About the property

Unique Garden Apartment, Great Bay Views, Sleeps Up to Four.

Sit by the fire. Eat under the pear tree. Soak in the tub. Enjoy a little of life unplugged. 'the nifty' (as we call it) is a sweet retreat that can comfortably accommodate up to four people in a back garden setting, close to terrific beaches, forests, downtown arcata and humboldt state university.

This unique, spacious and fully equipped apartment is equally well set up for a romantic getaway as it is for a family holiday. The space is cheerful and sunny, set in a quiet back garden environment, with enough room and amenities for you to settle in and get comfortable. It functions well as a home base for those wanting to visit or explore the area, or as a good temporary place to land for those arriving to stay.

This apartment comprises part of a larger high end residence, but is fully self-contained with its own entrance and a designated parking space. The space centers around a large open plan kitchen/living/dining room area, with a queen bed tucked away off to the side behind a colorful wall of cabinets. There is a single daybed in the adjoining room and for parties with four guests we can locate another single mattress in the same room as necessary.

The full kitchen is well equipped for those who wish to cook, and you are in close proximity to the backyard fire area and picnic table for outdoor dining or barbequing. The toilet and vanity are inside the apartment, while the claw foot tub/shower is located immediately outside, tucked away under the upper deck. For those who haven’t used an outside shower/bath before, you’re in for a treat….Private enough for shy folks, but a nice twist on the usual bathing experience.

Bayside is a sweet arcata neighborhood with a semi-rural feel, just two miles from the very center of arcata and humboldt state university, and seven from downtown eureka. The property has panoramic views over humboldt bay and marsh areas that are part of the pacific flyway for many kinds of migratory birds. Depending on the season, the sound of cows in the fields is complemented by the sounds of thousands of wild geese coming and going; frogs chorusing; coyotes yipping.

There is a delightful coffee house at the corner, or head into arcata or eureka to find a nice range of local restaurants. The closest supermarket is a mile away, but venture a mile further to find two remarkably well stocked natural foods supermarkets in downtown arcata. Alternatively, stock up at one of the many local farmers markets - especially saturdays on the arcata plaza - which offer great local produce and fun people watching. We also have an organic community farm with farm stand about a 1/4 mile down the road.

About Bella Holmes

I grew up in Brisbane, Australia, but have been based in Humboldt County, California, for most of the last twenty plus years.

I first left Australia as a 17 year old exchange student to Mexico for a year, and have since traveled quite a bit. One way or another, that first overseas adventure played a big part in me spending most of my adult life on the other side of the world from where I started.

My husband, Don, is originally from Florida, but has been in Humboldt County since the early 1970s. He's a general building contractor by trade, but these days we mostly work together on our collection of rental properties. We love remodeling and fixing places up and we have a lot of fun creating sweet places for people to live and stay. Most of our rentals are regular longer term tenancies, but we are enjoying the move into furnished short term and visitor accommodations.

We have two girls who are 11 and 13, and a flock of backyard chickens. We are also in the process of setting up a big veggie garden and planting more fruit trees. We love to cook together, drink a little red wine, mountain bike in the forest, and run away to the beach or the mountains when we can wrestle our various projects into submission. It's a good life and a lovely place to live (and visit!).

We have lived in Bayside for the last 13 years - at the same location as two of our short stay listings - but we have recently moved two miles into the heart of Arcata to rehabilitate a dilapidated but delightful Victorian that was once Arcata's original hospital/sanitarium. Rumor has it that it's haunted but if that's the case, they seem happy to have a family back on the premises. We have brought the chickens with us :)

Quality A+

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful remodel of a daylight basement. No corners were cut. Well equipped kitchen with great windows. The outdoor shower was a bit weird at first but functional and fun. The tub was so big I could swim in it. Only thing we missed was a microwave. Bella was quick to reply as was her helper, Katie. Very accommodating. We would definitely recommend "the Nifty"

Spacious and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Great location in Bayside neighborhood. Well equipped kitchen (although we never cooked while there). Very comfortable bed. The outside shower was a treat; even with the cold, rainy weather. We would stay here again!

A Perfectly Cosy Place!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful 2 month stay at the Nifty. It was perfect — everything we could want was provided (in the kitchen and furnishings, etc, etc.), the landlords were wonderful, the outdoor tub/shower was enjoyable. Can not wait until we can go back - we loved it! Many thanks to Bella and Don for all the perfect little touches!

Lincoln, NE

a peaceful hideout in Arcata

  • 5 of 5

Once again I was reminded why I prefer to stay in a VRBO on my adventures! I instantly feel like part of the community rather than a visitor. For my son and I the Nifty was a sweet place to be. We enjoyed cooking together and relaxing at the end of the day. The private soaks outside made this visit unique and memorable. It was very clean and included special attention from the owner upon our arrival!

Clean, beautiful craftsmanship, quiet country setting

  • 5 of 5

Bella is a wonderful host. She responded quickly to our inquiries and she was so helpful when we met in person. The apartment in this remodeled home is comfortable and opens up to a patio and garden with a view of Humbolt Bay. A nice coffee shop is at the end of the street. They had a waffle special on Saturday and they were delicious. It is less than 2 miles from HSU and the Arcata Square.

It is quiet, peaceful and comfortable and Bella has thought of everything to make the stay perfect. We hope to return one day.
