About Sandra and John

We are from Louisiana and landed in Portland about 5 years ago. I am a voice over artist, actor & real estate investor. John is a former Naval Special Warfare Boat Team operator and is a real estate investor. We love finding diamonds in the rough and restoring them together. We also have a little 4 pound Yorkie named Emma whose nickname is "Nimmers" hence the name Nimmer Nest! She can often be seen sitting in the living room window watching squirrels and birds!

Sandra and John purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Sandra and John chose Portland

This area of Portland is nice and quiet but still close to everything. We love the Reedwood neighborhood because of the cool Mid-century architecture, wide streets & relative lack of power lines that contribute to the "country living in the city" feel as this area was described when being built in the 1950's. We moved from an 1895 home in a busier, noisier neighborhood to quiet Reedwood but is still in the heart of Southeast Portland. This home already had a complete separate apartment that is perfect for visitors wanting to stay in Portland but desire more space and amenities than a typical hotel room such as a full kitchen, patio, yard, and a vintage pinball machine!

What makes this apartment unique

Your own private separate entrance, full kitchen, covered patio with grill and use of backyard. Gas fireplace in living room and electric fireplace in bedroom. DirecTV with over 250 channels with on-demand so you don't miss any of your shows while traveling. DVD player and TV in both the bedroom and living room with DVD Library. The house features both central heat and air conditioning!! Rare for Portland :)

Lovely quiet neighborhood!

  • 4 of 5

Sweet place. Very clean. It is a basement apartment and to us it was a bit dark and damp, but then it is Portland! The space was quite roomy for 3 of us. No problems at all and a good price.

Owner's Response: Hey guys, Thanks again for choosing to stay with us and we hope you do so again. We've never heard our apartment described as "a bit dark and damp" from our guests so that's a bit surprising to us with all the windows and glass French doors. Also, the weather here is a bit different than New Mexico. It's important to note that the apartment is not a basement or a refinished basement. It's the first floor of our split level home and was completed along with the rest of the house. A portion of the living room square footage is below ground but the vast majority is at ground level including the entrance, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Thanks, John and Sandi

As advertised.. plus..

  • 5 of 5

This property was an absolute delight. In a great area and really quiet. Bus stop is close by if you want to hit downtown Portland for restaurants and nightlife. There are some neighborhood eateries within walking distance so it's easy to just take a nice stroll through the area to go to brunch/dinner. Trader Joe's also close by if you want to stock up on groceries.

The owners, John and Sandy, were helpful with any questions I had and yet, unintrusive. It was super clean with plenty of towels and linens.. lovely kitchen with all you'd need..great coffee .. thanks, J & S , for a wonderful week.

I will definitely book again on my next visit.

Very Nice

John and Sandra have thought of everything in this nice apt in Portland. The welcome bottle of wine and assorted snacks were a nice touch after a long flight from the east coast.

Amazing place but leave the pinball machine off if you value your sanity

  • 5 of 5

Never before have I started writing the review for a rental before the rental experience wasn’t even half over. Never before have I been so thoroughly traumatized by experiences suffered dwelling within a VRBO rental.

The Gottlieb “Dimension” pinball machine is a classic game from 1971. It features prominently in the living room/dining area of this basement rental. A spacious man cave on steroids, to augment metaphorical stereotypes, in a lovely little neighborhood that’s within walking distance of endless Portland attractions and entertainment. The weather was idyllic, the bed soft and cozy, the shower water piping hot.

This bleeping flashing machine will bewitch and consume all your vacation time. It will break your heart, again and again with the liping out and going down that left sided red alley and take your 5 balls and leave you well short of the high score of 84,000.

This machine makes is obvious why the Fonz in Happy Days would hit that jukebox. It wasn’t to get a free song! It wasn’t to be “cool”! It was hatred for the electronics of the 70s. Electronics from the 70s were a thing of evil that most of us assumed were all safely rotting in a landfill somewhere. Harmlessly leaching heavy metals and poisons into the aquifers. But no! Alas, some of these demonic electronics still function to this very day!

Remember when Tom Hanks got made into a full grown man in the movie “Big”? Remember how it was weird how he then had sex with that adult woman? Well this pinball machine is another level of devious! That fortune telling thing was nothing compared to the raw deviltry contained, nay trapped, inside this ancient cabinet.

I don’t know if I can sleep here another night with this machine in the next room. Calling to me seductively.

A goading sign on it reads

“Only playable from 8am to 10pm”.

But even when the power to this monster is safely off, the bells still ding in my fractured mind; the lights still flash in my darkened soul.

But seriously, if you need to get the demons out, there’s a pinball bar 5 minutes walking distance from this place called the C-Bar. They have all the friendly modern pinball machines in a secure room. They all cost 50 cents per play, not like the 10 cent fee for the demonic Dimension machine waiting for you in the rental for when you stumble home.

Seriously folks, Portland in Spring, if it weren't for digital cameras, I'd have a 10,000 film developing bill. I mean DAMN!

Owner's Response: Despite the evil pinball machine, it sounds like you guys really enjoyed your stay in our apartment and Portland as well. Spring is a great time here with the arrival of warmer weather and everything in bloom. C-Bar is a great place and some of the best food to be had with the added benefit of it being a short walk from our place Now about that Dimension pinball machine. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it and it looks like the 3 changeable game difficulty parameters are set at about where they should be. Yes, the game can be made to be even more challenging. Out of the couple dozen pinballs I've owned, it'll be the one that stays in my collection. It's my favorite and is on the wish list of many a pinhead because it epitomizes great pinball. I haven't opened up the machine yet but it seems I owe you some dimes since it's actually set on free play. It will also start by inserting coins so I suppose I need to place sign on it stating that it's free to play. Come back and stay with us and if you're staying elsewhere, feel free to drop by, have a drink, get your Dimension fix, and play the other pinball machines on the main level of the house. Alright, time to go play some pinball and get humiliated. Hope to see you guys again. Best, John and Sandi

Cute and casual

Great stay! A bit too far from anything happening but a cheap uber ride fixes that.

Owner's Response: Thanks Lauren for staying with us and for the review. We think our location is just about perfect. The distance from us to the busy, "happening" areas keeps things quiet and relaxing here plus our guests always have a space to park. Yet we're only a 5 minute or so walk from 6 restaurants and three bars and a 5 minute drive/uber to more popular nightclubs/hotspot areas (Division, Hawthorne, Woodstock). Also, the number 17 bus stop is one block away that takes you into the heart of downtown, the Moda center, etc. Thanks again and we hope you had a safe drive home! John and Sandi
