Memories made

  • 3 of 5

This was my first experience of being the person to find a VRBO for a related family of 12. The best part was we were all together in one house so could enjoy stories, eating etc together. The location was central to the activities we wanted to do including white water rafting, train ride Chama to Antonito, trips to Sante Fe, Los Alamos, and Taos, and short time at Ojo Caliente spa.

The amenities were not misrepresented but I did not pay attention to the fact of no air conditioner or microwave. The other VRBO places nearby do not have air either (if I recall correctly). My husband bought a microwave to ease the cooking of oatmeal (not instant) and that sure helped all of us!

The unseasonably hot weather made the house very hot, so soon after arrival at 6 PM, three of us were back to town for 4 fans. Jason brought over 2 fans while we were gone which supplemented the few already in the house along with some ceiling fans. We ended up using all but one fan.

There are, as best as I remember, six sets of two steps going from one room to another and close to a landing area of the main steps. Two of our group fell on steps, fortunately not getting serious injury. I mention this just to bring attention to anyone staying there to who may not be sure-footed.

So, good memories. All together. Those were the best parts.

I want to mention the VRBO people give information on the VRBO app. When going to this location it comes up with all kinds of things to do in Caliente, CA! close to SanDiego!. All of those activities I listed above are not mentioned but easy to find through other means.

No Air Conditioner;

  • 2 of 5

Owner was very pleasant, and we enjoyed the week-long stay. However, there was no air conditioner and no microwave. To be fair, those items aren’t listed on the VRBO website, but neither is their absence noted… AC is a fairly standard amenity in this area of the world, and its absence was keenly felt. The upstairs part of the house was blazing hot during the day and we had to purchase 6 fans to keep the house livable at night. We also purchased a microwave at the local Wal-Mart because we weren’t aware that there wouldn’t be one available (anyone with kids addicted to macaroni will understand the necessity of this action!). Basically, we vacated the house by 10 am each morning and didn’t come back until after sunset each day because of the heat. Also, due to the historic nature of the home, it was fairly infested with bugs. The room at the back of the house with an exterior door had so many spiders in it the most stalwart of our group wouldn’t stay there (he moved the mattress to the floor of the living room), and keeping the bugs out of food and beds was a lot of work. So, if you’re looking for luxury this isn’t the place for you. If you’re looking for a fun adventure, lots of space for a larger party, it isn’t in the middle of the summer, and you don’t mind the “historic” flavor then I’d recommend it.
