Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Pine Point

Tiny studio cottage with seven-mile sandy beach across the street.

The Blue Ibis is our little studio cottage and the perfect place to relax and recharge. Complete with a galley kitchen (coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, small refrigerator/freezer, range/oven, and a gas grill outside), 3/4 bath (shower, corner sink and toilet), the main room has a desk, full size bed, and a small dining table and seating, there is even a screened in porch with a view of part of the Scarborough Marsh. It is the perfect 'home base' for visiting and experiencing all the beauty of Maine's Down East Coast and surrounding areas during your stay.

The cottage is in a peaceful setting, with a beautifully maintained common area garden and mature trees for shade in back where you can enjoy an outdoor meal or read a book. Off street parking right next to the cottage. Inside, there are an assortment of board and card games, and a DVD player and TV. Sorry, no cable, satellite, Wi-Fi, nor phone. But you are here to relax and re-center yourself, as well as experience all that Maine has to offer. It is cooled by a ceiling fan, and an upper (loft) window is kept open to let hot air escape. With the windows open and the ceiling fan on, it is a comfortable temperature even on the warmest days. Plus, just across the street, there is the best part of the seven-mile stretch of sandy beach, the Grand and Pine Point Beaches.

Just a short stroll brings you to either of two points of access through dune-grassed rights of way which lead directly to the fine sands, variable surf, picture perfect stretch of sand and surf of the Atlantic and Saco Bay. The closest is via Snowberry Ocean View Park at the end of Pine Point Road. Its a beautifully landscaped public space that provides access to Pine Point Beach that features a concrete boardwalk, trellis bench, bike rack and even a foot rinse. The other plublic access is via Granite Street, across from Beach House Market & Deli.

From the beach, you will be able to see the Audubon protected Strattons Islands which are 2 miles off-shore. The northern end of the beach is bordered by the Nonesuch River with a view of Winslow Homer's picturesque Black Point. Around the bend are local lobster boats coming and going, seals riding the current, an oyster farm and people fishing off the pier and breakwater. To the south is the Old Orchard Beach Pier. On Thursday nights, take an evening walk to the beach and watch a great fireworks show in the near distance off the pier. Bring a light jacket and beach blanket; the beach evenings can be cool and breezy, even in midsummer! Far to the distance, the Biddeford Pool & Wood Island Lighthouse flashes at night near the mouth of the Saco River.

The charming bell of the local Trolley on the East Side route will greet you at the Clam Bake stop, and just a dollar connects you to Old Orchard Beach, just a little over two miles away, with its boardwalk, shops and amusement park. Within walking distance of the cottage there are a couple other local seafood shacks that allow for takeout or dine in, but don't miss out on having a beer and a 'lobs-tah' at Bailey's Lobster Pound with its endless deck that overlooks the lobster boats and the pier, as you watch the tide roll in. Or have a dining experience at the Fisherman Cooperative which is within walking distance and where many of the locals are known to cast a line.

Our little cottage is located a short drive away from Portland, rated in the top ten of friendliest cities, offering fine restaurants and Ferry Boats awaiting to transport you to Scenic Casco Bay Islands or as far away as Nova Scotia, Canada. Further up the coast you will discover bargains in the famous factory outlet stores including the original LL Bean of Freeport, Maine. Go a little further north to beautiful Wiscasset and get a world famous, delicious lobster roll at Red's Eats.

Locally, in Saco, make sure to save an evening for a movie at the Saco Drive In, the 2nd oldest drive-in in the country, where you watch from your own car, in an outdoors spot with a casual food menu.

You can rent a kayak or canoe at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center, bike, hike, or run the Eastern Trail, part of the growing East Coast Greenway, a 2,900-mile trail network from Maine to Florida.

Less than 1/2 hour to our south lies the popular shopping area of Kennebunkport's scenic and quaint Dock Square. Kennebunkport is also famous for Walkers Point, still the summer home of our 41st President, George Bush and his wife Barbara. Parsons Way is a popular seaside walk along the rocky coast just south of Walkers Point. The path winds along the ocean past "Spouting Rock" and the "Blowing Cave".

Wells National Estuary Research Reserve is 1600 scenic acres including a 19th century saltwater farm, Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge area, Laudholm Farm Visitors Center, exhibits, and seven miles of trails along marshes, fields, and wetlands. Open year round off Route 9 in Wells, this is a popular day trip for nature enthusiasts.

Continuing south, Ogunquit offers a small picturesque village 40 minutes from Old Orchard Beach. Known for its numerous artists for more than a half a century, walking tours of art galleries and private studios can start anywhere in town.

A walking tour along The Marginal Way, a footpath along the beautiful rocky shoreline ending in the picturesque Perkins Cove, is a must for every visitor. Ogunquit is also home to one of New England's last original summer theater.

Portland Headlight & Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse are both less than a half hour to our north in Cape Elizabeth. Portland Headlight was commissioned by George Washington and first lit in 1791. Portland Headlight is located in beautiful Fort Williams Park. It is Maine's oldest lighthouse and offers an onsite museum.

The Blue Ibis is ideal for just one or a couple; there is a full size bed on the main floor. There is also an inflatable twin mattress in the loft, a great sleeping area for a small adult or older child. No pets, please. Bring your own towels.

Enjoy your Maine adventure!

Lovely little space, great location.

We had a wonderful experience at blue ibis cottage. The location was awesome - 3 minute walk to the beach, near Freeport and Portland. Enough space for two people to inhabit comfortably. Small kitchen, but has everything you need. Plus the owner was very kind and responsive. Highly recommend!

Perfectly Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This little cottage was exactly what we were looking for in our weekend away. The cottage is small but is all you need, such a nice breeze through the open windows. Plenty of room in the small fridge for what we brought for food, as well as leftovers from eating out. The beach was just a short walk away and much quieter than the stretch of beach downtown. The food, rides and people of downtown are not far but require a short drive, which is perfect because we were hoping for a quiet retreat. If you want to be part of the bustle of downtown this cottage may not be for you, but if you're looking for a quiet, peaceful vacation with someone you don't mind being in smaller quarters with then this cottage is absolutely perfect.

Quiet Cottage

We stayed at the Blue Ibis Cottage for two nights and had a great visit. It had just what you needed to enjoy some time away from home and was a short walk from a beautiful beach.

Loved it

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed at this cottage and it was absolutely adorable. Walking distance to the beach (about a 5-10 min walk) not too far from Old Orchard and about a 20 minute drive to downtown portland. Awesome location and we couldn't have been happier with our stay!

Great beach access and only 2 miles to the pier. Absolutely loved the cute cottage atmosphere. Fun themed beach decor and very clean. I would go again in a heartbeat and definitely recommend it to those looking for a nice little place for two.

Review of Blue Ibis Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This place is perfect for a couple looking to rest and relax. The beach is a stone's throw away and relatively secluded. The property is clean as well, and conveniently located near a few deli/grocery stores. We walked to the pier during low tide which took about 40 minutes but was a beautiful walk. The property has a grill, perfect for sitting out and enjoying the beach air. Had a great time!
