About Sandra and John

We are from Louisiana and landed in Portland about 5 years ago. I am a voice over artist, actor & real estate investor. John is a former Naval Special Warfare Boat Team operator and is a real estate investor. We love finding diamonds in the rough and restoring them together. We also have a little 4 pound Yorkie named Emma whose nickname is "Nimmers" hence the name Nimmer Nest! She can often be seen sitting in the living room window watching squirrels and birds!

Sandra and John purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Sandra and John chose Portland

This area of Portland is nice and quiet but still close to everything. We love the Reedwood neighborhood because of the cool Mid century architecture, wide streets & relative lack of power lines that contribute to the "country living in the city" feel as this area was described when being built in the 1950's. We moved from an 1895 home in a busier, noisier Southeast neighborhood to quiet Reedwood but is still in the heart of Southeast Portland. Our home already had a complete separate apartment that is perfect for visitors wanting to stay in Portland but desire more space and amenities than a typical hotel room such as a full kitchen, patio, yard, and of course, a pinball machine.

What makes this apartment unique

Your own private separate entrance, full kitchen, covered patio with grill and use of backyard. Gas fireplace in living room and electric fireplace in bedroom. DirecTV with over 250 channels with on-demand so you don't miss any of your shows while traveling. DVD player and TV in both the bedroom and living room with DVD Library. The house features Central Heat and Air Conditioning!! Rare for Portland :)

Good location for getting around Portland.

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed our stay. Sandi and John were easy to work with. My husband and I liked the location. The apt was private and clean. Cleanliness and mattress comfort are my pet peeves. The mattress was fine. Nothing to write home about but definitely better than a lot of hotel mattresses I have experienced. The issue my husband and I had was with the cramped space of the bedroom and bathroom. I had to walk sideways to get into bed, between the wall and bed. I am an average size person. The other issue was lack of space to set things down in the bathroom or bedroom. I kept my toiletries on the island in the kitchen. These issues are why I give our stay 4 stars and not 5.

Owner's Response: We enjoyed meeting you guys and your family and are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Concerning storage for toiletries in the bathroom: After many guests this is the first we've heard about storage space. This is not a hotel style bathroom with huge countertops. The bathroom has a single sink vanity with space on either side. There's additional storage on top of the mirrored cabinet above the sink as well as inside of it. Items can also be placed inside the vanity itself and there are two empty drawers below. There's also door hooks for hanging toiletry kits. About the space around the bed: Because you are renting an entire apartment, the narrow space around one side of the bed is more than offset by a spacious closet in the bedroom as well as a dresser, a large living area, full kitchen, dining area, and complimentary items such as a bottle of wine, sparkling water , coffee, tea, and snacks. By offering a very reasonable price for all these things and others incliuding free private off-street parking, we differentiate ourselves from the typical hotel stay. Thank you for taking the time to submit your feedback and we'd love to see you guys again. Regards, John and Sandi

Very hospitable

  • 4 of 5

The location is quiet but near Holgate, which takes you into downtown or public transit, including MAX. John and Sharon kindly let me bring my dog and were very welcoming when I arrived, even helping me bring in my things. They responded very promptly to any questions. The daylight basement is very comfortable, with everything you need for a pleasant visit.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay and it was great to meet Gus. A quick note- our apartment is not a basement or a refinished basement. It's the bottom floor of our split level house. I mention this because some view basements as damp/musty or just not the ideal living space. The vast majority of the square footage of the apartment is ground level, like it's entrance and was constructed along with the rest of the house. Thanks again, John and Sandra

Kindest, friendliest, and most accommodating hosts ever

  • 5 of 5

From the get go John and Sandra were answering all my questions within 10 - 30 minutes. They were able to accommodate me on all my requests, they even offered us to stay late because there was no one renting later that day. The unit has a great floor plan and great flow, with a fireplace in the main room and bedroom. The location is close to downtown Portland and easy to get to. I would recommend this unit to anyone with pets and family.

Mountain View

Hosts are phenomenally generous!!!

  • 5 of 5

Overall, this is an ideal one bedroom apartment situation, especially if you're looking for an alternative to a hotel room and would prefer two separate rooms. Also, a kitchen with a stove and full sized refrigerator make it entirely feasible to cook in the unit.

Airbnb in the Portland area had fewer reasonably priced listings than vrbo, although many places were cross listed.

With taxes, this ended up costing slightly more than a one room, two queen sized bed three star hotel we had previously booked. This is not an anonymous experience. John lives and works from home so you'll likely see the hosts when coming and going. They also have a small dog that barks some. It's beneath the main floor of the house so you'll probably hear people walking above you, which is common with many first floor apartments. All of these things were minor compared to the joy of having a large space. Beds are not like hotel beds, more like if you were visiting friends and relatives and they let you stay with them.

Seemed like it would be difficult to get by in this area as a tourist without a car. There was a bus line in walking distance but it wasn't very user friendly. If you stay here and want to go all around in a tourist type fashion, would be better to have a rental car.

Note: Bathroom has a tiny, narrow shower and no bathtub. It does have a detachable shower head. This would be challenging for larger adults, I imagine. My almost five year old still prefers baths, so I just kind of had to spray him down instead.

All in all, great place with gracious hosts. John helped me dry some laundry that was still damp from having to be pulled out too soon from the dryer at my brother's place in Seattle. He could easily have said that the dryer wasn't for guest use, but he instead kindly helped. Really responsive instantly to text messages.

Owner's Response: Hello April, Thank you for your review and honest comments. I'll address your concerns: We very much encourage our guests to thoroughly read our apartment description, view the pictures and ask any questions prior to booking so that they will see that there is a shower only, we do have a small dog, and that we live upstairs. During your stay, we had a couple of rare events back-to-back that increased the noise level a bit (our place is normally very quiet as our reviews attest to) and that was the arrival of in-laws as well as friends with a dog which caused Emma to bark . I apologize for that as Emma is pretty much seen and not heard. Portland is known for it's good public transportation and the number 17 bus stop is 1.5 blocks from our house. It's a major bus line that runs every 12 or 20 minutes depending on the time of day and goes from our residence to the South Waterfront, downtown, Pearl District, NE Portland, Moda Center, Convention Center, and Lloyd Center mall. From downtown you can take the MAX line to the zoo, Rose Garden, airport, etc. We've had guests that have used public transport only or rented bikes and had a great time but a rental car is rarely a bad idea. We've never had anyone mention that the shower size was an issue and we've had guests well over 6 feet here. The newly tiled shower is a size that's commensurate with a 1969 mid-century home and is the same size as the shower in the home's original master bathroom. It's definitely not as big as the large, walk-in showers installed in new homes these days. Again, thanks for the honest critique as these are items we'd never had anyone mention before and it gives us a chance to address them and reiterate some points on booking procedures. Hopefully we'll see you guys for another visit! Best, John and Sandi
