Hi! My name is Darin Brown. I am a retired physician living in north central Florida. My wife of twenty-nine years is a former teacher and still full-time mom. We both attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. We are the proud parents of two lovely teen-aged daughters. We plan to relocate to Vilano Beach as soon as the girls graduate from high school.
Darin Brown purchased this bungalow in 2014
This is a charming pet-friendly cottage that is about as close to the beach as you can get. After driving for 21 hours and arriving at 12:30 am, it was a great relief to open the door (yay! the code worked) and see what a gem this place is. It was much larger than what I thought it would be. The furniture was comfortable and beds were OK. I do feel the beds could be a bit more stable. They moved very easily and just felt unsteady. The general storage room with the washer/dryer and beach toys/chairs was such a bonus and we used both while we were there. The full kitchen was great, especially with us being there for 9 days and having a teenager. Both bedrooms have sliding doors that open to the back deck, which had a love seat and two chairs w/coffee table. Such a great little spot to sit and listen to the waves, look at the ocean and just relax. One day was cool and we enjoyed sitting in and watching Netflix on the TV. I really enjoyed the fact that there was only one TV so my son HAD to spend time with us. The grocery store is within walking distance and the bridge to get to historic St. Augustine is less than 3 blocks away. It was even more convenient than when I stayed on Anastasia Island and had to go over the Bridge of Lions.
The ONLY reason I didn't give this property a 5 is the shower. It is the smallest and most uncomfortable shower I've ever been in. The entrance to the shower is so small that you have to step in sideways. The water pressure and temperature were great and the height was fantastic but the shower itself was maybe 3 x 3 feet (and I'm being generous). In addition, there were no shelves to put your shampoo/soap etc. and putting them on the shower floor is not an option because it's too tight to reach down and retrieve them. My son is 6'1" and only 130 lbs and even he was uncomfortable in the shower.
Couple suggestions for the owners:
- install locks on the screen doors in the bedrooms. While we didn't encounter anything that made us feel unsafe, the only reason I slept with the door open was because I had my dog and she slept on her bed right by the sliding doors.
- provide a couple extra blankets. I was up late watching TV and was a bit chilly and there weren't any blankets except those on the beds.
- provide a few board games, cards, dice
My family had a great time at this property and we can't wait to return. Even the small shower won't keep us away.
What a wonderful find...rare vintage home with Dade pine paneling and right on the beach! Private and cosy!
Rented this property for a quick 3 day beach trip, and it worked out very well. Cozy and neat, not fancy but has all the amenities you need, including cable TV and WiFi (WiFi was good in the unit, not reliable when on the deck). The shower stall in the bathroom is small, but there's an outdoor shower which we used most of the time. A/C worked well, and there's a laundry room on the property which we didn't use but could be good during a longer stay. The unit is on the beach side of a busy road but we didn't notice road noise. You can just see the ocean from the deck, and a walkway goes past another structure on the same lot to get to the beach, it takes about 30 seconds. Deck faces the ocean and is not covered so gets full sun until afternoon; was nice and fully shaded by 4 or 5 PM. The location was very good, with a Publix grocery store a mile or so away, and a short drive across the Intracoastal to St. Augustine. I didn't have to call the manager about any maintenance issues during my stay so can't comment on responsiveness, but prior to my stay I called to ask a question and he was very professional and had the answer right away. I would rent this property again.
The location is ideal and the cottage was clean and cute! The beds and couch were comfortable ! Everyone who visited and stayed there loved it!
We expected at least a beach view, but another structure was in front of us, and the cottage was too far back for a view anyway. The only other negative was the size of the shower. It was truly a challenge, and we used the outdoor shower whenever possible. The beds are comfortable, the house was very clean and well-appointed. The location is very nice - away from the commercial areas.
Our family of four had a great stay at this beach property. The location allows for quick access to the beach. The beach was never crowded. The property was clean and comfortable with all of the basic requirements for a nice stay. The property is not marketed as a luxury experience and there are many small details inside the property that I would change if I were an owner. I suggest that you take five minutes upon arrival to make fun of several architectural goof ups, craftsmanship blunders and other minor house things. After your done, forget them. Focus on the fact that you only need to cross the dune to get to a great beach experience. The only negative worth noting is the fact that this is really a multifamily property. There will be other guests wandering past your window at night or sharing the walk to the beach. This is not a deal breaker, but really the only significant negative to the property. Overall, prepare to enjoy your stay at this beach house.
