About Sandra and John

We are from Louisiana and landed in Portland about 5 years ago. I am a voice over artist, actor & real estate investor. John is a former Naval Special Warfare Boat Team operator and is a real estate investor. We love finding diamonds in the rough and restoring them together. We also have a little 4 pound Yorkie named Emma whose nickname is "Nimmers" hence the name Nimmer Nest! She can often be seen sitting in the living room window watching squirrels and birds!

Sandra and John purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Sandra and John chose Portland

This area of Portland is nice and quiet but still close to everything. We love the Reedwood neighborhood because of the cool Mid century architecture, wide streets & relative lack of power lines that contribute to the "country living in the city" feel as this area was described when being built in the 1950's. We moved from an 1895 home in a busier, noisier Southeast neighborhood to quiet Reedwood but is still in the heart of Southeast Portland. Our home already had a complete separate apartment that is perfect for visitors wanting to stay in Portland but desire more space and amenities than a typical hotel room such as a full kitchen, patio, yard, and of course, a pinball machine.

What makes this apartment unique

Your own private separate entrance, full kitchen, covered patio with grill and use of backyard. Gas fireplace in living room and electric fireplace in bedroom. DirecTV with over 250 channels with on-demand so you don't miss any of your shows while traveling. DVD player and TV in both the bedroom and living room with DVD Library. The house features Central Heat and Air Conditioning!! Rare for Portland :)

Perfect spot for our family (with our dog too!)

  • 5 of 5

My family loved our stay here! My husband and I brought our 2.5 year old son and our pup and the lower level of John and Sandi's house was perfect for us! They accommodated a very last minute reservation on our part and we arrived to a clean place. John welcomed us when we got there and walked us through a few things about the place. We were pleasantly surprised of how quiet it was being on the lower level, which was necessary for our napping kiddo! The pinball machine and available games were a hit for the whole fam. The kitchen was well stocked (including the bottle of wine and snacks/treats John and Sandi left for us and even for our dog!). It was a tad chilly when we arrived, but with a flick of a switch on the gas fireplace (one in the bedroom and one in the main living area), we were toasty in no time. Neighborhood was quiet and really had a nice feeling to it. We walked just 5-10 minutes to get to some great spots to eat. We will definitely be back!

Great! Perfect location. Nice Neighborhood. Wonderful accomodations.

  • 5 of 5

Sandi and John are exceptional and considerate hosts. More than once they helped me in with groceries, touched base to make sure all was good, and included me in their street sledding during the "Big Snow" They welcomed me with bottled, chilled water, coffee, a bottle of wine, and a great store of maps, visitor info, recommendations, and helpful hints. My German Shepherd was thrilled with his fancy water and food bowls and Emma's perky salute. The neighborhood has a park, Starbuck's, Trader Joe's within walking distance. In a 5 minute drive I could be at the Mt. Scott Community Center to swim or take a yoga class. The Woodstock Park around the corner has an off-leash dog park with friendly people and dogs. And just a bit farther in various directions was a massive Cineplex, shopping galore, little boutiques and bakeries, and even a pet store where we had some puppy obedience classes and play time. I felt safe taking my dog for a walk throughout the neighborhood and over to Creston-Kenilworth Park.

During the big snow the fireplace was so nice as the temperatures dropped into the 20's. The kitchen has all necessary devices and dishes to function effeciently. I was even able to make my traditional Christmas cookies with the extra cookie sheets John brought down. The bedroom is quiet, so comfortable, and darkened with drapes that sleeping in is very easy. The bathroom was stocked with some wonderful local soaps, white, fluffy towels, and loads of hot water. The Nemmer Nest was the hit of the day when my nephews came over and battled each other on the vintage pinball machine. I was never able to move beyond a five digit score. This was a fabulous stay, and I would not hesitate to reserve time again with this gracious couple in their lovely home. Thank you for the hospitality. Nancy

Lovely neighborhood, perfect location for visiting our son on SE Holgate Blvd.

  • 5 of 5

Accommodations were just right for me, my wife and our young adult daughter. What a pleasant surprise to have a complementary bottle of wine and local coffee waiting for us. The apartment has a fireplace insert that adds warm cozy heat for a homey feel. John and Sandra are excellent hosts, very helpful, friendly and unobtrusive. The location was only two blocks from our sons house and easy walking distance to local restaurants and Trader Joe's. Would definitely plan on staying at Nimmer's Nest on our next visit to Portland (if only to work on my pinball game)

Owner's Response: You guys were great and are welcome back anytime! We like being able to offer a fireplace for our guests. I just installed a brand new one that is much easier to use, performs better and has push button operation and electronic ignition. The pinball machine is up for the challenge! Best, John and Sandi

Good location for getting around Portland.

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed our stay. Sandi and John were easy to work with. My husband and I liked the location. The apt was private and clean. Cleanliness and mattress comfort are my pet peeves. The mattress was fine. Nothing to write home about but definitely better than a lot of hotel mattresses I have experienced. The issue my husband and I had was with the cramped space of the bedroom and bathroom. I had to walk sideways to get into bed, between the wall and bed. I am an average size person. The other issue was lack of space to set things down in the bathroom or bedroom. I kept my toiletries on the island in the kitchen. These issues are why I give our stay 4 stars and not 5.

Owner's Response: We enjoyed meeting you guys and it sounds like your first experience with VRBO type rentals was a good one. Your concerns are important to us and help to make future stays for our guests more enjoyable. The issues you mentioned are the first we've heard of them after all the guests we've had so I tend to think most people don't view these items as problems. However, if it's important to you then it's important to us! Regarding the bathroom, we feel it's not so much a lack of bathroom storage but more of the fact that its typical midcentury-era sized home bathroom with a single vanity sink. For our typical guests which are couples or couples with children, storage shouldn't be an issue. Items can be placed on either side of the sink, both on top of and inside the mirrored cabinet, inside the vanity itself, in the two drawers under the vanity, and on the door hooks for hanging toiletry bags. Having said that, we're going to install another cabinet for even more storage space. The bedroom square footage can't be changed and to have a queen sized bed results in the tradeoff of less room around the left side but the right side is larger and there's plenty of room at the foot of the bed. The upside to the space saving realized in the bedroom is that it has a spacious closet and the rest of the rooms in the apartment are large and comfortable such as a full sized kitchen, living room with plenty of seating, a separate dining area, a desk and room for up to two pinball machines plus an outdoor patio. A smaller bedroom/bathroom also means a lower cleaning fee which helps us to offer free amenities such as a bottle of wine and sparkling water, coffee, tea, etc, plus private off street parking and a very fair rental rate. In short, the two smallest rooms are the ones where guests spend the least amount of their waking hours. Again, thanks for staying with us and for the feedback. Come back and work on that pinball score! Regards, John and Sandi

Very hospitable

  • 4 of 5

The location is quiet but near Holgate, which takes you into downtown or public transit, including MAX. John and Sharon kindly let me bring my dog and were very welcoming when I arrived, even helping me bring in my things. They responded very promptly to any questions. The daylight basement is very comfortable, with everything you need for a pleasant visit.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay and it was great to meet Gus. A quick note- our apartment is not a basement or a refinished basement. It's the bottom floor of our split level house. I mention this because some view basements as damp/musty or just not the ideal living space. The vast majority of the square footage of the apartment is ground level, like it's entrance and was constructed along with the rest of the house. Thanks again, John and Sandra
