|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
Come have a relaxing getaway with family or friends at our little house on a hill -just an hour from the city, or an easy train ride to the Cold Spring or Beacon train stops. Explore our 11 acres of woodland (wear boots, its a hike) and then kick back in our shaded sitting areas, or in the comfortable living room. Throw some food on the grill and enjoy a meal on the patio. Or whip up something special in the newly renovated kitchen with high end appliances and fully stocked ware. Sleeping in any of the four contemporary bedrooms shouldn't be a problem on this property; its nice and quiet, and dark -you'll actually see stars! And of course no relaxing, or activity, is complete without freshening up; the house has two bathrooms, one with a spacious shower and one in the finished basement with a Jacuzzi tub.
Take the exploring off the property to an area full of diverse activities. Hiking, biking, birding, and swimming at the lake beach in beautiful Fahnestock State Park -just minutes away. Go antiquing, or just spend the day on historic Main Street, in Cold Spring. Get inspired by fabulous art at Dia:Beacon and Stormking, both a quick drive. Pick your own fruit and vegitables, apples the obvious fall favorite, from one of the many farms (Fishkill Farms's apples cider doughnuts can't be beat). And this is only a taste of all that the Hudson Valley has to offer, much more hiking and biking, kayaking, golf, restaurants, and theater there to be discovered.
The house has free WiFi so you'll have every opportunity to plan a perfect getaway. And stream a movie when its time to put the feet up.
This review is geared to families with young children (our profile), but the place is wonderful even for those without kids for different reasons (drinking wine at night on the patio and seeing stars etc.)!
Three families (each with one or two kids under the age of 4), stayed at this beautiful home over a weekend in July. The house has a very nice large living area and outdoor space so the kids could run around and it felt very safe/childproofed (only one set of stairs to worry about for the youngest in the group). The kitchen is large for communal cooking and we did barbeque one afternoon also (the grill was easy to use). Although the bedrooms are relatively small, there was enough space for two adults plus a small crib in each room and because they were uncluttered (simple decor) they felt spacious enough. The family with two kids took the two slightly smaller rooms (one for parents and one for kids), and those with one kid each, the two slightly larger rooms.
Liz was available to answer questions (on the temperature since there is central air for example - to note the downstairs floor was a bit cold) and the location is great for families. We went to two farms 15-20mins away (Fishkill Farms - to pick vegetables and fruit and Sprout Creek farm - to see the animals) and went swimming in the lake 5mins away, so even though we had intended to go to Beacon and the DIA, there was plenty to do close by so we could minimize the time in the car.
A group of 8 stayed MDW at the house, and we had a wonderful time. The property is beautiful, very secluded. Nice hiking nearby as well as Canope lake. We enjoyed large meals together indoor and out, the kitchen and grill are perfect for that. We played yard games and watched movies in the evening in the comfortable living room. Bedrooms were comfortable, two on the main level don't have AC, sleep with doors open and fans on to get some circulation. Nice bathrooms, and washer/dryer. Couldn't have felt more at home.
We stayed for Mother's Day weekend. My husband and I and our 3 adult children, ages mid 20's and 31. The house and property is fantastic. Very roomy, and comfy. Awesome short walk to the old Appalachian Trail. Downtown Cold Spring is not to be missed. I would also go to New Paltz. I would definitely stay in this house again.
Fantastic house, everything described and picture was accurate. We brought our 3 young adult kids for Mother's Day weekend. Lots of room for us, great location. We hiked the old Appalacian Trail which you can walk to from the house, so convenient. Great house, kitchen was perfect for family cooking. Beds were super comfy, house is newly renovated. I highly recommend this place.
The house is newly renovated and beautiful. It is quiet and quite secluded - on a small road just off the Taconic. The stores and restaurants are about a 15 minutes drive away, so it's a good spot if you are looking to escape and spend some time in the quiet outdoors. The layout is really conducive to socializing with big groups. There's an open kitchen, a big dining table and a very comfortable living room with a big flat screen TV. The house is also well equipped for little ones. We brought our toddler and were able to use the house pack and play and booster seat. We stayed here on a rainy weekend so we weren't able to enjoy the nearby hiking trails - but look forward to doing so on a future visit!
My husband and I with our two very small children and my parents had a terrific week's stay at this house. The house itself is clean, bright, spacious, comfortable and well stocked with anything you might need for your stay, from tons of towels to beach supplies to grilling and kitchen supplies of all kinds, which made it feel much more like a home away from home. The house has a lovely backyard but my favorite place was the patio that boasts gorgeous afternoon and evening light over nearby trees and rolling hills in the distance. Great place to enjoy a glass of wine and maybe spot a hummingbird.
There is also no shortage of attractions close by, some of which we knew about and some we discovered during the stay. Five minutes away is the Canopus Lake beach in Fahnestock park, which is an impeccably clean and delightful place to get some sun or rent a boat or splash around with kids in shallow warm water. Off to the side right off the beach is a moderate hiking trail that connects with the Appalachian Trail, both beautiful. Just as close is a Chinese Buddhist monastery with lovely grounds and the biggest Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere. A little further are Beacon and Cold Spring and a little further still though totally worth it is Storm King, a phenomenal outdoor sculpture park.
A couple of other notes about the house. As a one level with a gated off basement and a clean, contemporary aesthetic, it is great for families looking for a close to babyproof environment away from home -- although the hilly landscape of the yard does require some handholding. At the same time, because it boasts four bedrooms with at least double beds, it's a comfortable getaway for groups with more adults, something I always struggled to find when looking for places to go with friends who are couples and no one wanted to sleep in a bunk bed!
Last but not least, the owners are very responsive and helpful. Overall, I hearily recommend this house for a getaway in upstate NY.
Fahnestock State Park is located only 4 miles away and offers a wide variety of activities.
Numerous hiking trails and lake activities are within a short drive of the house.
Beacon is located within 20 miles from the house where you will find numerous art galleries and of course, Dia Beacon.
Stormking Arts center is just across the river.
Cold Spring's main street with filled with lots of small shops. Stormville market is within 8 miles.
