About the property

Charming Hawaiian Style Beach House

[HI Tax ID TA/GE-064-855-0400-01] Located on the eastern most tip of the Big Island, The Gecko House is perfect as your base camp to experience all the adventure the Big Island has to offer. Even if you never leave the quiet beach community of Kapoho Vacationland, you can lose yourself in the underwater world of the Wai O’Pae tide pools and Lagoon, which boast some of the best snorkeling on the Island in a federally protected Marine Preserve. Surround yourself with fresh air, sunshine and spectacular natural beauty.

The Gecko House is a charming Hawaiian style beach house located 300 steps from the ocean with several points of easy water access and safe swimming. It sleeps 6 comfortably and works well for families with children or several couples. The Master bedroom has a king size bed and en suite. A hallway bathroom serves additional guests. The first Guest bedroom has two twin beds with excellent quality mattresses that are perfect for children or adults. The second Guest bedroom has a Queen size bed. Both guest bed rooms have access to the lanai. All bedding and linens are brand new. Let the sound of the ocean lull you to sleep, once you have gone for an evening walk under the stars. I mean STARS!

Family meals are a breeze with the fully equipped kitchen, including all appliances, and a dishwasher and garbage disposal for easy clean-up. The dining room seats six guests inside and additional seating at several tables on the 960 square feet of covered lanai. Large sliding doors lead out to the lanai from the dining room and living room allowing gentle ocean breezes to keep the house at a very comfortable temperature even on hot summer days. Beautiful palm trees and lush tropical plants surround the property.

If you decide to explore the Island, which I highly recommend doing, our location is perfect for setting out on your adventure. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour away. Visit Kilauea Caldera, the most active volcano on earth. This is an educational excursion for adults and children alike. Hilo is less than an hour away. The Hilo Market on Saturday’s will immerse you in the sights, sounds, and smells of the Island culture. North of Hilo you will find some of the most amazing “views” on earth. Slip off the highway onto the “4 Mile Scenic Drive” and up the Hamakua coast. Keep winding your way north, around or go up and over the Island to the Kona (west) side. Every turn brings a new experience, another natural wonder, one more rainbow. In January the whales return to the warm Hawaiian waters with their young. They can easily be seen from shore. Get your camera ready. Head to South Point and hike the Ka’u dessert to Green Sand Beach. North, south, east or west, beauty abounds. Enjoy.

Lovely and relaxing jungle home for family with young kids

  • 5 of 5

What a fabulous time we had at The Gecko House! We are missing all the sights, sounds, and smells, and have had to incorporate a nighttime recording of the Puna jungle frogs, birds, and bugs into our nighttime routine for our daughters here at home, as they miss the sounds lulling them to sleep each night.

The home is lovely - very well-kept, with a gorgeous manicured yard surrounding it. It was the prettiest home in the neighborhood, based on our meanderings. It is close enough to hear the sound of the waves and to walk down the street to the Tide Pools. The wraparound lanai made for peaceful evenings, eating outside and watching our young daughters dance around and catch geckos. It rained nearly the whole time we were there (which we heard was quite unusual) but we still snorkeled the incredible Pools and explored other parts of Puna and Hilo. It is about 15 minutes to Pahoa, with some delicious restaurants and colorful people-watching. We stocked up on breakfast and lunch foods to make at The Gecko House, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make nice meals and smoothies. It was also an easy drive to Hilo (about 40 minutes away) and we really enjoyed some city experience mixed in with the relaxing country feel of Puna.

We highly recommend The Gecko House for folks with kids. They were very happy in the twin beds, while we enjoyed the super comfy master bed next to the windows (did I mention the jungle lullaby each night? :) ). We can't wait to go back next summer. Mahalo for a fabulous vacation getaway!

Best so far

  • 4 of 5

Down through the years, we've stayed in Kapopo quite a few times always in vacation rentals. Gecko house has been the best. It is close to the tidepools, and the house is airy, very clean, attractively furnished and intelligently/thoughtfully arranged with everything you need.

Amazing jungle retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Gecko House is set is an oasis of trees, tidal pools, and beautiful tropical plants. Nights there are filled with the magical sounds of the rainforest... Gecko’s, frogs, etc. we feared for mosquitos but barely encountered any during our stay. The house had all the conveniences we needed.... lots of towels, shower gel, soap, lots of seasoning for cooking. We stayed for 3 nights and used the location as a perfect base to explore the volcanoes national park and the Eastern side of the island. The house is walking distance to the lovely kopoho tidal pool and is a short 1-2 miles to champagne pond, Ahalanui Park (incredible volcanic heated pond with fish), the Lava Tree Monument. The Volcanoes National Park is about an hour away. We actually went twice, once to see the Lava glow in the evening, once to hike the crater in the morning. If you can, add on a 1/2 day trip to the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach before or after the volcano national park. It’s about 1/2 hour past the volcanoes national park entrance and is the most amazing black sand beach (and with sea turtles as an added bonus.) Though the lava was not flowing to the ocean while we stayed, the House would have been a great location to access the Lava Boat Tours. The nearby supermarket in Pahoa was more than sufficient and convenient for our grocery needs. Anyhow, don’t think twice about enjoying a real getaway at the Gecko House.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at Gecko House. So glad you were able to experience much of what the East side of the Big Island has to offer. But, there is so much more to see. We wish you could have stayed longer. Come back anytime.

Loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect vacation get away! The house had plenty of room for all six adults and the kitchen was larger than the pictures show and was very well stocked. We absolutely loved the lanai and spent a lot of time hanging out there. It was a couple blocks to walk to the tide pools which we did every morning for the sunrise. Beautiful! The real gem, though, was the lagoon for snorkeling. Saw a wonderful array of tropical fish including a moray eel and snowflake eel! Great location for exploring the island!

Gorgeous house in an amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Gecko House! It is a very sweet home- beautifully decorated and in perfect condition. It had everything we needed and the location is amazing too! We walked to the tide pools to snorkel every day, and saw so many amazing fish and beautiful corals- we even saw an octopus, my favorite! The neighborhood is really nice, and Pahoa is a short drive away with a nice grocery store and anything else you might need during your stay. Debi (the owner) was great to work with and communicated with us to help make our stay go smoothly. When we come back to this area we will definitely stay at the Gecko House again!

Great house, great location, great owners--outstanding experience in every way!

  • 5 of 5

The house itself exceeded our expectations--it is not only attractive and comfortable (better than pictures), but very well supplied--from the usual to less common items like snorkeling gear and even hydrogen peroxide for lava or coral scrapes! The owners clearly have thought about guests' possible needs and respond quickly (and cheerfully) to questions.

We spent three full months at Gecko House and found it fantastic--the lanai is the best in the neighbourhood with great trade winds, lots of space, and wonderful views. The neighborhood itself (Kapoho Vactionland) is lovely, walkable, and friendly. From there, it's also easy to drive to several nearby parks, into Pahoa or Hilo, to Volcano National Park, or explore other parts of the amazing big island.

Staying at Gecko House made this the best summer of our lives--we can't recommend it (and the wonderful owners) highly enough!
