About Jan Burdick
The owners of this property are 18 cousins who inherited the cottage from their Aunt Esther, who thoughtfully wanted to make the cottage accessible for all of us, most of whom have fond memories of playing at the beach and visiting Aunt Esther as children and young adults. We are scattered all across the country but some of us make it back to stay in the cottage regularly, soaking up the memories and the beach.
What makes this Cottage unique

This cottage had everything my family needed. We enjoyed the beach access and quiet location. Owner and family were very helpful.
Charming Little Cottage
We spent a month at this cottage and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is very quiet and the folks living around the cottage were so nice to us we felt at home. It is only about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The walk is scenic in and of itself. We worried that due to such an long stay our accommodations would seem cramped but it wasn't. The cottage is fully equipped and the hosts have thought of everything a family might need for a stay. We look forward to more visits.
And we look forward to having you back, Paul. You were stellar renters! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
Loved the cottage and the area. We will stay there again.
Thanks, Tammy. We were happy to have you and your family. We would love to have you back!
House very clean and temperature comfortable
Disappointed that beach was dirty with seaweed and you could not use it, not a place to swim. The house was very clean, window air conditioners in place but not needed, Owner very helpful and went out of her way for us. It was suggested to use bottled water, due to water coming from well, no big deal,, Nice quiet location, neighbors very nice
Thanks for taking the time to review our property. We are sorry the beach was not at its best while you were here. After fifty-plus years of visiting the cottage, we know how disappointing it can be at those times when the beach seems unusable. Unfortunately, wind direction, water temperature, storms and who-knows-what-else can affect the amount of seaweed on the beach. We have seen it be seaweedy one day and then, literally overnight, it clears up and is beautifully clean and clear.
Usually, clearer spots can be found a short walk down the beach or at the state beach on the other side of the wall. We will be sure to show future guests the best way to access that beach.
A nice quiet place!
We enjoyed the little cosy house and the quiet vicinity very much
A Perfect, Peaceful Place
We loved spending our Labor Day weekend at this historic, restored cottage with its private beach access. Reading about the history of the cottage in the special binder on the book shelf gave us such an appreciation of the care and love that the cottage has had for multiple generations.
Jan met as when we arrived and led us down the delightful, tree-lined, short walk to the private beach, which is a hidden gem along the shoreline. Walking along it, early in the morning or late in the evening, was a highlight of our time at the cottage.
The cottage itself was very clean, and the beds were comfortable. There were two window air conditioners, and a whole-house attic fan that cooled the house very well. The kitchen was stocked with items not usually found in a rental place, such as paper picnic supplies, plastic wrap, tinfoil, left-over containers etc. There were plenty of dishes and pans to make and bake any meal desired. There even was a huge bin of large beach towels to use, along with beach chairs and umbrella.
We discovered that the neighbors were all very friendly and helpful since most of them are relatives of the owner. The whole area has been in the family for many years, and now the 3rd and 4th generations are enjoying the land and sea of their great grandparents.
We definitely hope to travel back to this oasis from our Chicago-area home. Maybe next time we will even visit the nearby towns instead of just enjoying the lazy, peaceful days at the cottage with its beach!
The beach is the most compelling recreation for us. Some of our other favorite places are more than 15 minutes away so couldn't list them above.
Mystic Seaport and Aquarium are 30 minutes away. There is a unique used book store in Niantic (15 minutes) called the Book Barn that we highly recommend.
There are fantastic restaurants, boating options, sports, a casino and much more within 15 - 30 minutes.
