About Joe Fuhr

Lots of work has gone in to making this a great place to get away from it all. We try hard to be very responsive to all inquiries, and to make your stay the best it can be. We've worked hard to make the cabin a great place to stay , and hope you'll enjoy it!

Joe Fuhr purchased this cabin in 2015

Why Joe Fuhr chose Meadows of Dan

It's unbelievably peaceful up here. Although it's convenient to so many things in the area, this cabin has a quiet, secluded feel to it. We have most amenities people are looking for, but the cabin has retained an authentic rustic feel and charm.

What makes this cabin unique

One unique benefit of this cabin is it's construction, as well as it's location on the property. Only a few of the cabins in the area, including ours, are made of hand-hewn hemlock. Our cabin is also situated in a private location, with a long hillside sloping up on the east, and trees on the north and west. On the west side of the cabin, the trees slope down to the river, with mountain glimpses through the trees west of the river. It feels quite secluded and peaceful.

Better than expected!

We just had a wonderful 2 nights at this charming log cabin...it was very clean, wonderful log cabin smell, I loved the quilts all over the house ( I make quilts so I really loved this feature), peaceful evenings and mornings. I liked being at the end of the row which gave us a little added privacy...once you sat down on the porch, it was like being in another world.

cute and clean, well stocked cottage

  • 3 of 5

Disappointed over having to change our cottage, due to owner needing to return after Hurricane Harvey and needing their place to stay in. The cottage we were given had NO dvd/cd player (it rained and couldn't watch any movies). There were light bulbs burnt out in some of the rooms making it difficult to see. We were told the ones in the living room ceiling fan were hard to replace. Photos of cottages do not show the downhill slope in back yard and my wife with knee concerns wasn't able to walk our dog. We appreciated seeing that everything needed in the cottage was provided generously.

Owner's Response: We really appreciate your willingness to be re-booked into a different owner’s cabin at the last minute, after we had to leave Florida to occupy our own cabin due to the approach of Hurricane Irma. As the cabins are separately owned, each cabin has slightly different amenities; our apologies about the lack of DVD player in the other owner’s cabin. We were able to get two light bulbs replaced in your cabin soon after your arrival, but you’re correct, two other bulbs in the ceiling fan are at the apex of the A-frame, and the equipment needed to replace those bulbs during your stay wasn’t available. We’ve notified that cabin’s owner of the bulbs that need to be replaced. Our cabin, as well as the other that you were re-booked into, do have one or two steps into the front doors from the parking areas. The cabins are on a hillside, so there is a slope behind the cabin. Best of luck in the future!

Very relaxing and peaceful!

Lovely little cabin! Very clean and comfortable. Our dogs love the porch overlooking the woods as much as we do! Love the little community of Meadows of Dan, which is just a few minutes away. Great little country store and several restaurants. The booking process was very easy. Will be back for sure!

A Blue Ridge Cabin is an authentic, hand-hewn hemlock cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Meadows of Dan, Floyd, and less than two miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's privately situated on a unique property with other cabins scattered around; our particular cabin is in a private location with tall trees bordering two sides, and a hillside bordering another, to offer plenty of seclusion. Parking is immediately adjacent to the cabin, with no hills or stairs to climb.

The cabin has wood floors, a private master bedroom, a great loft with beds and a reading nook, a full kitchen with dishes, pots, pans, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster, and bathroom with walk-in shower and a full size washer and dryer. The dining area has a solid walnut table and benches that seat six.

The living room has a a cozy gas fireplace that's easy to operate, a hand-made walnut futon and coffee table, rockers, 39" cable HDTV, free WiFi, and a bluetooth stereo speaker. We have some DVDs available, plus lots of books and board and card games.

There's space for seven to sleep here - a queen bed in the bedroom, with windows looking out at the trees; a queen and single bed in the loft; and a queen sleeper futon in the living room. All linens are provided for your stay.

One of the best features is the large wooden balcony off the back of the cabin; it's quiet and comfortable, with rocking chairs, a wicker love seat, and a charcoal grill. You can put on a playlist, sit and relax with a good book and a cup of coffee or glass of wine, and enjoy.

Once you're here, you can walk just down the private road to the Cockram Mill Complex, where the Crooked Road Cafe is becoming more and more popular for it's excellent food and live entertainment. Grab lunch and a cold drink at the cafe, and sit on the back deck overlooking the river. Also located at the Cockram Mill Complex is an antique/ consignment/ ice cream shop, perfect for a summer day. On the grounds of the cabin itself, are acres of mowed fields and gravel roads to walk, run, bike, and walk your dogs.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than two miles away from the cabin. Lovers Leap is on Jeb Stuart Highway, only a couple of miles away, and has some of the most picturesque views around. There are several antique shops, country stores, and farmers markets in the area. Mabry Mill is the most photographed landmark on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is just a few miles away. The mill still grinds flour more than a century since its original construction. Near Mabry Mill, you can also see the Matthews Cabin, blacksmith shop and interpretive area, as well as demonstrations on blacksmithing, carding, spinning, basket making and other traditional Appalachian crafts.

Visits to local wineries such as Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalaccia are a must. Just a little further away, enjoy local meaderies and cideries. The musically inclined can spend a few days at FloydFest - the cabin is one of the most convenient spots to stay if you're attending. Less than a half hour away, visit the unique town of Floyd, grab a microbrew, a fresh cup of coffee, visit the country stores and listen to live Bluegrass music.

There's tons of things to do outdoors, including hiking the trails at Rocky Knob, Fairy Stone State Park, and climbing Buffalo Mountain. The Rocky Knob recreation area covers more than 4000 acres. Four trails offer a variety of scenic and historical wonders. The Rock Castle Gorge trail descends over three miles into the backcountry camping area in the bottom of the gorge. The strenuous and rugged nature of the trail reveal part of the reason this pathway was given National Recreational Trail status. There's also a great recreation area nearby with basketball and tennis courts, and Fred Clifton Park, a couple miles up the road, has awesome views of the northern Blue Ridge and diverse bird and butterfly watching.

The cabin is an easy drive to Martinsville to catch the NASCAR races. Stuart is a beautiful drive less than 20 minutes from the cabin, while bigger box stores can be shopped in Galax, Christiansburg, and Martinsville.
