About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4-6

MUD SEASON SPECIAL!! As the snow melts and the sun starts to beat down on Columbine Lake, everything slows down a bit. This is a great time to relax at the cabin, watch for migrating birds, keep an eye out for moose, and drop by the Sagebrush for a beer or a glass of wine in the afternoon. This is our slow season so we are offering a special mid April to mid May price of $110/night.

This comfortable, historic cabin on Columbine Lake is located approximately two hours from Denver. Columbine Lake is a natural glacial lake between the town of Grand Lake and the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The cabin was originally constructed as a fishing cabin in the late 1800’s and expanded to create a two bedroom, one bath getaway. It features an original stone fireplace in the living room and master bedroom of chinked log construction. The cabin sleeps four comfortably with room for six using a pullout couch. Bedrooms are located at opposite ends of the cabin allowing for privacy. One bedroom has a queen bed while the other has a full size bed. The pullout couch has a queen size Memory foam mattress that is reputed to be quite comfortable-no bar in your back at all. The remodeled bathroom is clean and comfortable and has a shower. The updated, fully stocked kitchen provides seating for four-six people along with a gas grill on the deck- excellent for star gazing chefs. Internet access and Apple TV are available and allow you to stay in touch with family and friends and watch a variety of shows and movies. The cabin is small (700 sq. ft.) but is laid out well and allows for privacy as well as group gatherings.

Fisherman's Retreat is located across the road from Columbine Lake with a view to the lake and a one mile road around the lake for the walkers in your group. Guests are not allowed to use the lake for boating or fishing but it is certainly available for your enjoyment. Boats can be rented in Grand Lake and the surrounding area and fishing lakes and streams abound.

In addition to the proximity to RMNP, National Forest land surrounds the area and Grand Lake, Lake Granby and Shadow Mountain Reservoir provide a unique outdoor playground. We are located about 40 minutes from Winter Park Ski Area, 15 minutes from Granby and Granby Ranch skiing. There is a Nordic Center just south of Columbine Lake on the golf course as well as cross country skiing about 25 minutes away at YMCA of the Rockies. Of course, there is plenty of skiing and snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding US Forest Service land.

Moose, fox, deer, otter and elk are seen on the property or close by. The bird population is diverse and, in summer, ospreys fly over the lake almost daily. Shopping, restaurants, and community events in Grand Lake and nearby towns enrich the wilderness experience to create a vacation perfect for people of all ages. Various community events round out the calendar. This beautiful, peaceful part of Colorado is a place that you will think back on throughout the year.

About Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush

My husband and I are retired teachers and never thought we would have a little cabin of our own in the Colorado Rockies. We find ourselves looking back and feeling thankful for the days we have had here, the people we have met, and the opportunity we have had to share this little mountain getaway.

Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush chose Rocky Mountain National Park

We became enchanted with the Grand Lake area because of all the water and the quiet. Wildlife abounds and we are amazed almost every day at what we get to see right from our deck. While this is a peaceful place, there is plenty going on when you're in the mood for some activity. It seemed the perfect blend of escape from the city, outdoor experiences, and new people to meet.

Charming Getaway

  • 5 of 5

You can tell that Tom and Betty love and use this cabin themselves... it's clearly much, much more than a vehicle for making money. Every detail (room configuration, quality of linens, art, stocking of kitchen) contributes to its charm and livability.

The location of the Columbine Lake neighborhood is perfect: easy accessibility to RMNP for fishing, cycling, and hiking, and to the town of Grand Lake. This year we added swimming in the lake to our activities, which was a blast. Wetsuits recommended!

We also enjoyed visits from the neighborhood moose (plural).

Thank you, Tom and Betty, for allowing dogs. I tried to leave the place very, very clean. That sweet little vacuum you have helped!

Warmest regards,

Sue & Jerry

Wonderfully appointed cabin in a terrific location.

  • 5 of 5

This cabin couldn't be better. Every detail is just perfect. The location on Columbine Lake is serine and beautiful. We enjoyed the birds & appreciated the fenced in porch and yard, as did our dogs! We encountered moose several times. One moring a pair walked right in the cabin's front yard! The proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park is terrific and the town of Grand Lake is charming.

The owners of this cabin have attended to every detail. We enjoyed the fireplace stocked with plenty of wood. The beds & bedding were comfy. The kitchen has everything you need, even sharp knives! And we were able to find hiking trails nearby that allowed dogs thanks to the host's guidebooks.

Would love to come back!

Very comfortable rustic cabin with all the necessary items and a couple of luxuries.

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyable two bedroom cabin with a great fireplace and compact functional kitchen. Deck is great for bird and wildlife watching and night-time star gazing. Convient location to both Grand Lake and RMNP. Enjoyed our down time here, plenty of good walks/hikes in the area. Look forward to a return visit.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed your stay, Paul. Thank you for taking such good care of the cabin. The fox has been around almost daily. Her bird feeder food supply will soon disappear, however, as the warmer days will bring bears out of hibernation. I've never seen a bear at the cabin and actually don't want to! We'd love to host you again sometime.
