About the property

Country Cottage On Private, Serene Three Acres Of Land

You feel a sense of peacefulness the minute you step onto the grounds at Star Route. Sit on the front porch, relax in a hammock under the oaks, and enjoy the feeling you get from nourishing yourself in nature. The air is so pure up here, there is lichen growing on the rocks. This is a place to relax, put your feet up, take a hike to the river or dam, and just let go of the who's who, what's what, and let your creative juices flow. The cottage has been redecorated with vintage finds, and has a comfy queen bed, and sleeper/sofa in the living area. The kitchen has a special nook just for two, or if you have more guests, there is a dining table in the living area. There are many places to relax on the property, and I like guests to make themselves at home. There is no T.V., and yes, we are on a farm with chickens, no longer have a rooster, but you can hear the neighbors roosters in the distance. The ducks roam free, and we are happy to share vegetables from Jeff's yummy garden, (winter months though, not much available). We have one dog, one cat, doves, ducks, and chickens that are a delight to the property.

We have another cottage on the property, 311262, The Bunkhouse Suite, if you have family or friends you'd like to spend time with.

I live on the property in the main house, but there is plenty of privacy between the cottages.

The road to get here winds through the mountains, and if you don't like curvy roads, this may not be your journey. The closest restaurant and shops are in the village (20 minutes from the cottage).

About Rose Merrill

I'm a singer/songwriter loving life in the mountains so I can take care of my animals, garden and work on my music. I've been coming to this property since I was a little girl, and never dreamed I'd be lucky enough to be living here with my husband, Jeff.

Rose Merrill purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Rose Merrill chose Carmel Valley

I love the peacefulness of the property, and the weather is very pleasant. We don't get the fog, or the wind. Maybe a slight breeze, or early fog that will lift by mid-morning.

What makes this cottage unique

I love all the buildings on this property, which were built in the 40's and have a certain charm from that era. You get the feeling of "days gone by". Nourish yourself in nature.

Beautiful farm house

  • 5 of 5

Spent 2 days with my family and it has been the best experience ever. The place was very well kept with all the required amenities. My kids had a great time chasing the ducks, watching hens go by and most of all playing with Ruby the adorable dog. We will go back just to play with Ruby. Rose and John were wonderful host. A great vacation indeed.

Relaxing place to get away from it all

  • 4 of 5

Rustic farm setting. Majestic native oak trees, veiled in lichen, line the road all the way into this remote region of Carmel Valley and it’s surrounding mountains. Leave the world behind.

It was a little like camping...except for sleeping in a very comfortable bed. We loved the adoring dog Ruby that slept outside our front door. She is a Frisbee champion of some import. Ducklings, roosters, goats, a rope swing under a great oak tree. Bring your Keurig coffee, or perk coffee in an old fashioned coffee pot on the stove. We cooked, read books, played scrabble, and relaxed. The greatest charm is the greatest drawback: no phone, no phone reception, no TV. We actually loved it. The nearby river and old stone house and cabin-like community center are worth seeing. Our visit was memorable, as much as was Paris, France! Because we could enjoy the solitude and each other.

The cottage needs a couple of lightbulbs. We had to move a lamp around to get enough light. A landline phone would be a good idea from an emergency standpoint. Take in all the supplies you need, as we did, and I think you will love the place. Rose was a gracious host.

Wonderful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place. A big part of the charm is the setting. It's very remote, so you'll have plenty of opportunity to experience Carmel Valley beauty and vibe.

A few tips:

If you plan to cook in shop at Salinas or at Carmel by the Sea at a full grocery store. You won't find much more than milk in the village.

If you head up on what the owners' directions call the "straight way", you'll see your first turn just after the 23.2 mile marker on Carmel Valley rd. Look for the small green mile markers on the right side of the road. It will feel like a longer drive to the first turn than it actually is so don't be concerned.

Everyone should drive the Arroyo Seco route at least once in their life. Turn right (away from the village) to find this. You'll see views you could never imagine.

Also, Ruby the dog is one of the best parts of this place.

Owner's Response: For grocery shopping in the village, there are two that have plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit, wine, beer, canned goods, juices, dry goods, cheeses, along with a butcher shop for fresh meats, chicken and fish at Jerome's. There is also Carmel Valley Market, and they also have the same except for the butcher market. But, they have wonderful meats and sausage from a local butcher that are probably better than you get at chain grocery store. They are small markets, but I think you could find just about anything you'd need to make a meal.

Great escape out of the smoke

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Rose's place. Super comfy bed (always a winner for me) and a nice escape out of the smoky Bay Area due to wildfires. Rose's place is tucked away well off the beaten path. Kitchen was stocked with cooking implements and Rose left us a half dozen eggs on our porch for breakfast. It was amazing how many different birds you hear at sunrise- that was our alarm in the morning. We enjoyed playing fetch with Ruby (their dog) and walking around the property. Highly recommend if you need to get away for a weekend.

Wedding Weekend Stay

  • 5 of 5

Rose and her husband were very lovely with wonderful accommodations! We were staying for a wedding of a very close friend that we were in down in Monterey. The drive to their place from Monterey was gorgeous as with their property. It was really nice to get to know the history of Rose and the land she graciously shares.

Great little place to relax

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a quiet weekend hanging out at Dove Cottage. The cottage is small and has the essentials, and the best part of the place might be the porches! Between the front and back porches, there was always somewhere to lounge in sun or shade. Rose and Jeff are great hosts and toured us around their property, and pointed us in the direction of some good nearby swimming holes and trails.
