebrated our one year anniversary here and loved every restful second. This place felt like a home away from home, no pun intended. You can't go wrong with booking this place.
