Set in 5 acres of stunning grounds on Portugal’s unspoilt Western Algarve, Quinta santo Phunurius is a spectacular country retreat consisting of an elegant colonial-style 5 bedroom villa and 3 cottages plus spacious Studio.
Sharing the use of over 12,000 sq mts of gardens with numerous shady palm and Norfolk Pine tress, fish ponds, lawns and large swimming pool, these unique holiday homes are available separately or together.
The Quinta is within 15-20 minutes walk of historic Lagos, a bustling market town and charming resort with all facilities. The nearest large sandy beach is about the same distance away, with a vast choice of golden beaches and palm fringed romantic coves a short drive away.
The nearest large international supermarket is just 3 minutes walk from the Quinta gates.
Open all year, with substantial long term winter discounts.
I am British but have lived here in the Algarve since 1999, when I bought the Quinta. Before that I lived in London for 13 years, so moving here was quite a change!
I live in a corner of the Quinta with my dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, geese and goats. I am available to give any advice regarding beaches, restaurants, trips, etc .
Leighton Crook purchased this villa in 1999
I had taken a holiday in Lagos and found both the town and the surrounding area very beautiful. When I decided to move here, I only looked at two properties. The Quinta was the 2nd one and I knew there was no need to look any further. It was the end of February 1998, the temperature was 20c and the gardens were full of blooms including masses of freesias in the lawns. The decision was made there and then!
The gardens are huge and especially during what passes for winter in these parts, and spring, are full of colour and scents. The scene from the balcony of the five bedroom villa across the gardens was spectacular, with the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.
On the ground floor, you can feel as though you are away from it all, in the countryside, yet the historic town centre is only 15 mins by foot and the supermarket just around the corner. I felt it had the bet of both worlds.
Although the villa and cottages are not modern, I felt they were full of character and charm and felt authentic.
Winter in the Algarve
If you are looking for a vibrant nightlife, bustling streets and busy, baking beaches – the Algarve in the winter is not for you.
If however, you want mild hazy sunshine, almost deserted beaches, spectacular cliff top walks, sleepy streets, verdant countryside and clear star lit nights by a real log fire, then we have just what you are looking for.
The average temperature in the coolest months – December and January – is a plea sent 17ºc. Although the sun is not guaranteed in the winter months, with an average of 300 days sunshine a year, there is more chance you will get it than not.
The streets and beaches are quiet. The best restaurants are still open, a few bars and quiet cafés. Go off the beaten track and you can find yourself almost alone in paradise. From mid January onwards, our spring arrives with first the almond blossom and then an abundance of flowers including wisteria, wild freesias and fragrant rock roses that fill the air with perfume if you go for a spectacular cliff walk.
The evenings and nights can be chilly (well, by our standards!) so we have wood burning stoves or open fires in each of the properties. Enjoy a glass of robust Portuguese red wine by your own fire, looking out at the clear skies and counting the stars.
Fantastic. Cosy little studio and beautiful gardens and pool virtually to ourselves all week. Weather specially arranged by Leighton (29 degrees on our first day!) who was also friendly, informative and helpful. Beach, supermarket and town all within walking distance. Looking forward to going back
We stayed in one of the cottages for a week and were very happy with it
and the surrounding gardens.
It makes an excellent headquarters and gives you a feeling like being in the countyside, allthough you are in walking distance of the center of Lagos.
Leighton was very helpfull to all our needs and made us feel really welcome.
The cottage was clean and well equipped and provides all you need for self catering.
Not to forget - Leighton stocked up the fridge with a few things before we arrived, Wine, Milk, Bread, Butter and more as well as fresh eggs - laid by the hens which come over and visit you when you`re sat on the patio.
This was our second holiday at at QSP. Last year we rented Casa Jadim, and we enjoyed our holiday so much then that we decided to return with other families as we thought that it would be a perfect site for a large group of friends. We were right-everybody in our party of 15 had a great time. We had enough space and crockery etc in the villa to have dinners together when we chose to, and likewise everybody had their own space to retire to if they needed.
Entertaining teenagers is not always easy, but this property was great for them all. They played table tennis, swam, played ball games in the huge garden, and spent time looking for frogs and terrapins in the ponds. Daily visits by Leighton's friendly dogs and cats were a highlight and the goats appreciated visits and leftover food. There was also very speedy internet access! The kids were able to pop over to the supermarket a couple of minutes away to stock up on crisps and ice creams. A fifteen minute walk got us down to a lovely little beach, and ten to fifteen minutes walk in the other direction took us into town.
The properties were all very clean, and Leighton and his team came in after a week to clean and change sheets and towels. The villa has a big kitchen which is very well equipped, and there is a big table in the dining room or a bbq area on the side balcony which also has a big table. The bedrooms are well spaced and private, the beds are comfy, the views lovely, and the furnishings are quirky and to our taste, but not pristine and modern. The place has a faded glory-not 5 star luxury- which appeals to us as it definitely has character and feels almost colonial!
Leighton and his dogs live on a property next door and are very welcoming. It is a very relaxing place to be. We travelled regularly to the South West coast by car as we enjoy the quieter beaches and walks, but without a car there is a lot to do, and 2 of our party took trains and buses to other parts of the Algarve.
I would certainly recommend this property and cannot wait for my next holiday there.
How can I tell you about paradise, this is everything I have ever dreamed it would be. I stayed in the Colonial Style Villa, all be it older than some of the newer villas out there, but nothing could compare to the privacy, charm, location and Leighton himself. I have been going to Leighton for the past 4 years and make sure I book in the same year for the following year (in case I don't get it). The location is perfect for myself and my family, no more than 15 minute walk to the beautiful village of Lagos, and no more than half how away for surfing.....the teenagers love it. I could go on and on, but believe me try it for yourself!
We have spent our last 3 holidays here and intend to come for many more years. The villa is lovely, beautifully cool in the summer months, the view from the upper balcony is fabulous (where we spend most of our time when not exploring the local beaches) the garden is exceptional and very safe for the children, the pool is great and Leighton is a wonderful host. I have no hesitation in recommending this beautiful villa
My partner and I have been back quite a few times over the past 4 years and our last visit was for 3 months, so we must like the place or else we would not keep going back Its an amazing place to stay. The Gardens are very well maintained, good size swimming pool and the accommodation is fine.
The Manager/Owner, Leighton is very friendly, approachable and always very helpful.
The Quinta is quite close to Lagos town centre and you can walk in and will take about 15/20 minutes. Large Supermarket is just 5 minutes away and has a very good/vast selection of items.
Plenty of places to eat out, wide choice of Bars, plenty of beautiful beaches to walk along or sunbathe.
We have always hired a car through Leighton and found it to be a great asset as their are so many wonderful places to explore along the Algarve. If you do not wish to hire a car, just a short distance away, their is a Holiday Travel Place where you can book Coach Trips.
Being that the Quinta offers various accommodation, we have made some friends via other guests staying their and kept in touch with them. Also, friends of ours have now stayed at the Quinta and are returning this May 2009 for another visit.
We also hope to return at some point during 2009.
Quinta santo Phunurius is within 20 minutes walk of the centre of historic Lagos, with it's pavement cafés, bars and restaurants and the same distance from nearest large sandy beach. There are numerous other beaches within a short drive away and the surfers paradise and rugged, unspoilt west coast is about 30 mins drive away.
The location of the Quinta is peaceful but not remote. It is quiet at night with little passing traffic.
We are only a few minutes drive from the slip road leading to the motorway (Faro airport 45 min) and three minutes walk from the nearest supermarket.
There are four restaurants within 5 minutes walk and then a vast choice of Portuguese and International restaurants, many with al fresco dining, in the historic town centre, less than 20 minutes walk away.La Quinta Santo Phunurius está situada a menos de 20 minutos a pie del centro histórico de Lagos con cafeterías, bares y restaurantes, y a la misma distancia de la playa más cercana.
