We have lived in Mill Valley for over 15 years because of the charming downtown, wonderful access to trails, beautiful redwoods and proximity to San Francisco.
Grace Hawthorne purchased this cottage in 2014
Helens Ln. is the closest walk to downtown with the priceless view of Mt. Tam. This guest house will be like your home away from home because of the spaciousness and the full size kitchen. Newly furnished with modern furnishings and amenities.
A five minute walk or a two minute drive downtown will put you in a sea of culinary delights-- award winning restaurants, gourmet grocery store, excellent coffee and what we call nature's cathedral-- running streams, giant redwoods, chirping birds.
We spent 4 nights here and we were pleased with the cleanliness and ease of access to San Francisco to visit our son. The property offers state of the art appliances and overall offers a very nice place to stay. Be prepared to enter through the bedroom where there is a half bath, and showering upstairs where the kitchen and living quarters are located. Despite the unusual room arrangement the property is great. Owner was great.
The views from the cottage are extraordinary. The sun streaming in skylights, windows and views from multiple angles gives it a bright and cozy feel. It's in a great location, easy access to hiking trails, downtown and the city. The space was clean, quiet and peaceful. I highly recommend it!
28 Helens Lane is a fantastic little spot. Quiet yet close to downtown Mill Valley, great location for SF, wine country or the coast. The place itself is clean, tastefully furnished, and has lots of natural light and lovely views. Would use it again in a heartbeat.
Well stocked kitchen, nice towels and linens, comfortable place.
My wife and I stayed here with our 2 year old son on a family trip. It was our first time staying in a VRBO, so we weren't quite sure what to expect. Grace was always very responsive from the beginning to the end, answering all of my questions. The unit is in a convenient spot if you want to be away from the big city at night, but still just a short drive or ferry ride away for a day trip. It's also very close to the coastal and open space areas if you want to get out and enjoy those aspects of the area. I brought my bike with me and Grace was very accommodating with allowing me to keep it locked up in the unit while we were away during the day.
For us, I felt the walkability was not great. The unit is located up a pretty steep hill with very narrow windy roads, so we did not want to risk walking the short distance down into town. This was especially true having the young one with a stroller, but even without it I don't think we would have walked anywhere.
Now for the unit itself. It was a very nice place to stay for a week, and the privacy was excellent. There were a few small issues here and there that were not as perfect as the pictures make it look, but by no means was it a dump. One example was a plastic part with a spring under it on the kitchen faucet that popped off a few times over the course of the week that very nearly ended up in the garbage disposal a few times. For another example, we also had some issues with the keypad on the door. It worked perfectly the vast majority of the time, but it did give us a little trouble on a few occasions. We never ended up locked out, but we did have to fumble with it for a few minutes to get in a couple of times. Neither of these was a huge issue, and we notified Grace about them, so hopefully they will get taken care of.
Being a two story unit, we were a little leery about how safe it would be for our two year old. It turned out to be a non-issue for us, as we just positioned his pack-n-play to block off the staircase so he couldn't play around on them. There also were not a lot of opportunities otherwise in the unit for him to get himself into trouble in terms of fragile items or the like. I would say it's a pretty kid friendly place overall.
Bottom line, I would not hesitate to book this unit again for a future trip. It was clean, comfortable, convenient, and Grace was very professional and accomodating. Better walkability to town would've probably given it the extra star for me.
Since we were visiting family, I wish we could have have spent time relaxing in the living room over-looking Mt. Tam. Grace had a very informative notebook outlining all the operating details of the house and sight-seeing and restaurant options in the Mill Valley area. We visit twice a year and are looking forward to another stay.
