-'Cardinal Cottage' is a cozy, lovely retreat located in a quiet, secluded, wooded area in the foothills of the north/ central section of the beautiful, rolling Massanutten Mountains, in the Luray Valley portion of the northern/central Shenandoah Valley.

-The 2-bedroom, 1-full bath, single-level, multi-season, fully-furnished cottage is located on 10+ wooded acres, accessed from a paved state road, by an all-season (well-graded, well-maintained, gravel) entrance road into a premier subdivision (SD), about 5 miles west of the town of Luray, VA. (Our SD's entrance road previously served as a logging and fire service access road up into the George Washington (GW) National Forest.) Note also that while we are located within a residental subdivision, no other homes are visible from Cardinal Cottage.

-Cardinal Cottage is within 1/2 mile of a free, public river access/ boat landing/ launching ramp (with plenty of free parking) on the Shenandoah River (the South Fork, at a relatively wide and deep section), & is adjacent to the GW Nat. Forest (which is our Subdivision's back boundary/ property line, with informal hiking access). Nearby is a Forest Service/ fire service access road (with free access, but is unfortunately closed to the public during the snow season) up into the GW National Forest, with a number of well-marked/ blazed hiking, mountain biking & off-road vehicle trails, 2 great overlooks down onto & across the Shenandoah Valley, picnic areas, and plenty of free parking.

-We are close to: the world-famous Luray Caverns (approx. 4 miles); to an access/ entrance station of the Shenandoah National Park (approx. 10 miles) & the Skyline Drive (connecting to the Blue Ridge Parkway) & the Appalachian Trail; and only about 15 miles from the beautiful, new “Andy” Guest Virginia State Park (with their wooded hiking/ biking trails, and tree-top ziplines) w/ miles of Shen. River access.

-Cardinal Cottage is Non-Smoking (please) within the cottage (ashtrays are provided on the front deck & on the back, screened porch).

-Amenities include: an all-season outdoor hot tub (seats 4, located close to, & directly behind the cottage); a screened back porch with picnic table & chairs; an open, front sun deck with picnic table, chairs & reclining lounge chairs; a full kitchen (with a full-size refrigerator w/ top freezer, a 4-burner stove and large oven, a toaster, microwave and toaster ovens, 2 coffee makers, ...) & a dining area; a gas-log fireplace in the Living Room; electric baseboard heat (with thermostats in each room); window A/C units (4); satellite TV (w/ many music channels); free, secure wireless internet access; phone (free local calls, & your cell phone will probably work, most do); AM/ FM stereo radio, DVD, Blu-Ray, VCR, audio-CD players; 2 charcoal grills (with 'grill'n' & 'smores tools) & a picnic table in the yard; & a small fire pit (w/ dry firewood available). Also, a clock radio & 2 alarm clocks (if you really need them while you're on vacation).

-We generally have many "visiting" birds (including song birds, hawks, owls), deer, fox & other forest "critters", and many other shy wildlife,

-Many scenic/ Indian/ native, historic & Civil War sites are nearby.

-Cardinal Cottage is an eco- & family-friendly/ energy efficient/ "green" building, w/ a level/ grassy side yard (for relaxing, tanning, outdoor games, dog walking, ...).

-Hiking access (informal) up into the GW National Forest. is close by. Many other hiking trails are also available nearby.

-Small pets are permitted (with permission, & for which a small charge is made).

-'Luray Caverns Packages' (which includes admission to the Caverns & most of their other attractions) are available, as well as discounts at some other local attractions, and with some local merchants.

-A REFUNDABLE loss/ damage/ security deposit is requested (if the optional VRBO-offered Property Damage Protection (PDP) plan is declined).

-The Bedroom setup: BdRm #1 w/ Queen bed + 1 twin bed; BdRm #2 w/ Double/ Full bed + 1 twin bed. Also, a Queen sleeper sofa-bed is in the Living rm. 1 full bath.

-Bed linens (sheets & pillowcases) & towels can be provided (by arrangement) at moderate cost (otherwise, please bring what you need + extra towels for use at the hot tub). A clothesline for drying is located on the screened porch. Blankets & pillows are provided.

-Shopping/ restaurants/ deli/ bakery/ food/ beverage/ pharmacy/ drug stores/ library/ post office/ movie theater/ coin laundry/ banks/ 24-hr access $$-machines/ used book store/ brewery/ wine & beer "tours & tasting"/ ... are located in/ around Luray, & in 2 shopping centers close to town (one of which has a large, 24-hr WalMart (w/ food & pharmacy departments), & a Food Lion (chain food store, with beer & wine sales), & an ABC state liquor/ package store). Also a large CVS Drug Store is close by, as are hardware, auto supply stores, & gas stations. A legal(!) distillery is located nearby.

-Plenty of parking is available in the private, off-road driveway adjacent to the Cottage. The Cottage is set back from the SD entrance road, and is partially screened from the road by trees (as is the new hot tub (with 2 Tiki torches) behind the Cottage).

-A large, flat, grassy side yard exists (ideal for outdoor games), which is also partially screened/ surrounded by trees.

-While we do not claim to meet ADA guidelines, we are aware of the guidelines, and feel that Cardinal is "ADA-friendly". We have hosted some guests with physical limitations/ disabilities (and a number of wonderful senior citizens, most of whom are not disabled, but may need some extra accommodations or help), and a few brave, young, military recovering/ rehabilitating 'wounded warriors'. (We are retired military!) Please feel free to contact us (preferably by phone at (301) 524-5143) to discuss your needs; we will do our best to try to accommodate, and will answer your questions honestly.

-We try our best to make your visit most enjoyable. To that goal, we have responded to requests from guests, and have added the following:

-Arrangements have been established to provide flowers, chocolates, birthday and other "special event" cakes and cookies to guests from local merchants.

-A neighbor in the subdivision is a licensed massage therapist, and is available to bring her portable massage table & equipment to Cardinal to provide relaxing massage(s) to guests.

-We have recently become associated with 'My Vacay Valet', a local service which can: unload luggage from your vehicle, deliver pre-ordered groceries, help set up special equipment (such as travel cribs), and load your vehicle upon departure. Please inquire to make arrangements.

- Cheers and enjoy!

Zory R. Glaser purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Zory R. Glaser chose Shenandoah Valley

-Purchased 'Cardinal Cottage' as an unfinished/ shell cabin, in '87 (after camping on, and then developing (as noted earlier) a near-by property), with the intent to bring my late mother-in-law "out into the country" (she loved visiting, and wanted to "get out of the city").

-Expanded and finished-off/ decorated/ landscaped the original shell cabin. Prior to mom relocating, she had an accident (& underwent multi-surgeries) from which she (unfortunately) didn't recover. Placed the finished/ furnished cabin/ cottage on the rental market, and had a number of interesting long-term tenants (including a writer/ novelist, the editor of the local newspaper, a landscape artist/ painter (and his girlfriends!), a National Park ranger, a local school teacher couple, ...).

-Recognizing (in approx. '97) a need for short-term rentals in the Luray area, we began to focus on the multi-season, short-term/ vacation rental visitors to the area.

-Many of our guests are "returnees", adult children of former guests, and/or "referrals" from former guests.

-We welcome young families, seniors & retirees, members of the military, and have also hosted some (very deserving & very appreciative) recovering/ rehabilitating military "wounded warriors".

What makes this cottage unique

We initially (1980) used the Luray property for camping, canoeing & enjoying the local water sports, horse riding, "communing" with nature, relaxing, hiking, nature photography, amateur astronomy, cross-country skiing, sightseeing, and as a base for day (and longer) -trips throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

-It was a wonderful way to interact with (and keep together) my active, growing, maturing children (especially as a single parent), and some of their friends.

-After "roughing it" for about 3 seasons, we began to construct a log home (as noted earlier) and a separate 2-car garage/ workshop on the property (with which we had, by that time, fallen in love). A few years later we purchased a near-by shell cabin (which, upon finishing, became "Cardinal Cottage") as described above. We love the quiet beauty and the "closeness to nature", and the beautiful, relaxed, scenic Shenandoah Valley area in all seasons, and enjoy showing family and friends around the area.

Great home base for a wedding in Luray

  • 5 of 5

Zory was very communicative throughout our stay. And the cottage served all our needs during our two night stay.

Owner's Response: Guests were 3 friends of the bride, who traveled to Luray from the west coast (Seattle, WA) in order to attend/ participate in the wedding of their friend. We exchanged a number of E-messages (relating to their visit to the area) prior to their actual arrival. They used Cardinal Cottage as their base, and participated in the wedding (held at a lovely, near-by wedding venue in the Luray area), as well as a number of pre- and post- wedding activities. Following their visit, they left us a note stating "Thanks for the lovely stay at Cardinal Cottage! All went very well, and the wedding and related events were enjoyed by all! We appreciate all your help." We're delighted that they enjoyed their visit to the Luray area, their stay at Cardinal, and appreciate the review and their kind words. We welcome them back.

It was everything my husband and I was looking for. Very quiet and secluded but not to far from the very quaint town of Luray. The owner is very friendly, welcoming and informative.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the great review from a nice young military (Air Force) couple, who enjoyed their stay so much that they requested to extend by an additional day. Enjoyed chatting with them by phone shortly after they arrived at Cardinal, and they had a few questions. They also were very kind (and helpful) in replacing a burned out bulb in the ceiling light fixture on the screened back porch. We got them fixed up with admission vouchers for the world-famous Luray Caverns, and for the Car and Carriage Museum, and the Museum of the Luray Valley (both on the Caverns grounds), and which they indicated that they enjoyed visiting. Glad they also enjoyed sightseeing in the Luray area, and relaxing while driving around the beautiful County. Also appreciate the kind note (thanking us) that they left for us at the cabin when they departed. We welcome them back.

Quiet, peaceful getaway

  • 4 of 5

This was just what we were looking for! A peaceful and quiet place off the beaten path but easily accessible! The charcoal grill was great for our dinners and the fire pit for s'mores.... the hot tub was nice too. Everything was clean and Zory was good to work with and left us a bottle of wine chilling for our arrival.

Owner's Response: Thanks to recent guests (who came from DE, and were celebrating their wedding anniversary (without their kids)) for their kind words. Glad they enjoyed their visit to the Luray area (including a visit to the Caverns and museums), the accommodations at Cardinal Cottage, and our hospitality. They requested that they be permitted to extend their stay at Cardinal by 1 additional day, and left us a beautiful note stating that they "found everything as it was described", and "enjoyed the grill, firepit, screened porch, and especially the hot tub", and that their "only regret is that our stay was too short!". They also commented that they "enjoyed the much needed R & R, and the peace and quiet", and thanked us "for a charming stay at Cardinal Cottage". We welcome them back (with or without their children).

Great week!.

  • 5 of 5

Zory Glaser was so pleasant and easy to deal with . He welcomed our two little dogs without any issue, assisted us with getting tickets to the Luray Caverns and it's museums, information on surrounding attractions, places to eat and the local community. He even had a bottle of wine chilling in the refrigerator on our arrival. Cardinal Cabin was just what we were looking for. Cardinal Cottage has a very welcoming feeling as you enter. The cottage was very clean. It is cozy and yet was room enough for us to invite friends over for dinner during our stay. Being March the nights were still chilly. However, we didn't need to use the electric heat as the gas fireplace kept the cabin warm and comfortable while adding a romantic touch. The cottage has two bedrooms although we only needed one. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of extra pillows. (we like more then one for sleeping). The hot tub was awesome wonderful ending to a day spent at the Civil War Museum and battlefields in New Market. And if you are a Dukes of Hazard fan, Cooters is less then 5 minutes from Cardinal Cottage!

We would recommend Cardinal Cottage to anyone looking for a comfortable relaxing place to stay that feels like home, has room for others to visit (if you know anyone in the area),is close to area attractions, has privacy, surrounded by nature.

We would love to stay here again in the future!

Owner's Response: Wow! What a nice review. I'm humbled. Guests were a very friendly semi-retired couple (and their two 4-legged "children"/ pet dogs) who traveled a great distance to get to the area, and who have long-time friends living in Page County, close to Luray, with whom they planned to visit. I had spoken to the guests by phone and exchanged a few E-mails prior to their arrival, so I learned that they wanted to visit some area Civil War sites, and the Luray Caverns and their associated museums, wanted to sight-see in the area, wanted to visit a vineyard, and were planning to "eat out" a few times during their 1-week stay. As a result, I left them info on the area's restaurants and historical/ Civil War sites, got them admission vouchers for the Caverns, left the local newspaper (and the food market sale ads) so they could see the activities and events going on in the area, and left a County road map. Glad they got to visit with their local friends. We are delighted that they enjoyed their stay, the hot tub, the gas-log fireplace, and our other acommodations, and are planning to return. We welcome them (and their dogs) back! (Note added after the initial visit: they returned in June for a "long weekend", and have indicated plans to return again in the "leaf color-changing"/ fall season.)

Very nice cabin and property

Well taken care of, stocked and supplied. Only 10 minutes from shopping but in a very quiet subdivision.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the kind words from recent guests at Cardinal Cottage. During (and following) their stay, they indicated that they did some hiking, much relaxing at Cardinal, a bit of touring and sightseeing around the area, and appreciated the great Spring weather (in February!) and consequently the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. They also indicated that they had an opportunity to engage (with our permission) in some serious target practice in/on the wooded property which we own across the road from Cardinal. We are glad they enjoyed their visit to the area, and their stay at Cardinal, and we welcome them back.

Great welcoming cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented this place out for 3 days/2 nights and was very happy with our stay. The owner was very responsive during the rental process and even allowed us to bring our dog. You can tell he really takes care of his place and ensures that you enjoy your stay. He also had a bottle of wine waiting for us upon arrival. The cabin is spacious and very clean. There is an outdoor grill to use, bring your own charcoal, a small out door fire pit and nice hot tub. Would recommend and rent again!

Owner's Response: Delighted to receive the great review from a nice couple who were recent guests, and who appreciated (and took time to comment on) the effort, time and extra care we provide to try to ensure that our guests enjoy their stay at Cardinal Cottage. We welcome them back! Glad that they enjoyed the hot tub, use of the charcoal grills, and the fire pit, as well as the opportunity to hike and tour the local area, and of course to visit the Caverns, the National Forest, and the Skyline Drive.
