This “aerial lift” of a cabin takes its name from the Sky Ride concession that operated at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the 1960’s. The original ride’s abutment is sitting next to this cabin reminiscent of the good-old-by-gone-days when station wagons and family vacations were the norm, and state parks were a favorite place to take them. A series of chairlift seats moved excited park visitors from the canyon floor hundreds of feet above to the top of a mesa that can be seen below from this cabin.
Now, excited ChairLift cabin guests unwind and enjoy magical moments at dawn and dusk when the golden light plays over the soaring cliffs and rock spires of Palo Duro. One of the best features of the fantastic view from this cabin is the interplay of blue sky, brick-red rock and lime-green vegetation. ChairLift is the perfect Palo Duro Escape for the nostalgic and adventuress traveler.
ChairLift was created not just to lodge, but to entertain, engage the eye, and occupy the mind in a stage set rooted in Palo Duro Canyon. Like the canyon itself, ChairLift will take your breath away.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park with its Technicolor walls make for high-desert scenery more commonly seen in southern Utah. It offers more than 30-miles of hiking, mountain-biking and equestrian trails and an additional 1,500 acres set aside for horseback riding. You can bring your own horses so don’t hesitate to ask us about local boarding.
Mountain bikers can experience the best single track in Texas and will enjoy the well maintained five trail heads networking for some 26-miles throughout the canyon ranging from "mild" to "wild" in technical ability - dirt, rocks, river rock, sand, wash-outs, switchbacks, drop-offs and climbs with alternative trail accesses throughout.
During the summer, enjoy a performance of the outdoor musical drama TEXAS. The play, nearing a half-century in its on-going production runs Tuesdays through Sundays, June through August, at the 1,700 seat Pioneer Amphitheater. Watch the stories, struggles and triumphs of early settlers. The family-friendly show has singing, dancing, fireworks and lots of Texas humor.
You'll find ChairLift a place of amazing beauty, quietness and nurturing of soul & spirit. Here is where the Buffalo roamed. It’s Southern & Quahada Comanche (the most powerful & ruthless Indian tribes in American history), Kiowa, and Cheyenne and Arapaho territory. During their time, around 150-years ago, millions of Buffalo made this land their home and Palo Duro Canyon was a retreat for these nomad Indians - hunters of Buffalo. Chief Quanah Parker, the last of the Quahada Comanche warriors, fought the battle of Palo Duro Canyon not more than 20-miles east from Doves Rest in September 1874. It brought an official end to the U.S./Indian wars and the eventual peace that finally allowed settlers to occupy this last remaining freedom-outpost of “uncivilized” land in North America. Now, fun memories and RELAXATION happen here!
Off the beaten path and outside of mainstream destinations, we’re far from every other place to stay. We deliver an amazing guest experience that is truly authentic Texan, personal, and character-rich. Doves Rest Cabins is truly a unique base camp from which to explore one of the world’s most transformative spot – Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Doves Rest Cabins is ideal for travelers who believe small is beautiful, and see travel not as something one does, but rather identifies it as part of who one is.
If private and quiet surrounded by nature with friendly wildlife nestled in your own little world only a few minutes away to the second largest canyon in America interests you, then you’re in the right place!
The cabin is well decorated, with modern appliances, and is very clean. Everything you need plus some nice extras! And it's just a few minutes from the park entrance and not too far from town.
We stayed a week for our honeymoon and couldn't have picked a better place. We loved it, and hated to leave.
We do recommend caution in the state park. Our car was broken into along with at least one other and we found out it happened a few weeks before we were there too.
Five of us stayed at ChairLift Cabin for several days last week. If you are looking for astounding beauty, serenity, eye candy, there really is no other place to stay. ChairLift Cabin is a very quaint cabin that provides a grand view of Palo Duro Canyon right from the front porch. It is the last house on the street, which offers incredible seclusion. You can hike for hours right out the front door. There was a herd of wild sheep that would stroll right in front of the house every single day. The State Park is a very short drive and has numerous hiking/biking trails. Jeff was extremely responsive to my numerous questions. The cabin realistically sleeps 4. Since we were on motorcycles and there were 5 of us, I had a blowup mattress delivered before our arrival and Jeff was very accommodating in that regard. Also, being able to order provisions was such a relief for us! Dick (the property manager) had everything on the grocery list (plus some) there before we arrived. It was an epic place to staycation and we all hope to return soon.
We've stayed in many vacation rentals across the US and Europe. Doves Rest was the best one. The cabin was amazing. If anything, better than the pictures. Plus the owner has clearly put a lot of thought into making rentals easy. Everything you need is provided, from bed linens to towels to coffee. And everything is well-labeled so you know the house rules. Best of all, the view is astonishing and hiking trails start from the from porch. We saw foxes and mountain goats from the cabin.
Wonderful small 'chalet' with stupendous views and the comforts that one needs. A couple of things, if they were provided, would make it perfect. The first would be simple written directions for the coffee machine (a greater assortment of coffee types would also help). The second would be simple written directions for the entertainment center. The third would be simple written indications for the outside gas grill. Would love to come back for a week at a 'bad' time of year to simply write....away from everyone!
We enjoyed our vacation to Doves Rest Cabins! It is perfect location to Palo Duro Park! Literally like 5 minutes from entrance so it makes it perfect to come back to cabin for meals. Park entry fee is $5/person/day unless you have a state park pass. Various trails to hike, bike, ride while staying here!
The cabin is a 2 bedroom with amazing views of the canyon! We stayed in the Chairlift cabin but others are available through same rental place. We would absolutely stay here again! It was perfect size and views could not be beat! We enjoyed grilling steaks and enjoying a cocktail on the porch after a day of hiking. 😊
Our only cons (which would in NO way prevent us from staying just opportunities to improve):
No fans in rooms-I prefer a fan in room at night to help with cooling while also drowning out my snoring husband! 😂
No dresser in rooms-I prefer to unpack when on vacation for convenience but as it happens our friends did not join so we sprawled out on the extra room 😉
Again, those small cons are def not a deterrent of us staying here in the future! We have already talked with friends to return and try one of the hot tub options with Doves Rest Cabins!
Recommend going to Palo Duro riding stables if you are interested in doing horse back riding in the canyon! We thoroughly enjoyed this tour!
