Winter Wonderland at our Historic Cabin On Columbine Lake

Bedrooms 2
Space 700 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4-6

This comfortable, historic cabin on Columbine Lake is located approximately two and a half hours from Denver. Columbine Lake is a natural glacial lake between the town of Grand Lake and the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The cabin was originally constructed as a fishing cabin in the late 1800’s and expanded to create a two bedroom, one bath getaway. It features an original stone fireplace in the living room and a master bedroom of chinked log construction. The cabin sleeps four comfortably with room for six using a pullout couch. Bedrooms are located at opposite ends of the cabin allowing for privacy. One bedroom has a queen bed while the other has a full-sized bed. The pullout couch has a queen size Memory foam mattress that is reputed to be quite comfortable - no bar in your back at all. The remodeled bathroom is clean and comfortable and has a shower. The updated, fully stocked kitchen provides seating for four-six people. Internet access and Apple TV are available and allow you to stay in touch with family and friends and watch a variety of shows and movies. The cabin is small (700 sq. ft.) but is laid out well and allows for privacy as well as group gatherings.

Fisherman's Retreat is located across the road from Columbine Lake with a view to the lake and a one-mile road around the lake for the walkers in your group. Guests are not allowed to use the lake for boating or fishing but it is certainly available for your enjoyment. Boats can be rented in Grand Lake and the surrounding area and fishing lakes and streams abound.

In addition to the proximity to RMNP, National Forest land surrounds the area and Grand Lake, Lake Granby and Shadow Mountain Reservoir provide a unique outdoor playground. We are located about 40 minutes from Winter Park Ski Area, 15 minutes from Granby and Granby Ranch skiing and golf. There is a Nordic Center/Sledding Area/Golf Course just south of Columbine Lake as well as cross-country skiing about 25 minutes away at YMCA of the Rockies. Of course, there is plenty of hiking, skiing and snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding US Forest Service land.

Moose, fox, deer, otter, and elk are seen on the property or close by. The bird population is diverse and, in summer, ospreys fly over the lake almost daily. Shopping, restaurants, and community events in Grand Lake and nearby towns enrich the wilderness experience to create a vacation perfect for people of all ages. Various community events round out the calendar. This beautiful, peaceful part of Colorado is a place that you will think back on throughout the year.

About Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush

My husband and I are retired teachers and never thought we would have a little cabin of our own in the Colorado Rockies. We find ourselves looking back and feeling thankful for the days we have had here, the people we have met, and the opportunity we have had to share this little mountain getaway.

Why Tom Hubbard and Betty Bush chose Grand Lake

We became enchanted with the Grand Lake area because of all the water and the quiet. Wildlife abounds and we are amazed almost every day at what we get to see right from our deck. While this is a peaceful place, there is plenty going on when you're in the mood for some activity. It seemed the perfect blend of escape from the city, outdoor experiences, and new people to meet.

Wonderful family weekend in one cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

Tom and Betty's Grand Lake getaway was just perfect for me, my husband, our toddler, and our sweet old dog. The cabin had plenty of room for us to spread out and get comfortable. We had quite a bit of snow to play in - the fenced area in the yard was great to keep both the baby and our goofy dog contained. We cooked most of our meals in the lovely kitchen. It was so nice to be able to bring our meals and cook together. I think the dog enjoyed the heated floors more than anything! It was a great weekend escape!

Owner's Response: We are happy to hear you had such a good time, Jessica. The fenced area is perfect for dogs. Those pretty snow days are the absolute best. I agree with your dog - the heated floors are the perfect added touch on cold winter days. We hope to see you again.

This cabin is a sweet little gem

  • 5 of 5

This little cabin has great character and was well appointed. The owners have made it very cozy. From the fantastic wood fireplace, the radiant floor heat in the kitchen and bath to the Bluetooth wireless speaker and Apple TV. The owners have very thorough instructions which help. For the purpose of those staying, just know there is no local tv available but the Apple TV gives plenty of options. The fenced in area is a nice option for pets since there are always people walking dogs. Such an enjoyable stay and the owners are so helpful. Thank you!

We enjoyed our stay! The cabin was cozy and warm and everything we needed was there! Our Christmas at the cabin was memorable and our boys are already begging to come back. Betty and Tom were amazing and we felt like family and not just another guest. Thanks for the memories. We look forward to returning.

Very cozy and well equipped and quiet

Really enjoyed our stay. Had lots of fires-great wood supply.

Nice deck and fenced backyard which our dog loved. Comfy beds and lots of warm blankets and comforters-plenty hot water, too. Enjoyed some of our favorite shows on Netflix. Would definitely recommend.
