About the property

2 bedroom, sleeps 6, rustic charm, amenities, cozy, clean, 10 acres, wildlife

Yak Ridge cabins were newly completed in Fall 2015. Our deluxe cabins are nestled in the heart of the Black Hills and offer rustic charm as well as modern amenities. Cabin #1 offers a 2-Bedroom design with a full kitchen and bath and a covered porch. The cabins sleeps up to 6 guests (bedroom #1 queen bed, bedroom #2 two twins, and living/dining with a queen sofa sleeper). If cabin #1 is already booked for your travel dates, please check out cabin #3 (vrbo property - 741538) it is virtually identical to cabin #1)

Our cabins feature the work of local craftsmen and artisans. Many local and sustainable materials were used in the construction of the cabins. Vintage decor and quality furnishings provide rustic charm and comfortable surroundings for your stay in the Black Hills.

Centrally located in the Black Hills just 3/4 mile from Highway 16 we offer the best of both worlds – easy access as well as peace and tranquility. Yak Ridge is only a short drive from Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Sheridan Lake, Pactola Reservoir, Mickelson Trail, 1880 Train, Bear Country, Reptile Gardens, caves, museums, and many other area attractions.

Enjoy beautiful mountain and meadow views. Wildlife abounds on our ten acre property. Frequent guests include deer, song birds, turkeys, hawks, and chipmunks. Occasionally bald eagles, elk, coyotes, owls, marmots, and fox also visit the property. Yak Ridge is located at an elevation of 5,000 feet providing for cool evenings and star studded skies.

We acquired the property in 2014 and named it Yak Ridge in honor of our small yak herd and for the hillside's resemblance to the ridge on the back of a yak. The farmstead is home to honey bees, chickens, and even a small herd of Himalayan yaks.

Yak Ridge is located on the west central edge of Eagle Mountain Ranch established by early settlers. Eagle Mountain, elevation 5,267 is located to the east of Yak Ridge and recognizable by its rock outcrop peak. Bald Eagles have historically nested in the area and are often seen soaring the skies.

During Prohibition, our corner of the Ranch was known as Whiskey Gulch. Remnants of old bootlegger roads and the spring that cooled the whiskey still can be found on Forest Service property adjacent to Yak Ridge.

Looking for additional space? Yak Ridge also offer another 2-bedroom cabin, which sleeps up to 6, and a studio cabin which sleeps up to 4 and allows Yak Ridge to accommodate a total of 16 guests. Visit properties 713096 and 741538 for details.

Hospitality to the max!

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent stay at Yak Ridge. The location was central to the sights and close to most everything we wanted to see. The cabin was clean and updated and very welcoming. Julie, our host, had thought of everything- there was a picnic basket with complimentary s'mores fixings, farm fresh eggs and fruit waiting for us. Outside we had our own fire pit and grill, and the cabin was secluded enough that my kids could safely ride bikes and explore the hills right outside. Firewood was available to purchase and she had the lighter and starter in the cabin for us. Anything we could have needed in the kitchen was there and was clean. Cleanup was easy, not a huge long checklist like we've had at other cabins. Keyless entry was also extremely convenient. We felt very well taken care of. I highly recommend staying here, we will definitely be back.

Winter Wonderland

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Yak-Ridge Cabins. While we were there during the off season, in March, 2018, there was still plenty to see and do. First, the cabins are only 5 minutes from Mount Rushmore and all other attractions are within an a short drive (one hour or less). Second, the cabins were clean and comfortable, with all essentials for a family, including, extra heaters since we were from Florida. The property was covered in snow and did not disappoint in its beautiful landscape. It was like staying in a Winter Wonderland! Thank you Julie! I hope next time we have more time so we can tour the farmstead.

This is a magical place!

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently stayed at this amazing cabin retreat over the New Year. We rented two of the cabins. The cabins are very cozy, well stocked, and comfortable. The location is ideal for visiting everything in the Black Hills. It is an easy drive to Mount Rushmore and all the attractions. We were able to tour the Homestead of the owners which houses Yaks, Honey Bees, and Chickens. Everything was sparkling clean and well run. We would stay here again. Julie is a great hostess and we enjoyed a welcome bowl of fresh eggs, cheese, coffee, and fruit. The cabinets in the family room were stocked with games, books, and DVD's. The owners have gone above and beyond to accommodate their guests.

Great cabins in the Black Hills

  • 5 of 5

Yak Ridge cabins have all the amenities while maintaining a rustic feel. Even though the cabins are close to Rapid City, the property is very secluded so it still feels remote. The owners are also very friendly and accommodating.
