About the property

Palo Duro Canyon Escape @ Doves Rest Cabins - ChairLift

This “aerial lift” of a cabin takes its name from the Sky Ride concession that operated at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the 1960’s. The original ride’s abutment is sitting next to this cabin reminiscent of the good-old-by-gone-days when station wagons and family vacations were the norm, and state parks were a favorite place to take them. A series of chairlift seats moved excited park visitors from the canyon floor hundreds of feet above to the top of a mesa that can be seen below from this cabin.

Now, excited ChairLift cabin guests unwind and enjoy magical moments at dawn and dusk when the golden light plays over the soaring cliffs and rock spires of Palo Duro. One of the best features of the fantastic view from this cabin is the interplay of blue sky, brick-red rock and lime-green vegetation. ChairLift is the perfect Palo Duro Escape for the nostalgic and adventuress traveler.

ChairLift was created not just to lodge, but to entertain, engage the eye, and occupy the mind in a stage set rooted in Palo Duro Canyon. Like the canyon itself, ChairLift will take your breath away.

Why Jeff Means chose Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon State Park with its Technicolor walls make for high-desert scenery more commonly seen in southern Utah. It offers more than 30-miles of hiking, mountain-biking and equestrian trails and an additional 1,500 acres set aside for horseback riding. You can bring your own horses so don’t hesitate to ask us about local boarding.

Mountain bikers can experience the best single track in Texas and will enjoy the well maintained five trail heads networking for some 26-miles throughout the canyon ranging from "mild" to "wild" in technical ability - dirt, rocks, river rock, sand, wash-outs, switchbacks, drop-offs and climbs with alternative trail accesses throughout.

During the summer, enjoy a performance of the outdoor musical drama TEXAS. The play, nearing a half-century in its on-going production runs Tuesdays through Sundays, June through August, at the 1,700 seat Pioneer Amphitheater. Watch the stories, struggles and triumphs of early settlers. The family-friendly show has singing, dancing, fireworks and lots of Texas humor.

You'll find ChairLift a place of amazing beauty, quietness and nurturing of soul & spirit. Here is where the Buffalo roamed. It’s Southern & Quahada Comanche (the most powerful & ruthless Indian tribes in American history), Kiowa, and Cheyenne and Arapaho territory. During their time, around 150-years ago, millions of Buffalo made this land their home and Palo Duro Canyon was a retreat for these nomad Indians - hunters of Buffalo. Chief Quanah Parker, the last of the Quahada Comanche warriors, fought the battle of Palo Duro Canyon not more than 20-miles east from Doves Rest in September 1874. It brought an official end to the U.S./Indian wars and the eventual peace that finally allowed settlers to occupy this last remaining freedom-outpost of “uncivilized” land in North America. Now, fun memories and RELAXATION happen here!

Stayed at the chairlift cabin in Oct of 2017.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at the chairlift cabin with another couple for 3 nights. The stay was fantastic. Very scenic setting with great sun rises and very quite peaceful evenings. If your looking for a relaxing outdoor experience with all the amenities of modern living this is the place. The cabin is well furnished and comfortable and the great outdoors can be enjoyed from the porch. Don't miss the drive thru the canyon. Also had about 30 Barbary sheep graze by the cabin on two afternoons. Coyotes singing in the morning and evening just a pleasant peaceful vacation and you don't have to be an avid outdoorsman to enjoy.

Fantastic view and top notch accommodations!

  • 5 of 5

Well worth the drive and the expense to stay here! We usually vacation in the Texas hill country or the coast, but this was well worth the visit! Cabin is cozy and comfortable with all the amenities. The view was just amazing and even better than the pictures! We really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of this place, not to mention the view and the wildlife. Hope to return and bring the whole family!

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful sunrises/sunsets. Location perfect and only a quick trip to the Canyon/Visitors Center. So enjoyed riding through the Canyon — good time to come with good weather and small number of people. Saw no wildlife😞? but saw evidence of them with footprints and scat. Appreciated the well stocked kitchen, the surprise in the frig, and the comfy couch with that great view of the Canyon. The king bed was very high off the floor with no aid to crawl into it. Would have appreciated a stair. Queen bed comfy. Closets need to be cleaned out and a luggage rack placed in each one of them so there’s a place for suitcases other than the floor. No place to sit in the bedrooms except for the bed although I did find two fold up chairs in the closet. No drawers for putting clothes. Some problem with the TVs but was promptly addressed. Lots of flies and mosquitoes. Some spray and outside candle brought second day by manager to help stave off the insects. Needs a few improvements but all in all a good place to stay.

Everything was perfect! I honestly can't say one negative thing.

  • 5 of 5

This was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. We stayed 4 days and 3 nights. We stayed in the Chairlift cabin. It was cozy, clean, and comfortable. It had everything we needed and more. If you're looking for a place for peace, beauty, and a way to disconnect from everyday stress I highly recommend Doves Rest. Sitting on the patio watching the sunrises and drinking coffee were magical. We spent 4 hours driving through the canyon. The views are breathtaking. We will definitely return.
