About Jan Burdick

The owners of this property are 18 cousins who inherited the cottage from their Aunt Esther, who thoughtfully wanted to make the cottage accessible for all of us, most of whom have fond memories of playing at the beach and visiting Aunt Esther as children and young adults. We are scattered all across the country but some of us make it back to stay in the cottage regularly, soaking up the memories and the beach.

What makes this cottage unique

Where else do you get a private beach, a sweet cottage in a neighborhood filled with generations of a family who have been on "the Lane" for 6 generations? You are never a stranger here!

House very clean and temperature comfortable

  • 3 of 5

Disappointed that beach was dirty with seaweed and you could not use it, not a place to swim. The house was very clean, window air conditioners in place but not needed, Owner very helpful and went out of her way for us. It was suggested to use bottled water, due to water coming from well, no big deal,, Nice quiet location, neighbors very nice

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to review our property. We are sorry the beach was not at its best while you were here. After fifty-plus years of visiting the cottage, we know how disappointing it can be at those times when the beach seems unusable. Unfortunately, wind direction, water temperature, storms and who-knows-what-else can affect the amount of seaweed on the beach. We have seen it be seaweedy one day and then, literally overnight, it clears up and is beautifully clean and clear. Usually, clearer spots can be found a short walk down the beach or at the state beach on the other side of the wall. We will be sure to show future guests the best way to access that beach.

A Perfect, Peaceful Place

  • 5 of 5

We loved spending our Labor Day weekend at this historic, restored cottage with its private beach access. Reading about the history of the cottage in the special binder on the book shelf gave us such an appreciation of the care and love that the cottage has had for multiple generations.

Jan met as when we arrived and led us down the delightful, tree-lined, short walk to the private beach, which is a hidden gem along the shoreline. Walking along it, early in the morning or late in the evening, was a highlight of our time at the cottage.

The cottage itself was very clean, and the beds were comfortable. There were two window air conditioners, and a whole-house attic fan that cooled the house very well. The kitchen was stocked with items not usually found in a rental place, such as paper picnic supplies, plastic wrap, tinfoil, left-over containers etc. There were plenty of dishes and pans to make and bake any meal desired. There even was a huge bin of large beach towels to use, along with beach chairs and umbrella.

We discovered that the neighbors were all very friendly and helpful since most of them are relatives of the owner. The whole area has been in the family for many years, and now the 3rd and 4th generations are enjoying the land and sea of their great grandparents.

We definitely hope to travel back to this oasis from our Chicago-area home. Maybe next time we will even visit the nearby towns instead of just enjoying the lazy, peaceful days at the cottage with its beach!

Charming cottage on a private beach. Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent 6 magical weeks chasing butterflies, collecting sea glass, and strolling for hours along the private beaches surrounding this cottage and neighboring Harkness State Park. Jan, who manages the family owned property, met us on our first day and provided great information about the area and local attractions. She was always readily available by email or phone if needed. Jan's great. The cottage was as described, clean, comfortable, and updated. It was fully stocked with crisp linens, soft pillows, towels, games, and beach umbrellas. Waterford and Niantic amenities are only a 5 minute drive away. But what makes this property rare is its location. The beach is an easy 100 meter (or less) walk down a private lane, the last 50 meters canopied by trees. My young children roamed safely to the beach and to both State Parks bordering the property. Butterflies and bunnies abound! It was very special to have access to a pristine and large private beach with a State Park situated at each end. My boys fished, crabbed, climbed, and saw their first shooting stars. I don't think there's anything else like it along the CT coast. We live in NYC and appreciate the secluded and natural splendor offered here. This cottage is truly very special and we have already booked our dates for next summer!

Thank you, Jan!

Wonderful Special Place

  • 5 of 5

This little gem of a place has the familiar warm energy of home and the privacy of a small community on a private road only a short stroll to a beautiful private beach.

The owner was very responsive with any questions we had. The surroundings are peaceful and quite. Since the cottage is on a private road, there is no traffic except for neighbors.

The cottage is spacious (1 bed on the ground floor, another 2 beds on the second floor) and has all the kitchen appliances you need if you want to cook in, but there are many great restaurants very close.

The location is great, with other beaches and things to do and see, all within a short drive. We already reserved to come back again!

The beach is the most compelling recreation for us. Some of our other favorite places are more than 15 minutes away so couldn't list them above.

Mystic Seaport and Aquarium are 30 minutes away. There is a unique used book store in Niantic (15 minutes) called the Book Barn that we highly recommend.

There are fantastic restaurants, boating options, sports, a casino and much more within 15 - 30 minutes.
