This place has soul. Small but spacious, old meets new. Enjoy the McKenzie River and all the valley has to offer. Simple modern comforts meet restored and remodeled old highway cabin. Watch the river, eagles, ospreys and boats pass by the house. Covered porch under the house provides river level access and shade in the hot sun, upper deck is at house level for river watching. Easy access to McKenzie River recreation and Eugene/Springfield and Sisters/Bend day trips.
I like people and the earth and love sharing good things! I live in Seattle and this place allows me to stay connected with family in Oregon and the amazing-ness of rural Oregon. I care about environmental protection and social good - owning and renting this place has given me an opportunity to make building material, size and waterfront land management decisions with both pleasure and the earth in mind. Income from this rental supports organizations, programs and work related to equity and education particularly as it relates to youth and teens.
Casey Plank purchased this cabin in 2012
The McKenzie River is a magical place. This property and cabin were dying when it was purchased with the intent to salvage and restore. I grew up in Oregon and the McKenzie Valley has a lot to offer with easy access to both the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon.
Renting this place allows you to make your vacation time and money go to more than simple pleasure. Real estate isn't really my thing, but finding ways to connect with people and the bigger picture are. You will notice photos throughout the rental from all of over the world that run along themes of food, water and environment. Income from this property supports social justice work throughout the northwest as it relates to issues of youth development and access to opportunity. There are only a few places along the river that provide the beauty and closeness to the River itself - I look forward to sharing this with you!
Had everything we needed, especially in the kitchen.
Bed & sofa = comfortable. View of river was superb.
Carpentry was unique, distinctive and furnishings, decor, tasteful.
Owner made the reservation process simple.
Day hikes were easily within reach.
Found ourselves eager to return to our cabin after a long day on the trails.
Would recommend to anyone who loves the call of the Oregon woods and rivers.
This was our second stay at this house - we stayed for a few days last year and came back this year for a two-week visit! We love the inside of this beautiful home and how close it is to the river. The house has gorgeous wood on the inside and big windows, with two nice porches to enjoy the river. Thanks, Casey, for another wonderful stay!
Casey has created a "small space" that seems much larger than it is. The large windows overlooking the river, and the decking outside, make you feel like you are in a big overlook of the McKenzie River. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and waving to the "drifters" on the river. Great job Casey!
We decided to turn the trip to Eugene for our daughter's UoO graduation into a riverside 3-day weekend. The cabin is very, very well trimmed and the furnishings are clean and modern. It has a balanced feel of a Los Angeles hillside home with a riverside cabin, made special with wood and tin treatments, and lots of glass overlooking the river. I enjoyed fishing via the covered downstairs concrete deck.....while my wife and daughter's godmother enjoyed the deck and reading.
My report: I was catching and releasing, using a slinky weight to bottom-bounce the rocks and a single fake pink salmon egg in the mornings and yellow in the afternoon. The fish stack up down river and along the bank. Cast out and let the current take the line straight into them...under the shade tree.
In 9 hours over 2 days I caught and released 15. They are all hatchery fish, clipped adipose fin... fun!
On my last night, just before dark..I had another trout on the line...as it got within 10' of where I unhook them...the line slammed hard (like something big ate the trout). Up popped a river otter with the fish, he barked at me and disappeared...stole it right off the hook. 1st time for me....so cool...
We will be back!
This cabin is wonderful in so many ways. It has been restored with thought and integrity. I found it very clean on arrival and nothing was wanting. The river is right outside the door and there are ample windows to enjoy it (if raining - otherwise the deck is where to be).
The only negative for me is that it is right on Hwy 126 and thus there is traffic noise. It bothered me the first day but I became used to it and found I focused on the river and not the traffic noise.
The location in terms of activities is perfect. I hiked 2 of the days I was there with not a lot of driving required.
The property exceeded expectations. Everything was updated, and utilized high-tech, green technologies. The side facing the river was all windows and displayed stunning views of the river. The deck sticks out over the river (it's almost like being in a tree house sitting over the river). The kitchen was fully equipped and had everything I could ever need to prepare a meal (or make coffee). The bathrooms and laundry room also were well stocked with laundry detergent, soaps and toilet paper. There was an exceptional selection of books, movies, puzzles, and games to meet all your leisurely needs. Great decor and pictures as well. They have pictures of the Mckenzie River in the early 1900s which were very cool to look at.
We stayed here in late Winter/early Spring and were lucky to enjoy two sun filled days in a row. It was in the mid 60s but with the sun shinning down and reflecting off the river it felt much warmer. We explored areas around Mckenzie River and ran in to lots of snow as well. The elevation quickly inclines in this area. We brought our own poles in attempt to fish from the property, but the river is much too fast at this spot (could have to do with our lack of knowledge about the fishing in this area or the time of year as well). However, I'm sure there are more good fishing spots you could find in the area, we just didn't look in to it. I think there may have a been a couple kid size fishing poles as well at the property.
Overall it was a great experience and we plan on coming back soon. The old growth forest, rivers, waterfalls and hot springs all make for a great escape from urban life.
