About Owner/ Manager

I was born in Interlaken on Cayuga Lake. I studied physical education and lived in 10 different states over 30 years until I returned to the Finger Lakes in 2007.

Am I happy to be back home? "Yes, there is no place like it!!"

Tom

I was born in the Netherlands and lived in England and South Africa before moving to the USA in 2006. I studied biodynamic agriculture and specialized in cheese making.

I have been living in the Finger Lakes since June 2013 and love the wide variety of activities that this region has to offer.

I met Tom soon after moving here. We enjoy the natural beauty that we are surrounded with on a daily basis and we are happy to be able to share this wealth with other people.

Inez

Owner/ Manager purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Owner/ Manager chose Finger Lakes

We fell in love with this property which dates from 1846 the moment we saw it on line. We love the beautiful peaceful surroundings yet are only a 12 minute drive away from everything downtown Ithaca has to offer. Ithaca has an international vibe due to Cornell and Ithaca College and there are sooo many things to do and enjoy in the local surroundings!!

What makes this cottage unique

A GREAT spot for nature lovers:We are surrounded by nature and keep seeing new bird species and other wild life.

Some days ago people were having breakfast on the deck and saw a coyote ambling past.

We are developing a management plan for the 15 acre property to turn it into a diversified wild life conservancy which will hopefully give shelter to a wide range of flora and fauna.

We have just finished digging a 1/2 acre pond (July 2015) and hope to create a natural balance between fish and aquatic plants (and the occasional dog…..)

We live in the Manor House (Enfield Manor) which is also situated on this property. It dates from 1846 and we have turned it into a small B&B offering two double rooms. (See our website ( So if you want to bring more friends and/or family we can put them up…..

Perfect Place to Stay in Ithaca

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week at Mallard Cottage in August and couldn't ask for a better experience. The cottage is the perfect size for two people. The place was clean and comfortable with a spectacular view from the porch. The hosts are right next door and were the perfect combination of being helpful (offering to clean the cottage mid-stay, recommending things to do, helping with a power outage, letting us use their clothesline) but also very respectful of our privacy. The place is located on a quiet road just a few miles from Robert H. Treman park. If you like to hike and bike Buttermilk Falls, Connecticut Hill and the lakes are all just a short drive away. Downtown Ithaca is also very close as is Cayuga lake. Can't wait to go back!

Not the best for guests' dogs

  • 3 of 5

Although the setting was very quaint & tiny guest house cute/clean, it was right next to the owners B&B offering little privacy especially from their two large dogs sharing the same yard. While this was disclosed, we didn't realize their dogs would be outside from early morning to evening unleashed & so close to the rental. Their dogs would not give our dogs any space to explore or go potty, which was intimating to our dogs. We couldn't even enjoy the deck most of the time because their dogs were always near by which caused both sets of dogs to start barking. It became so problematic that the owner asked us to text her each time we let our dogs out so she could rally their dogs to a kennel temporarily. Even when we weren't outside, we had to keep all the blinds closed 24/7 to avoid our dogs getting stressed because their dogs were always in view.

In addition, besides the bed, there were only two chairs to 'lounge' on & the owners didn't allow dogs on furniture. We also were told to take our dogs on the edge of the property as not to disturb their B&B guests, but we would often hear their dogs bark, even in the early AM. Our dogs were always leashed & only barked when their dogs came around. One of the dogs was prone to jumping & we were instructed to discipline if needed. Overall much of our disappointment was with the dog situation.

Some other issues during our stay: they had WIFI issues that we had to report because we were able to stream from our devices midweek. The owner did call their ISP, and this was resolved the last day we were there. There were some other oddities that I don't have room to mention here but overall my husband & I (& our dogs) never felt truly relaxed during our stay. We are private, quiet people who take great care of our dogs & always leave any rental we stay spotless. This was our first vacation since I got diagnosed with a critical health issue & we needed much R&R. Unfortunately it was not the best situation for us & our dogs.

Owner's Response: Dear Deborah Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are truly sorry to read that you were not satisfied with your stay at Mallard Cottage. We are well aware that people come here to relax and it is our fervent wish to see them leave relaxed and rejuvenated (including their pets!) Tom and I reviewed your stay in detail, including the text communication between us and concluded that we responded to your various requests in a proper and efficient manner. This includes giving your dogs the space they needed to be outside as well as the WIFI repair which was beyond our control as one of the suppliers towers got damaged. It was however repaired on the same day while you were on an outing, in time for you to stream movies on your last evening as requested. Grievances that are communicated several weeks after your departure are unfortunately hard to deal with; We would have been ever so happy to have heard about them during your stay so we could have resolved them in an amicable manner. We are in agreement that Mallard Cottage was perhaps not suitable for you and your 4 little dogs, especially as one of them was petrified of strangers and other dogs. Our loving Golden Retrievers would have loved to play with them! We hope that your health issues will soon be in the past and trust that in the future you will find suitable holiday accommodation that meets your expectations. Regards, Inez and Tom.

lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Mallard cottage. It's a small, recently renovated guesthouse built off the side of the main house on the property, which is a small bed and breakfast. The hosts were helpful, relaxed, and welcoming. The cottage was clean, bright, and very well appointed, with a nice kitchen and grill outside on the deck. It's very comfortable for two people. The property is lovely, on a quiet road with nice views. Importantly for us, it's a very dog friendly rental, and our dog had a great time running around outside. Since the outdoor space is shared, it will probably work best for dogs who are relatively sociable. The location is about a 15 min drive from downtown Ithaca and only a mile or so down the road from a lovely state park with a great (and short) scenic hike and swimming.

Beautiful weekend honeymoon spot

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, peaceful location with an awesome view. My husband and I were married 5 minutes away at Robert H. Treman State Park and we spent 3 nights at the cottage. Very comfortable for 2 people. It's in a very nice quiet location but is only 15 minutes away from downtown Ithaca. The owners were great to work with and very friendly. We absolutely loved it and we plan on going back! We HIGHLY recommend staying here.

wonderful relaxing place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfectly appointed! it had everything we needed. we cooked in 2 times. the kitchen is especially attention to detail. they have a grill and a fabulous view from the deck. The hosts were wonderful, friendly and very accommodating! Inez told us of several places that were must see. She was very helpful guiding us to gorgeous hikes and a little town called Trumansburg (sp?) that we went to twice! Liked it way better than Ithaca!

we hope to go back and stay here again. there is so much hiking and things to do and see that we only scratched the surface!

Go and Enjoy!

Only 7 miles from downtown Ithaca, 10 miles from Trumansburg and 15 miles from Watkins Glen.

Conveniently located between Cayuga and Senaca lake with its abundance of wineries which, besides offering wine tasting also have live music and dancing during weekends.

11/2 miles from the upper entrance of Robert Treman Park with its beautiful gorge, waterfalls and outdoor swimming pool.

The Finger Lakes Trail runs just below the property.

A local Art trail and Cheese trail and the two wine trails.

Plenty of opportunities for shopping, live theatre, lake cruises, hiking, biking, live bands, scenic road trips to quaint little towns…….

Our favorite way to spend a day? Go for a hike in Robert Treman Park, have coffee in downtown Ithaca, go to Watkins Glen for supper and watch the sunset from the deck of one of the wineries while listening to live music. And when I'm lucky Tom will even invite me to dance......
