Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cabin in Willow - Long Lake R&R

Lakefront cabin w/bath, 2 bedrooms, large deck.

Long Lake R & R

Available after Labor Day and before May 1 by special request only. Iditarod weekend available. See Rates page.

Lakefront cabin provides rest and relaxation. Enjoy the water from the decks, dock, paddleboat, canoe, and rowboat, or bring your own toys. Original polished plywood floors mean you don’t have to take your shoes off inside. Upstairs sitting room offers a wide view of the lake. Two bedrooms sleep six with one queen and two sets of bunk beds. Cozy kitchen boasts original cupboards and contemporary island bar. Wood stove and radiant heat keep you warm in the winter.

Kitchen features all the amenities to prepare your own meals, full size refrigerator, microwave, small stove and oven, good quality cooking utensils and dining ware.

Bath is a new addition to the cabin and is large with 36x48 shower.

Eastern and southern decks give you the best morning and afternoon sun.

There are relaxing chairs, quaint drink and snack tables, and a propane grill on the main deck.

The bath includes toilet, sink, extra-large shower, vanity mirror and plenty of room. In floor radiant heat keeps the chill off in the winter and a sunny window allows breeze in the summer. Towels, shampoo and conditioner, and hand soap are provided.

Kitchen is L shaped with a separate island at counter height and an attached fold up ledge that seats two at table height. Kitchen features new propane stove (20"), refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, tea kettle, plenty of utensils including instant read thermometer and plenty of preparation bowls if you like to prepare elegant meals. Pots and pans, cutting boards, knives and serving utensils will keep you well equipped to enjoy cooking while not losing sight of the lake.

The domestic water is potable but softened. As some people are on a low salt diet and softened water has a slightly increased sodium content, we make Matsu-Water available in a handy container on the counter for drinking. It's great!

The master bedroom has a queen bed, closet, two bedside lamps and tables and a western facing window. The 2nd bedroom has two twin beds plus closet and window with a great lake view. The upstairs sitting room has a bunk bed that sleeps two. All beds feature matching duvets. Plenty of extra linens are in the closets should you need them.

The upstairs sitting room has a TV, DVD player, love seat, easy chair, cool Alaska Willow hand built chair, lamps, and the best indoor lake view. You will enjoy the sitting room any time of the day for games, reading, or simply looking out the window.

The living room on the main floor is large enough to seat your entire party for relaxing in front of the fire with your morning coffee or evening beverage. Great lake view, too. A large couch, rocking chair, easy chair, lamps and tables still provide plenty of moving around room in this main cabin area.

Dining is at the 6-place Maple table with matching chairs at the window looking over the deck and lake. Make the table any size you wish to seat from 1-6.

On the lake is an L-shaped dock with plenty of room for swimming, water skiing, or boating. On the lake shore are two older docks converted to sitting areas to watch the lake life. Please wear a life jacket around the water.

The entry way off Michigan St. is a narrow, private drive that opens into a larger circular drive with lots of parking space. There is no boat or winter toy launch from the property. We keep it that way to allow the blueberries and other vegetation to grow along the lake. You may, however, launch from Sides Drive across the lake and a few "blocks" north, then tie up or park on the lake in front of the cabin.

The deck is 12x40 plus a wrap-around to the south. Great morning and afternoon sun (or shade) along the entire deck and late afternoon/evening sun on the southern portion. A wide stairway leads from the deck to the lake level, or there is a driveway leading right to, but not onto the lake.

About Bob Congdon

Bob was born and raised in Alaska and Joani has been here since 1973. We've owned the cabin for over 30 years and have done some upgrades this past year to make it more comfortable for guests. We live in Anchorage but frequently visit the cabin and are only a phone call away.

Bob Congdon purchased this cabin in 1984

Why Bob Congdon chose Alaska

You will like this lakefront retreat for the variety of uses and its closeness to great adventure in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The lake is open to all water sports and can range from active families enjoying summer and winter sports to one of the quietest, most restful places. The wood stove and radiant heat keep it warm in the winter and many windows allow good summer cooling.

If you like to prepare nice meals, we've incorporated good quality food preparation equipment in the kitchen. If you like to eat out, there is a deli, local fast food, and a decent restaurant all within 5 miles.

The bath will meet your needs in a colorful, clean, large room with extra large shower.

We like this area because it's close enough to Anchorage to get there in about 1.5 hours, yet far enough away that peace and quiet abound, particularly during the midweek or weekend mornings.

What makes this cabin unique

We particularly like the large deck, upstairs sitting room, and lake front for anything from morning coffee to tubing, depending on weather and what we feel like doing. That's the magic of this place. Games and puzzles on the dining room table in front of a fire, watching the Iditarod Race, rowing or canoeing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing: you name it. They're all right here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful house. We really enjoyed our stay here, and it was close to everything we wanted to do while we were here. The boys enjoyed fishing, and we were lucky enough to see Denali without cloud cover.

What a treat! Thanks for everything

Cool house with great access to Long Lake. Having use of the boats was great for our boys, and we enjoyed watching planes land on the lake. Thanks!

Nice little lake cabin

  • 5 of 5

I stayed there with my son and a friend, going hiking with Denali state park an hour to the North and some places near Palmer an hour to the East. The cabin was a great home base. Boating on the lake, relaxing around the fire, and watching the sun rise over the lake were good fun. Lot's of folks on the lake seem to own their own airplanes, with an airstrip and water planes coming and going once in a while. Although no fan of traffic in general, these small planes were interesting and only flew during the day. The owner, Bob, was very helpful. We felt welcome on arriving and glad we had gotten to stay here upon leaving.

Visitors will enjoy one of South-central Alaska's best views of Mt. Denali from the road into the cabin or from the lake in front of the cabin.

Bring your own gear for cycling, 4-wheeling, jet-skiing, boating, tubing, water skiing, paddle boarding, fishing and walking right from the cabin, or hiking and exploring old mines in nearby Hatcher Pass. Easy launch for summer boats just across and up the lake off Sides Drive.

Eagle Quest Restaurant and Lodge is a few minutes away near Deshka Landing with good food and outstanding cinnamon rolls, or try Sheep Creek Lodge 20 miles north on the Parks Highway. Pizza, deli-food and a two small grocery stores plus a well equipped, quaint hardware store are available on the Parks Highway near mile 69.

The world famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race starts just North on Willow Lake and every team passes right in front of the cabin. Keep track of your favorite mushers from the comfort of the warm cabin or join the crowd right out on the frozen lake to cheer them on. Some years one can walk right up to the trail on packed snow. Other years one might need skiis, snowshoes, or a motorized snow vehicle. Many folks set up grills, tents, shelters, coolers and other comforts next to the trail for an afternoon of fun. Dress warmly!

Some of the world's best salmon and other fishing is within 10 miles along the Parks Highway, at the Deshka River, along the Susitna River, or among the many lakes and streams in the Susitna Valley or Matanuska Valley. Pike fishing is available from the cabin dock or rowboat or canoe. Great way to spend an early morning or late evening.

For those who wish to fly in, a float-plane can tie to the dock, or land your wheel plane at Willow.

Willow has a farmers's market on Fridays, 2-7 pm from July through August. Check it out to stock up on local produce and gift items for your weekend.

Talkeetna is just 45 minutes north. There you can take a flight-seeing trip to Mt. Denali or charter a river-boat for fishing and sightseeing. On Willow Lake, just a few minutes away, charter a fly-in fishing trip to any of the remote lakes or streams. These are quite popular day trips.

Wasilla is 40 minutes to the south. Most visitors will pass through it on the way to Long Lake R&R. There, many big box stores, restaurants, vehicle repair and every other amenity a traveler needs are always available. We like to stop at Three Bears grocery about 10 minutes north of Wasilla. This smaller store has everything from excellent meats to fresh vegetables, lots of hardware, fishing equipment, hunting supplies, a liquor store, deli, and excellent prices. It's kind of like a small Costco with more variety.

Contact the owner at any time during your stay at Long Lake R&R to talk about what to see, where to go, or any questions you may have to further your enjoyment of this fun and relaxing lakeside cabin.
