Overview

About the property

Huge 2,000 sq/ft 2 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4 with giant living & dining room

This is a historic house in Portland's most beautiful Eastside neighborhood (Irvington). Located on a large, corner lot in the most desirable part of Irvington and one block from the Irvington Club, The Turret House is gorgeously maintained and features countless elements from its original 1920's design. The upstairs perch features "tree house" views of the neighborhood and oak floors throughout, along with 12+ ft high ceilings. The property has 5 giant old growth trees that feel like quintessential Portland. The apartment is ideal for anyone wanting to access all the culture of the Eastside while staying in a tranquil setting with a grand fireplace, extra large dining and living room, and a large back patio.

Enter through your your own private entrance through the turret and up a spiral staircase to your 2nd floor, 2000 square feet apartment with 2 bedrooms (each with queen bed), 1 large bath, a grand living room with fireplace and very high ceilings, large formal dining room, breakfast nook, large kitchen full of cooking utensils, laundry, and original large windows on all sides. Windows look out onto a range of old-growth trees and gorgeous neighboring houses that are some of the nicest in all of Portland. At 2,000 square feet, the apartment is very spacious and well accommodated. Even the bathroom is huge! The apartment also features 30 windows, so the place is bright and sunny and there are views of the neighborhood in almost all directions.

Irvington is one of the country's largest historic neighborhoods and is centrally located for Eastside Culture while offering quick access to downtown via Broadway Ave. Irving Park is a 10 min walk from the house and the Convention Center is a short distance away.

About alex michel

I grew up in Seattle and spent the last 12 years in San Francisco. I moved to Portland to have a calmer life last year.

alex michel purchased this apartment in 2015

Why alex michel chose Portland

This is one of the more unique places in all of Portland. The Spanish Californian architecture and very large windows and rooms were compelling to me.

What makes this apartment unique

The living room (with fireplace), bedrooms, and dining room are very large with high ceilings and long rows of windows. The place is surrounded by old growth trees and located inside a beautiful historic neighborhood.

Nice place with a few caveats

  • 4 of 5

We were two couples in our 40's staying for 2 nights while enjoying Portland. The house itself is beautiful and such lovely architecture, and the neighbourhood is also nice and quiet and treed.

I enjoyed our stay but with a few comments:

1) there is no TV in the living area - the only TV is in one of the bedrooms so just something to keep in mind if you want a common TV

2) our host lives in the unit below ours and welcomed the public during a historical open house on the Sunday from approximately 1-6pm. I would have preferred to know this as there were many people approaching the entrance and chatting/walking through the unit below for a good chunk of the afternoon. Not a huge deal but I would have liked to know this was happening.

3) When we arrived in the unit, there were women's underwear laying in the hallway of our unit. The owner apologized as he uses the common laundry in the stairwell that both units share. There is no lock on our unit's door to the shared laundry space which made me uncomfortable, since our unit was described as self-contained. We wedged it closed with a doorstop to feel better about it but not ideal.

4) The unit itself needs a bit of minor TLC - there was dust on surfaces, the living room lamp lights were burnt out and the fridge freezer needs a good defrost to help cool the fridge properly. With a cleaning fee of more than 1/3 of the overall nightly rental I would expect to see a unit freshly cleaned and ready for visitors.

I probably wouldn't book this unit again, although it was a lovely place and neighbourhood. A few slight changes to the description of the unit (laundry shared space with no locked door) and a fresh cleaning would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Beautiful old apartment in a great location.

  • 4 of 5

It is such a beauty. We loved our stay. The only reason it misses 5 stars would be that it could use a new mattress, but in every other way the entire stay was perfect!

Holiday Shopping Trip to Portland

  • 4 of 5

My wife, two teenage daughters and I enjoyed a pleasant and refreshing stay at the Turret House. It's a fun place to visit with plenty of room to move around and relax. It's a very prestigious neighborhood, lots of street parking with very important Starbucks and Whole Foods a 5 minute drive away through this historic part of town . The girls really enjoyed the unique style of the house and we're all happy to be able to visit both Portland and stay in this home in the future. Thank you Alex.

Beautiful home, spacious, great location, comfortable, wood floors, lots of windows, great bed!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful week in the downstairs apartment of this beautiful, spacious and gracious home. It is located in the Irvington District of Portland, an enclave of older, stylish homes. It has wood floors throughout except for the tile in the bathroom. Large windows (that open) wrap around the dining room, living room and bedrooms making the interior bright and airy. The king size bed seems to be custom made and has a very comfortable mattress, with duvets for coverings. I slept great!

The location served us well, as it was centrally located for visiting friends and seeing sights in all parts of town, including Vancouver, Washington, East and North Portland and downtown. It is a short drive to a MAX (train) station. We went on several hikes with friends and ate at various places around town. The apartment was as advertised and was clean, neat and well kept.

We had four friends over for dinner one evening and were able to easily accommodate them all at the large dining table (seats 10) in the spacious dining room. My wife and I ate breakfast at a counter in the kitchen area every morning. There is also a nice backyard area that has a fire pit, several chairs, a grill, a picnic table, overhead lights and a hammock.

The owner (Alex) has many interesting books shelved at various places throughout the home and I spent one evening reading a couple of them by the fire. I wish I had this home in Austin. I can recommend this home for any group of up to 4 people. It is easily accessible for late arrival and Alex can be contacted quickly if any issues arise. Staying there was a delightful experience and my wife and I will certainly check to see if it is available anytime we return to Portland.

Classic and huge!

  • 5 of 5

The Turret House was lovely! What a beautiful old home in a wonderful, classic Portland neighborhood. All the rooms were large, and both nicely and comfortably furnished. Alex clearly thought about what guests might need and the house was well stocked - extra blankets, fluffy towels, chef's tools in the kitchen, extension cords, cold water in the fridge, interesting books on the shelves, coffee! My family and I would absolutely stay there again and I very much recommend it. It was like staying with a friend.
