About the property

Palo Duro Canyon Escape @ Doves Rest Cabins - ChairLift

This “aerial lift” of a cabin takes its name from the Sky Ride concession that operated at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the 1960’s. The original ride’s abutment is sitting next to this cabin reminiscent of the good-old-by-gone-days when station wagons and family vacations were the norm, and state parks were a favorite place to take them. A series of chairlift seats moved excited park visitors from the canyon floor hundreds of feet above to the top of a mesa that can be seen below from this cabin.

Now, excited ChairLift cabin guests unwind and enjoy magical moments at dawn and dusk when the golden light plays over the soaring cliffs and rock spires of Palo Duro. One of the best features of the fantastic view from this cabin is the interplay of blue sky, brick-red rock and lime-green vegetation. ChairLift is the perfect Palo Duro Escape for the nostalgic and adventuress traveler.

ChairLift was created not just to lodge, but to entertain, engage the eye, and occupy the mind in a stage set rooted in Palo Duro Canyon. Like the canyon itself, ChairLift will take your breath away.

About Jeff Means

Jeff Means is the founder and manager of Doves Rest Cabins. He’s an experienced business professional with a 30+ year career in the hospitality & tourism industry. He has overseen countless event executions and destination/resort marketing efforts. He has personally led groups to over 50-countries and worked closely with resorts and hotels to enhance the guests stay and overall experience. He has traveled to every continent except Antarctica, and almost every state/province in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. During his career he has been to many interesting places such as, the Sahara Desert, Amazon River, Great Barrier Reef, Moscow, Marrakesh, Transylvania, Kenai Peninsula, and the Alps from every country, plus most of the Caribbean Islands. Jeff’s sister lives in New Zealand who he visits occasionally. Interestingly, she has several successful vacation home rentals projects in New Zealand, Australia and Argentina!

Jeff is also an author and accomplished writer. His extensive travels have given him a unique view about the world and the cultures in which we live. His curiosity about world and human origins led him to write his debut novel, Entity of Origin. Jeff was born and raised in Northern California but has called Texas home since 1989.

Why Jeff Means chose Texas

Palo Duro Canyon State Park with its Technicolor walls make for high-desert scenery more commonly seen in southern Utah. It offers more than 30-miles of hiking, mountain-biking and equestrian trails and an additional 1,500 acres set aside for horseback riding. You can bring your own horses so don’t hesitate to ask us about local boarding.

Mountain bikers can experience the best single track in Texas and will enjoy the well maintained five trail heads networking for some 26-miles throughout the canyon ranging from "mild" to "wild" in technical ability - dirt, rocks, river rock, sand, wash-outs, switchbacks, drop-offs and climbs with alternative trail accesses throughout.

During the summer, enjoy a performance of the outdoor musical drama TEXAS. The play, nearing a half-century in its on-going production runs Tuesdays through Sundays, June through August, at the 1,700 seat Pioneer Amphitheater. Watch the stories, struggles and triumphs of early settlers. The family-friendly show has singing, dancing, fireworks and lots of Texas humor.

You'll find ChairLift a place of amazing beauty, quietness and nurturing of soul & spirit. Here is where the Buffalo roamed. It’s Southern & Quahada Comanche (the most powerful & ruthless Indian tribes in American history), Kiowa, and Cheyenne and Arapaho territory. During their time, around 150-years ago, millions of Buffalo made this land their home and Palo Duro Canyon was a retreat for these nomad Indians - hunters of Buffalo. Chief Quanah Parker, the last of the Quahada Comanche warriors, fought the battle of Palo Duro Canyon not more than 20-miles east from Doves Rest in September 1874. It brought an official end to the U.S./Indian wars and the eventual peace that finally allowed settlers to occupy this last remaining freedom-outpost of “uncivilized” land in North America. Now, fun memories and RELAXATION happen here!

What makes this cabin unique

Off the beaten path and outside of mainstream destinations, we’re far from every other place to stay. We deliver an amazing guest experience that is truly authentic Texan, personal, and character-rich. Doves Rest Cabins is truly a unique base camp from which to explore one of the world’s most transformative spot – Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Doves Rest Cabins is ideal for travelers who believe small is beautiful, and see travel not as something one does, but rather identifies it as part of who one is.

If private and quiet surrounded by nature with friendly wildlife nestled in your own little world only a few minutes away to the second largest canyon in America interests you, then you’re in the right place!

Chairlift cabin was perfect, above our expectations, strongly recommend to anyone!

  • 5 of 5

Chairlift Cabin was perfect for our stay at Palo Duro Canyon - it is well furnished, spotless clean and very comfortable. The view from our windows and porch were magnificent and we took many pictures of the: sunrises, sunsets, deer, quail, coyotes, sheep, and hawks. We toured the Palo Duro Canyon the first day and Cap Rock Canyon the second day and followed by a day long hike with a guide on our third day. This was our third trip to Palo Duro and the Doves Rest Cabins are the absolute BEST place we have stayed and we strongly recommend Doves Rest for your next trip to Palo Duro Canyon.

Amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

After a long day of hiking this cabin is the perfect place to relax by the fire and enjoy the view. Waking up to Barbary sheep walking in the front yard was even better. Great place and minutes to the park entrance.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

The property is incredibly close and convenient to Palo Duro. The view is as spectacular as you see in the photos. In fact, the view is more amazing - we saw an incredible sunrise when we were there, just over the canyon, right from the windows of our cabin! We also saw the most amazing wildlife just outside of our cabin!

As others have mentioned, the cabin is well stocked and you only need to bring your food with you. It's roomy and comfortable for our family of four, and there were even dvds and games to choose from during our stay (including kid-friendly ones). We received a complimentary bottle of champagne for us and some cider for the kids (so thoughtful!). There was also a thoughtful holiday decorations up, which made our stay over Christmas festive.

The only negative, and it wasn't enough of a negative to subtract any stars, is that the master bed is too soft for my taste. There is some sort of foam or pillowtop on the mattress which makes it very soft and the pillows are quite soft. If you like soft beds, then this is the bed for you! If you prefer something a bit firmer, then you might struggle.

At the end of the day, no property is perfect and this place was really as close as it gets!

Perfect winter getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect spot to find a "silent night"! The fireplace kept us warm, the provided Christmas tree and complimentary champagne set the mood, and the constant array of wild life viewing through the big picture windows kept us entertained. And I should mention how comfy the beds and pillows at the end of the day. Our day trips down into Palo Duro Canyon delighted us with historical information, hiking, and the best cheeseburgers ever. Thanks to the good people who furnish and check on your satisfaction during your stay at Doves Rest Cabins! A top notch experience even in the cold of winter! Ann from Lubbock, Texas
