About Sandra and John

We are from Louisiana and landed in Portland about 7 years ago. I am a voice over artist, actor & real estate investor. John is a former Naval Special Warfare Boat Team operator and is a real estate investor. We love finding diamonds in the rough and restoring them together. We also have a little 4 pound Yorkie named Emma whose nickname is "Nimmers" hence the name Nimmer Nest! She can often be seen sitting in the living room window watching squirrels and birds!

Sandra and John purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Sandra and John chose Reed

This area of Portland is nice and quiet but still close to everything. We love the Reedwood neighborhood because of the cool Mid-century architecture, wide streets & relative lack of power lines that contribute to the "country living in the city" feel as this area was described when being built in the 1950's. We moved from an 1895 home in a busier, noisier neighborhood to quiet Reedwood but is still in the heart of Southeast Portland. This home already had a complete separate apartment that is perfect for visitors wanting to stay in Portland but desire more space and amenities than a typical hotel room such as a full kitchen, patio, yard, and a vintage pinball machine!

What makes this apartment unique

Your own private separate entrance, full kitchen, covered patio with grill and use of backyard. Gas fireplace in living room and electric fireplace in bedroom. DirecTV with over 250 channels with on-demand so you don't miss any of your shows while traveling. DVD player and TV in both the bedroom and living room with DVD Library. The house features both central heat and air conditioning!! Rare for Portland :)

Wonderful location, fabulous stay!

  • 5 of 5

Look no further if you are planning a trip to Portland! Our week long stay was great from beginning to end. The owners are focused on ensuring that travelers have a wonderful retreat, providing many extra details not usually found at vacation homes. From complimentary coffee/tea and snacks to toiletries, umbrellas, maps, restaurant info, games, and first run movies, you will be delighted at the efforts they have taken to make you comfortable. Additionally, they have 2 pinball machines that will keep everyone entertained and 2 gas fireplaces to wind everyone down. In truth, between the pinball and the fireplaces, I wasn't entirely sure I was going to get my husband to go out to see Portland! The location is perfect for walking to many popular areas. Only blocks away from Reed College, Trader Joes, great pubs and restaurants as well as a lovely park. The kitchen has all ware needed for cooking during your stay (plus bbq outside with a lovely yard) and the layout of the living room & kitchen is perfect for families to interact and enjoy time together. The bed is very comfortable and there are two futons in living room for extra family members. Bathroom is very clean and stocked with extra towels/linens. John and Sandra are the perfect hosts for vacationers -- immediately responsive when you need them and out of sight if you don't. They truly go above and beyond to be helpful. As a seasoned vacation home traveler, I highly recommend this rental!

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

Sandra and John's place was a great place to stay for our visit to Portland. They had small touches of hospitality, like a bottle of wine and a few snacks, that we appreciated. They even had dog bowls out for our small pup. They were very hands off and gave us our space, but I knew they were around should we have needed anything. The pinball machines were a hit for our 3 year old and us. It was clean, decorated nicely, and a great value. The neighborhood is great, and turned out to be an excellent location for us - relatively close to things to see/do like the OMSI, and to great restaurants. I highly recommend their place.

Pinball Paradise

  • 5 of 5

John and Sandi's basement apartment is spacious, beautifully decorated, and supplied with everything we needed. We came to Portland for our granddaughter's birthday and the family had a grand time gathering for dinner, TV, and pinball. The two machines brought a touch of the past into the present and made everyone happy. The bed was comfy and I had amazing dreams there. John was available when we needed help and he was a friendly and engaging host. We look forward to our return.

Owner's Response: With the addition of the second machine, pinball tournaments have become a fun part of our guest’s time here. We’re happy to hear your stay was enjoyable and that our rental met and hopefully exceeded your needs. We sincerely hope to have you guys back soon Also, a quick note to future travelers: our home is a mid century split-level with the first floor being our VRBO rental and is not a basement.

Pied-a-terre in Portland

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful apartment in the lower level of the owners' home with separate access and great privacy. John and Sandra are outstanding hosts and the apartment is well appointed and stocked with everything you might need, and if not they will loan it to you from their house. Kitchen is compact but easy for one to cook in.

We rented in the winter and heating was more than enough, and it looks like a great place to be in the summer with private outdoor area and grill. Very suitable for a couple visiting grandchildren or in Portland for other reasons. The pinball machine adds a fun touch and our grandson loved it!

Owner's Response: The pinball seems to be a much-liked amenity along with the new fireplace. Speaking of pinball, congrats on beating the high score which has stood for over two years! Also, another pinball machine will be joining the current one soon so schedule some time for that if you stay with us again. Best, John and Sandi

Perfect Accommodations for Our Stay

  • 5 of 5

We were in town to spend the holidays with our family and this was a great location and perfect size for us. It was an easy stroll to the beautiful Reed College campus, short drive to restaurants and stores, and very close to our kids in SE Portland. The pinball machine was an added plus when the grandkids dropped by, and the fireplace made for cozy evenings. We will definitely stay again when visiting Portland.
