As you enter this unique, historic home you will discover a level of gracious, artisan living that encourages creativity and relaxation. Original art, spacious rooms and oversized windows invite you to enjoy your own unique approach to vacation life. Enjoy dramatic views that take in the Juneau-Douglas Channel, Sandy Beach and the quaint towns of Douglas and Juneau. This 2200 square foot home was built in 1914 and has been carefully renovated into a spacious, modern home, we call the Fleek House.
Hand finished original, clear Douglas Fir floors hint at times past and offer a rich golden hue underfoot throughout the main living areas. The Fleek House features in-floor heat which is gentle on the body and reduces dust in the home. The home is framed with clear fir timbers and features hard wood flooring throughout, so people with allergies can more easily enjoy the home.
The Fleek House offers 3 bedrooms, an upstairs bonus room and 2.5 bathrooms and can sleep 7 people in beds. For an additional guest fee, one foldout foam mattress pad and the leather couch can accommodate an additional 2 guests.
A hand built entertainment center houses a large TV, wifi router and cable box is in the living room. Comfy furniture and warm throws invite you to snuggle in and enjoy the view, or catch a show on TV.
The kitchen offers granite counters, custom maple cabinets and an eat-in bar with seating for four. The appliances are stainless steel and include a double electric oven and a gas range top, a dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator/freezer. Gather meal inspiration from the cookbook collection and prepare an Alaskan meal fit for kings and queens. A custom built steel and wood dining table can seat up to 12 guests with an additional 4 at the bar.
The Fleek House has a full laundry/mud room with new high efficiency washer and dryer on the main floor.
Relax and unwind in the oversized master suite on the main floor. A spacious bathroom features a walk-in tiled shower, his and her vanities, a separate commode room and a walk-in closet.
Climb the stairs to discover 2 bedrooms, one with a queen sized bed and one with a full sized bed. There is also a bonus room with a loveseat that opens into a twin bed, and one foam fold-out sleeping pad. A full bathroom with a tub is available to upstairs guests.
The Fleek House is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the small town of Douglas. You can walk from the house to a really great dining and cocktail experience at the Island Pub which is only 3 blocks away. Or enjoy one of the many award-winning Alaskan Brewery beers at Louie's Douglas Inn Bar, also only 3 blocks away. If you are a walker, this home offers several easy walking loops from .25 mile to over 3 miles in length. In fact, historic downtown Juneau is only three miles away if you really want to stretch your legs!
There are two to three off-street parking spaces in the driveway off of E Street for the Fleek House.
Although we love animals, we are not able to accommodate pets in this home as we are maintaining the home to be restful and pleasing to those who suffer from allergies. For this same reason, we are not able to offer in-home smoking options. For those able to smoke outside and properly dispose of cigarette butts, this home might still offer a lovely accommodation.
Hello! We are Sydney and Alan and we LOVE houses, especially houses with character and charm. Alan is a contractor and Sydney is a graphic designer turned shoe store owner (she owns Shoefly Alaska in historic downtown Juneau). Together we re-design homes and either sell or rent them to people who also love houses. Sydney grew up in Southeast Alaska, spending time in Cordova, Yakutat, Ketchikan and Juneau. Alan grew up in California, specifically the very Northern part of the state with massive redwood forests and the brilliant green Smith River. They met in in California, got married and decided to move to Juneau, Alaska. Alan agreed to a five-year adventure and over 20 years later we are still here enjoying all Southeast Alaska has to offer!
Sydney and Alan purchased this house in 2009
Again, we LOVE houses with character and charm and this rustic mining home was on the verge of condemnation when it came to our attention. We tramped through the home in the dark (the power was turned off) cold of winter and instantly could see the lovely potential it had. As we like to say, the home has "good bones." The home became our "side" project and we worked on it in our spare time from 2009 to 2015. We discovered that the home was built in 1914 and was known as the Fleek House up until we purchased it. This home has survived two major fires that destroyed blocks of downtown Douglas and with our structural improvements and modern insulation and heating systems , it is one of the coziest homes in Douglas when the Taku Winds howl up to 100 miles per hour every winter. We are pleased to know that this home will continue to grace the hillside of downtown Douglas for years to come.
The Fleek House offers a hand crafted, artisan home space that we think encourages relaxation while inspiring creativity. Read a book curled up on the divan in the living room or sip a great wine at the kitchen bar while you admire the view up the Juneau Douglas Channel to Taku Harbor. Gather fresh Alaska seafood and all the fixings for a gourmet meal which your whole group can cook up in the spacious kitchen. Then serve it up on our custom crafted metal and wood dining room table. Or skip cooking in and stroll to a great cocktail and dinner at the Island Pub only three blocks away. This home offers a slice of small town life with some urban-level restaurant, bar and theatre options. A great combo!
Sydney & Alan,
Can't begin to express our thanks and joy in staying at your lovely home. Talk about a home away from home! It lacked for nothing in helping us have one of the best trips on the planet. We will be back and we will tell the world of your wonderful oasis here on Douglas.
With Love & Blessings,
Alicia and 6 Tennessee Sweethearts!
We enjoyed our stay at Fleek House but found it jarring to realize someone was living in the basement. We could hear the woman talking on the phone very easily. There was a good bit of noise being made later in the evening and the dogs barked. I think you should advise people this is a shared property, not a single family residence.
We enjoyed Juneau and Douglas and ate at the Island Pub several times. Convenient and pretty good as well.
This house was great for our family of 8. Everything was so clean and all of the nice little amenities made it a great place to spend our week in Juneau. Excellent location - close to cool places to explore. Would definitely stay there again if in Juneau. Owners communicated well and obvious want to make their guests' stay a comfortable one.
Well located and the remolding was fabulous. The guests enjoyed it very much.
The Fleek House in Douglas, Alaska, just three miles from Juneau, provided a perfect setting for our family vacation. The seven of us, which included a mom, two daughters and their husbands, and two grandkids, had plenty of room not only for cooking and eating meals together, playing games, and hanging out but also for retreating to our bedrooms for rest and relaxation. The owners put a great deal of effort into making this home beautiful, comfortable, and convenient. The property was clean and is well-maintained, and the owners checked in with us to see if everything was to our liking.
Our favorite feature of the house were the picture windows at the front. The house sits high on a hill, so we had a stunning view of Gastineau Channel. We never tired of watching the cruise ships coming and going, the eagles soaring about, the waterfalls on Mt. Roberts, and seaplanes on their daily excursions. We were even treated to a double rainbow one day! The house is also within easy walking distance of Sandy Beach and the Treadwell trails, so we spent time enjoying them almost every day during our two-week stay.
We would definitely choose the Fleek House on another visit to Juneau and will enthusiastically recommend it to friends and relatives!
The house is gorgeous and perfectly located. It was an awesome stay.
Downtown Douglas offers a range of walking and hiking loops and trails. Walk a gentle loop through historic residential neighborhoods and old mining sites and sandy beaches. Or, hike the Mt. Jumbo trail or the Treadwell Ditch Trail.
Once you've worked up an appetite, enjoy the Island Pub or the Douglas Cafe and quench your thirst with tasty libations from the Island Pub or Louie's' Douglas Inn. Take in a play at the Perseverance Theatre or local musicians performing at the Island Pub or Louie's.
Hop over to Juneau and shop in the year-round historic shops along Seward Street, Front Street and North Franklin Street. Schedule a flightseeing tour with Wings & Taku Glacier Lodge, or a whale watching cruise or a fishing charter expedition. Enjoy king crab at Tracy's King Crab Shack from May to September. Enjoy fresh Alaska cuisine at SALT or the Rookery on Seward Streets. Both of these restaurants are passionate about food and sourcing fresh, local ingredients. Watch float planes come in and out while dining at the Hangar on the Wharf and be sure to stop in the Alaska Brewery shops downtown.
