Overview

About the property

Close to airport, quick transit ride to downtown, convenient shops close to home

Our home is central and quiet with lots of shops close by and super accessible transit to downtown, beaches, or UBC. The shared kitchen area is clean and well equipped and the full bathroom is hardly used. This is the ideal location for guests who like a short cab ride to the airport but still prefer downtown accessible via transit.

HOUSE: Located near 65th Avenue and Granville Street. Upstairs, our home has three bedrooms, kitchen, and two bathrooms while the first floor area (where your private room is located) has another full kitchen, bathroom, and sitting area.

COMMON AREAS: The first floor kitchen and bathroom are semi-private. We rarely use these areas and will give you as much privacy as possible. We also have a small greenhouse and enclosed backyard with raspberries, flowers, and vegetables. Feel free to do some gardening, or pick some raspberries to enjoy!

The bathroom is hardly used - we have other bathrooms upstairs. There are complimentary basics - towels, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, etc.

The fully stocked kitchen is a second kitchen, mostly unused by our family. There are complimentary basics - coffee, sugar, oil, etc. - plus a full grocery store is 3 blocks away.

YOUR PRIVATE ROOM: Can accommodate 1 person -- or 2 people if necessary. The room has a small closet, dresser, and chair. Your fully private room is well-lit, small, and clean. There is high-speed wifi and cable tv included.

OUR FAMILY: We work full-time during the day and the children have school. Two of the children are highschool age and one attends elementary school. The youngest goes to bed fairly early, so the house gets quiet in the evenings. Our home is pet and smoke free so there is no smoking anywhere on the property.

Location

Coffee shops, groceries, lots of restaurants, and plenty of green spaces too! There is a large park and play ground nearby as well as the Fraser River Trail.

Transit & Parking

We are one block from Granville Street (downtown) bus and .5 block from the Arbutus Street (beach) bus. There is plenty of free street parking. If we are available, you can request complimentary YVR airport pick up or drop off, or (for an additional fee) ferry terminal pick up or drop off. This is entirely subject to our schedule and availability, so please inquire in advance.

About Kate Weale

Our family loves to travel! Because of this, we know exactly what you will be looking for during your stay. Please ask us for any pointers or location help.

Sharing accommodations is a great way to experience Vancouver. We are happily available to answer questions about the city or neighbourhood.

As a family with three kids and two working professionals, we are usually busy and keep to ourselves. We are friendly and love to answer questions for people trying to explore the city, but your privacy is important to us so we will wait for you to approach us.

Why Kate Weale chose West Side

Our community is close to an amazing hiking trail and has lots of restaurants and grocery stores. Our home is on the Marpole side border of Kerrisdale. Both of these neighbourhoods have lots of features that we enjoy equally.

HISTORY OF OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD:

Marpole is one of Vancouver's oldest communities. The Great Marpole Midden, an ancient Musqueam village and burial site, one of North America's largest village sites and "one of the largest pre-contact middens on the Pacific coast of Canada", has been a National Historic Site since 1933. According to the Musqueam, it dates back at least 4,000 years.

Non-First Nations people began to inhabit the Marpole area in the 1860s, calling it 'Eburne Station' after store and post office owner, Harry Eburne. The small town was separated from the city by miles of forest.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Vancouver Lulu Island Railway of the British Columbia Electric Railway interurban train were constructed, which triggered the development of sawmills, shingle mills and gravel companies in Marpole. In 1916, the area was renamed after Richard Marpole, the General Superintendant of the CPR Pacific Division. Richard was also influential in the development of the higher end homes in the area. By 1929, Marpole was a major industrial centre and was incorporated into the City of Vancouver.

Kerrisdale, our bordering community, gained its name in 1905 when British Columbia Electric Railway manager R.H. Sterling asked Mrs. William McKinnon to name the interurban stop at Wilson Road (today West 41st Avenue). She chose to call it "Kerry's Dale", after the name of her family home, Kerrydale, in Gairloch, Scotland. (Kerrydale means "little seat of the fairies"; the name quickly corrupted to Kerrisdale.)

What makes this house unique

Our home offers a completely private room and bathroom as well as a semi-private, fully equipped kitchen. We are one block away from transit to downtown, beaches, and UBC. We are a 10 minute drive to the airport.

Quiet place in a lovely historic neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

The quarters were generally clean and orderly, well maintained and stocked. Adequate and not too ornate. The house and neighborhood are pretty quiet which I needed. Also the gazebo in the garden is a pleasant place to read and enjoy tea and coffee. The kitchen was partially stocked with some food items. One neighborhood lady stopped by to suggest changes to certain dwarf trees planted on the grounds. Being a gardener myself this became an extended discussion. Walking distance to shops, banks, groceries etc.

Lovely room and kitchen in basement, sweet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, I had a restful evening and night here. Bed comfortable, nice kitchen I used in the evening. An added treat, the front yard has sweet outdoor bench with soft lights so I sat outside and read awhile in the perfect temperature and watched a few bunnies hop down the street. Convenient to grocery and cash machine, good driving directions. Would stay here again. Thank you.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

Kate is one of the most accomadating hosts I've ever met. We usually chose to stay in a separate property and have minimum contact with the hosts, which is fine. But in busy metro Vancouver, Kate shows me how organized a big family can be and offer us a perfect experience.

I was travelling with my dad(not English speaker) and my puppy Daisy(not English speaker either). Kate gave me excellent advice on dog daycare and nearby restaurants those are dog-friendly.

The location is perfect, we went to Burnaby and Richmond for those Chinese restaurants, all within 20 min drive. Traffic is excellent if you can sleep late to void the peak time!

Again, I will definitely recommend her to all my friends.

Right at home!

  • 5 of 5

This was first experience booking and staying in a VRBO, and it was great! Kate and Kent are lovely hosts, and made me feel right at home as soon as I arrived. The room I stayed in was cozy and comfortable. I appreciated having access to a small kitchen as well, so I could bring in food for my breakfasts. Their house is super close to transit, which made it really easy to get downtown or anywhere else I was exploring in the city. They also provided lots of information about their home and Vancouver, so I could know what to expect. Thanks again for a lovely stay!!
