About the property

2 bedroom, sleeps 6, rustic charm, amenities, cozy, clean, 10 acres, wildlife

Yak Ridge cabins were newly completed in Fall 2015. Our deluxe cabins are nestled in the heart of the Black Hills and offer rustic charm as well as modern amenities. Cabin #1 offers a 2-Bedroom design with a full kitchen and bath and a covered porch. The cabins sleeps up to 6 guests (bedroom #1 queen bed, bedroom #2 two twins, and living/dining with a queen sofa sleeper). If cabin #1 is already booked for your travel dates, please check out cabin #3 (vrbo property - 741538) it is virtually identical to cabin #1)

Our cabins feature the work of local craftsmen and artisans. Many local and sustainable materials were used in the construction of the cabins. Vintage decor and quality furnishings provide rustic charm and comfortable surroundings for your stay in the Black Hills.

Centrally located in the Black Hills just 3/4 mile from Highway 16 we offer the best of both worlds – easy access as well as peace and tranquility. Yak Ridge is only a short drive from Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Sheridan Lake, Pactola Reservoir, Mickelson Trail, 1880 Train, Bear Country, Reptile Gardens, caves, museums, and many other area attractions.

Enjoy beautiful mountain and meadow views. Wildlife abounds on our ten acre property. Frequent guests include deer, song birds, turkeys, hawks, and chipmunks. Occasionally bald eagles, elk, coyotes, owls, marmots, and fox also visit the property. Yak Ridge is located at an elevation of 5,000 feet providing for cool evenings and star studded skies.

We acquired the property in 2014 and named it Yak Ridge in honor of our small yak herd and for the hillside's resemblance to the ridge on the back of a yak. The farmstead is home to honey bees, chickens, and even a small herd of Himalayan yaks.

Yak Ridge is located on the west central edge of Eagle Mountain Ranch established by early settlers. Eagle Mountain, elevation 5,267 is located to the east of Yak Ridge and recognizable by its rock outcrop peak. Bald Eagles have historically nested in the area and are often seen soaring the skies.

During Prohibition, our corner of the Ranch was known as Whiskey Gulch. Remnants of old bootlegger roads and the spring that cooled the whiskey still can be found on Forest Service property adjacent to Yak Ridge.

Looking for additional space? Yak Ridge also offer another 2-bedroom cabin, which sleeps up to 6, and a studio cabin which sleeps up to 4 and allows Yak Ridge to accommodate a total of 16 guests. Visit properties 713096 and 741538 for details.

A magical getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spontaneously decided to take a few days during spring break to visit the Black Hills. Cabin 1 at Yak Ridge was the perfect location for our first visit! The cabin was thoughtfully laid out - with two bedrooms, a full bath, fully equipped kitchen, and living/dining room area - and was beautifully appointed. Julie has decorated in a way that make the cabin feel both rustic and cozy and elegant with special touches such as stained glass light fixtures and lovely wood furniture and countertops. The cabin had everything we needed from the welcome basket of eggs, coffee, cheese, and fruit to dishware, condiments, coffee maker, blankets, games, movies, books, guides to the surrounding area, etc. We felt we were alone in the woods and enjoyed the magical quiet and peace of a snow day when it snowed 8-12 inches. We sled, hiked, watched movies, played games, and made smores in the fire pit. At the same time it feels remote, the cabin is perfectly centrally located - only about 4 miles from Mt. Rushmore, and very close to other attractions in the area such as the Cosmos Mystery area (across the street), Bear Country USA, Reptile Gardens, etc. and Hill City, Rapid City, and Keystone are all very accessible. We enjoyed the sites and cannot wait to visit the cabins at Yak Ridge again. Julie and Jim took great care of us! I cannot recommend this place enough.

Fantastic little cabin in the mountains!!

  • 5 of 5

By far THE BEST cabin rental in the Black Hills and that is no exaggeration! From the picturesque setting atop Yak Ridge to the quaint accommodations and the welcoming hospitality by Julie and her family, you won’t find a better home away from home for your next trip to SD. The cabin was perfectly appointed with everything you would need, just bring your own food and sit back and enjoy it. So comfortable and perfectly sized to give you that cozy cabin feel with plenty of elbow room for the family. The private fire pit was a great amenity to stoke up a campfire for those cool mountain nights and the covered patio was the perfect setting for your morning coffee as you listen to the roosters crow and welcome in the new day. Farm fresh eggs, locally made cheese and fresh ground coffee were here to greet us upon arrival showing us just how much Julie and her family put into making us feel welcome. Nestled in the mountains just outside Keystone, it’s the perfect spot to take in all the attractions that the Black Hills has to offer. Just minutes from Mt. Rushmore, Bear County, Sylvan Lake, Custer and Crazy Horse Memorial to name only a few. Don’t waste your time booking a cabin anywhere else....this is the place to be! I would not hesitate to recommend this to ANYONE looking for that perfect mountain experience in the Black Hills! Don’t wait to schedule your next trip to Yak Ridge!!!

Cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

We love our stay in the cabin. It has everything you need for a home away from home. My daughter loves to drink her hot cocoa every morning in the outdoor dining area and listen to cockadoodle doo's of hens/chickens . It's very close to Mt Rushmore and Rapid City is 30 minutes drive away. Cosmos Mystery area is walking distance with $2 discount coupon we found by the fridge door. Thank you Julie for the surprise welcome treats ! We will be back.

Great little cabin with all the amenities

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 nights recently on a trip to see Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse and really enjoyed our stay. The cabin is a short 10 minute drive to Rushmore, 5 minutes to Keystone and really centrally located. What we enjoyed them most was after all the hustle and bustle of sightseeing and tourists we were able to "escape" to our cabin in the woods for some peace and quiet and relaxation. Sitting out on the front porch after dark with a full moon, cool breeze and a beverage was a little slice of heaven. Would definitely go back!

Fantastic cabin in perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic and inviting cabin tucked into the Black Hills. Central location, easy drive to many attractions. The kitchen was equipped with all basic necessities and more! My family enjoyed the board games, bonfire and climbing in the hills behind the cabin after our days adventures😊. Krulls grocery store in Hills City had everything we needed and was within 10-15 minutes from the cabin. We were pleasantly surprised with the fresh eggs, fruit and mints when we arrived. Only down side was my kids didn’t like the firmness of the twin beds in the second bedroom☹️. Main bedroom and pull out couch were very comfy😊. Highly recommend cabin for family vacations and getaways!

The perfect place exactly as described if not better.

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend this place. The ...everything was great. Our kids, 10, 12, 14, played for hours on end on the rock hill/mountain behind our cabin. Location is close to the activities in Keystone yet remote enough to disconnect and relax. By far a great choice to go. Thanks for sharing your home/space with us.
