We're an international couple living the dream in Kyoto! I'm From the US and my wife is from China and until recently we were both teachers here in Japan. Now we're working to open a cafe and bar near Kyoto station. We have 2 dogs , Chubby a miniature dachshund and Itoko-chan a shiba inu. We love traveling and all kinds of food and would be happy to introduce you to some of our favorite places here in town and share a meal.
Jesse Schlaud purchased this house in 2014
We felt that the property was over stated. The very small 'balcony' contained the aircon unit and the washing machine leaving no space (and we had to look hard to see the glimpse of the canal!), and the deck 'for relaxing' at the front measured about 1 metre by 2 metres. Guests with small children, or older people, should be warned that the steps to the second level are very steep. The area isn't very good, though access to the nearest rail station helped. The beds had no top sheet only a thick blanket cover to sleep directly under - was it really washed in between guests?? We doubted it.
Attractions other than some local temples, were reached by means of the train.
I would hesitate to recommend this property.
First, please understand that even though this house is located south of Kyoto station that it is as convenient to the key spots in Kyoto as pretty much any place in central Kyoto. JR, Keihan, and the Kyoto subway stations are a quick and easy 10-minute walk, making getting any place in Kyoto or even Kansai very easy.
The house itself is quite nice and spacious for a property in Kyoto. Newly renovated with tatami mats in all rooms except the kitchen. Nice décor as well and a very handy entertainment system with free access to Netflix.
The biggest drawback is that there isn't a sink for washing up. You have to use the kitchen sink and there's no mirror there. The bathroom also is a bit cramped and out-of-date. Also, and this can't really be helped, the immediate neighborhood is a little run down. Some may think it adds to the charm. It didn't really bother us, but it was not ideal.
That being said, the overall location is very nice. In addition to the proximity to train stations, the Kamo River is very nearby and we enjoyed walking our dog along its banks. Also, Tofukuji temple is across the river and its grounds offer beautiful sights, lush greenery, and interesting architecture.
Jesse and his wife met us at the property and he was always very responsive. They were very welcoming of our dog and even provided some free treats for him (and us! milk, juice, snacks, etc.).
I definitely do recommend this place, but just know that it's not perfect.
The owner responds very well to the demands. The house is small but welcoming although cleaning may improve. The bathroom is very small but the living room is very nice. The location is OK, 15 minutes walk from Kyoto Station.
We're located in a quiet residential neighborhood southeast of Kyoto station. The house is bordered on the west by the Pontocho Canal and the Kamogawa River is about 30 meters to the east.
A few 100 meters west of the house near the intersection of Kawaramachi and Kujo streets you'll find a large supermarket, a 24/7 100 Yen store, restaurants, a sento (traditional public bath house).
If you head east and cross the river you'll find the famous Tofukuji Temple, as well as various restaurants, and a small shopping arcade with cafes, bars and a pharmacy.
All of the sights of Kyoto, as well as the main downtown shopping and restaurant districts, and the Gion are only a 5 minute train ride away.
