Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4-6

This comfortable, historic cabin on Columbine Lake is located approximately two and a half hours from Denver. Columbine Lake is a natural glacial lake between the town of Grand Lake and the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The cabin was originally constructed as a fishing cabin in the late 1800’s and expanded to create a two bedroom, one bath getaway. It features an original stone fireplace in the living room and a master bedroom of chinked log construction. The cabin sleeps four comfortably with room for six using a pullout couch. Bedrooms are located at opposite ends of the cabin allowing for privacy. One bedroom has a queen bed while the other has a full-sized bed. The pullout couch has a queen size Memory foam mattress that is reputed to be quite comfortable - no bar in your back at all. The remodeled bathroom is clean and comfortable and has a shower. The updated, fully stocked kitchen provides seating for four-six people. Internet access and Apple TV are available and allow you to stay in touch with family and friends and watch a variety of shows and movies. The cabin is small (700 sq. ft.) but is laid out well and allows for privacy as well as group gatherings.

Fisherman's Retreat is located across the road from Columbine Lake with a view to the lake and a one-mile road around the lake for the walkers in your group. Guests are not allowed to use the lake for boating or fishing but it is certainly available for your enjoyment. Boats can be rented in Grand Lake and the surrounding area and fishing lakes and streams abound.

In addition to the proximity to RMNP, National Forest land surrounds the area and Grand Lake, Lake Granby and Shadow Mountain Reservoir provide a unique outdoor playground. We are located about 40 minutes from Winter Park Ski Area, 15 minutes from Granby and Granby Ranch skiing and golf. There is a Nordic Center/Sledding Area/Golf Course just south of Columbine Lake as well as cross-country skiing about 25 minutes away at YMCA of the Rockies. Of course, there is plenty of hiking, skiing and snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding US Forest Service land.

Moose, fox, deer, otter, and elk are seen on the property or close by. The bird population is diverse and, in summer, ospreys fly over the lake almost daily. Shopping, restaurants, and community events in Grand Lake and nearby towns enrich the wilderness experience to create a vacation perfect for people of all ages. Various community events round out the calendar. This beautiful, peaceful part of Colorado is a place that you will think back on throughout the year.

About Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush

My husband and I are retired teachers and never thought we would have a little cabin of our own in the Colorado Rockies. We find ourselves looking back and feeling thankful for the days we have had here, the people we have met, and the opportunity we have had to share this little mountain getaway.

Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush chose Grand Lake

We became enchanted with the Grand Lake area because of all the water and the quiet. Wildlife abounds and we are amazed almost every day at what we get to see right from our deck. While this is a peaceful place, there is plenty going on when you're in the mood for some activity. It seemed the perfect blend of escape from the city, outdoor experiences, and new people to meet.

Very cozy and well equipped and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay. Had lots of fires-great wood supply.

Nice deck and fenced backyard which our dog loved. Comfy beds and lots of warm blankets and comforters-plenty hot water, too. Enjoyed some of our favorite shows on Netflix. Would definitely recommend.

Owner's Response: We're glad you had such a nice time and that you took advantage of both evening fires and Netflix catch-up time. It sounds like you had a perfect autumn vacation at Columbine Lake.

Didn't work out for me

  • 2 of 5

We had some bad luck with weather. Early snow closed Rocky Mountain and there was not much to do. I could not get the appleTV to work. Parts of the cabin are over 100 years old and did not fit well with me. I am 6' 2" and kept banging my head going thru door ways that were for some one 5' 10" or less. The cabin was just not a good fit for me. We left early mostly because of the weather.

Owner's Response: It's too bad that the weather was not what you had hoped. We often get light snows in October and the week of your planned visit went from snow to sunny days. It's a shame you couldn't stay for the whole gamut of fall weather. Even now, October 23rd, there is still no snow on the ground. We're sorry the Apple TV didn't work for you. We are just a phone call away and have always been able to solve problems like that. We wish you had called. It is true that the doorways inside the cabin were built for shorter people. You do have to adjust to this. My husband is nearly six feet tall and has no problem. There are also small steps between rooms. You have to pay attention to that as well. I agree that the cabin isn't for everyone but if you like a feeling of history, warm log walls, a stone fireplace and wildlife right outside your door - not to mention a beautiful lake right across the road - it is a good fit for you.

Escape to Grand Lake hideaway

  • 5 of 5

WE LOVED IT HERE & would return. Clean! So comfortable. An excellent location for getting into the town of Grand Lake (just a few minutes away) & for visiting the other lakes - but in a beautiful wooded hideaway. A view of Columbine Lake (only ONE wish: that renters could fish it! that wasn't clear at first) Great spot for sitting & relaxing & photos tho, and for a lovely walk around the lake with our puppy. (We were here in Sept & hit fall colors just right.) Betty & Tom have done so much to make this charming cabin cozy, homey, with all the comforts. Tom's handiwork to upgrade it & Betty's decor & all the helpful info was fun & useful. It was so well equipped with essentials & extras. And WILDLIFE. It's actually IN RMNP, I think. (Read the comments in the guest book for bird watching, too) We met Tom, who gave us 'the tour' - a lucky bonus. And speaking to/ emailing with Betty was delightful, as if we've known them a long time. The ONLY reason I don't want to make this review as fabulous as the cabin actually was is because we don't want it to be booked ahead of us for our next trip. This spot would be great in all seasons, I'm sure. MANY THANKS to Tom & Betty for making our visit perfect (It WAS too short, though. We'll plan a longer visit next time.)

Our 2nd time staying at this great cabin located right near Columbine Lake. Gorgeous fall leaves to look at while walking dogs, short drive to downtown shops and restaurants. Cabin has all that you need, is very clean and comfortable. We will be back!

Charming Getaway

  • 5 of 5

You can tell that Tom and Betty love and use this cabin themselves... it's clearly much, much more than a vehicle for making money. Every detail (room configuration, quality of linens, art, stocking of kitchen) contributes to its charm and livability.

The location of the Columbine Lake neighborhood is perfect: easy accessibility to RMNP for fishing, cycling, and hiking, and to the town of Grand Lake. This year we added swimming in the lake to our activities, which was a blast. Wetsuits recommended!

We also enjoyed visits from the neighborhood moose (plural).

Thank you, Tom and Betty, for allowing dogs. I tried to leave the place very, very clean. That sweet little vacuum you have helped!

Warmest regards,

Sue & Jerry
