About Liz and Earl Ashurst

I am an lllinois girl who came to love the mountains after meeting my love at BYU (a Utah boy) lo many years ago. It has been his dream to own a piece of a mountain all our married life. We have moved around quite a bit and now reside in Texas. Our 6 children (and 19 grandchildren) are scattered around the country. We have had to rent a facility to all be together. We have worked hard to make this home a place where we can all be together. With the ''bunk house' finished above the garage, we finally have that.

Liz and Earl Ashurst purchased this house in 2015

Why Liz and Earl Ashurst chose Utah

Driving up Provo Canyon one day with my son who lives in Midway, I asked him to turn off at the sign that said Wallsburg. We had driven past it many times and wondered what was there. We were amazed at this wonderful valley so close to so much and yet so off the beaten path. We zeroed in on an amazing A-frame nestled up on the bench. My husband and I decided it would be the perfect gathering spot our family and are anxious to share it with others. With main house that sleeps 17 and (in summer and Fall) the unheated bunkhouse that sleeps 15 as an add on, a group of 32 can be easily accommodated.

What makes this house unique

The location is what hooked us on it. Close to Provo and Orem in one direction, almost across the road from Deer Creek Reservoir and the Provo River; minutes from ski resorts and the Midway/Heber attractions.

We love the views from the 2 story 'A' window, the log staircase in the great room and the huge deck.

Most of all we love hearing our granchildren giggling under the quilts in the bunk beds after a family meal at the amazing tables my husband made!

Notes:
This is a very comfortable house to enjoy year round. Go to the reservoir in the summer, enjoy snow sports in the winter or just stay 'home' and relax. The house is NOT air conditioned but if you open up the windows when the sun goes down, it will cool off quickly on a hot day and you will find yourself closing the windows before long.

Nice area although it was buryed in snow!

  • 3 of 5

The listing and pictures were accurate for the house. I talked to the owner about the house being warm enough for our daughter-in-law before we booked and they indicated it stayed warm. They also warned us about the driveway being slick or snow packed if they had recent snow, there was snow but we did not have a problem with the driveway. The house was clean.

We expected the snow, that was appealing, what we did not expect was a cold house when we got there. Granted it was -5 deg. F on the car readouts when we pulled in around 6:00 PM but we did have to wear heavy sweaters or even coats until time for bed. The thermostat on the bottom floor was readings 50 deg., that is as low as it goes. We got all the electric heaters, gas fireplace, and the pellet stove going and the next day was not to bad. (The outside temperature never did get over 10 deg. during the day) We had a problem with the cook stove, bottom heating element went bad when we started it but the second oven worked so we were able to get the cooking done. Other than the cold when we arrived the house was good, enjoyed the different levels and the bunk beds for the grandchildren. Games and toys for the children also were a hit. Also enjoyed the family style tables in the dining area. We used the house as a base, went to Midway to the Ice Castle and down to Prove for a little shopping but mostly we enjoyed a late Christmas with the family and our oldest grandchild had her 9th birthday while we were there so we had a party! I'm not sure if we would stay here again in the winter, a spring or fall trip where you could enjoy the yard; maybe.

Owner's Response: With the extraordinarily cold weather, we should have sent someone to turn the heat up for you. We do regret that and apologize. The stove problem was a new one and the stove was replaced before the next weekend when another group arrived.

Wonderful place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much at this remote location. The driveway was great for sledding. The house was very comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. There were even toys for our little ones. The view from the living room was beautiful. Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend getaway!

Perfect for our family!

  • 4 of 5

We were all very pleased with this rental. We have stayed in other VRBO's and this one was the best! So very well stocked with dishes, supplies etc. Having an extra refrigerator was a plus as well as the large laundry room. Plenty of small appliances and serving equipment made it just right for our large Thanksgiving celebration. It was a perfect fit for our family of 17 - 8 adults and 9 children. The size, amenities and location helped make our reunion enjoyable. Everyone said they wanted to return.

Annual Family Reunion!

  • 4 of 5

My family had a great time. There was plenty of room for everything. We have been having our family reunion every fall about this time for 30 years or so. We always have to much fun being together with the cousins able to be together and play.

Thank you for allowing us to rent your home do help make our reunion special and fun!

The cabin was well described. I just wish there were a larger room where we could all gather together and play games. The eating area was great with plenty of room.

The unit was clean and well stocked.

We stayed at the property from October 19 to the 23rd. My husband passed away a few years ago. This reunion is definitely something we need to continue. The family grows closer together spending quality time.

I definitely will consider going there again!

The cabin and property worked well for our trip, the only negative--misunderstandings on the cost!

  • 4 of 5

We had a youth activity slash family reunion at the Ashurst cabin and the property worked almost perfectly for our needs. There was a $450 mis-understanding on the cost of the bunkhouse, which came as pretty big surprise. The bunkhouse was still under construction when the inital conversations were had, and we thought there was a mutual understanding about the use of the bunkhouse. We were disappointed to find out, when it was too late, that there was going to be a big increase in price. The owners acquiesced by $150 from what they initially demanded--which we appreciated. But were pretty hard-lined about the matter--in my opinion. That was the only notable negative about our experiance. I am sure that now the bunkhouse is finished and part of property, that those mis-understandings won't happen again.

The cabin was clean, well-stocked, and comfortable. Beautiful surroundings and a good location for our plans. I would reccomend some blinds downstairs. The sun comes glaring through those windows in the morning, and it would be nice to blind them.

Lovely, comfortable home away from the city

  • 5 of 5

I rented this house with 3 other families for a reunion. It was the perfect escape to relax and just enjoy the quietness of the country. The house was very well laid out and fit all of our families (7 adults and 9 children) comfortably. The kids loved the trampoline and outdoor playset and were able to spend most of the day outside. There were also plenty of toys to play with indoors. There were large areas in the dining room, living room and den for the adults to hang out and plenty of deck chairs to sit outside.

Overall, we had a wonderful stay, and I would highly recommend renting this house if you're looking to have a relaxing, peaceful time with friends or family.
