About Maureen LeBourdais

We settled on this property in Horsefly in 1978. Maureen grew up in Toronto and moved to BC in 1973 after completing her education. Ray's family goes back several generation in the Cariboo and he moved back from North Vancouver, where he grew up, in 1971. They built up their "homestead" by hand, including their own log house and Maureen's weaving studio, which was once their barn. The property has a large organic garden and greenhouse, a fledgeling fruit tree orchard, and a friendly border collie names Molly.

Ray builds custom log houses at his mill site just down the road. Many of his houses have been for local folk but he has also shipped them as far away as Thailand. Maureen is a fibre artist and operates a fair trade textile import business, supporting women's organizations in Cambodia and Central Asia.

Ray initially built this vacation rental house for his mother, Nancy, who came here to live when she retired from nursing 25 years ago. She is 90 now and has just moved into Williams Lake, closer to amenties but still living fully and independently.

Maureen LeBourdais purchased this house in 1978

Why Maureen LeBourdais chose Horsefly

An old Cariboo cowboy whose parents homesteaded in this valley once told us," There are two kinds of people in this world. - people who live in Beaver Valley and people who wish they could." We were able to get this land as one of the last homestead leases in the region. We love to garden and the elevation and chain of lakes here give it a bit of a micro-climate , extending the season a little longer than the village just up the road. Horsefly is a great community - friendly and down-to-earth.

What makes this house unique

Living here, we are surrounded by nature; forests and open sky, wildlife, great fishing, hunting, berry-picking, hiking, lakes and rivers. All this within an hour of Vancouver, by air from Williams Lake - the best of both worlds!

Wonderful Cozy Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cabin in Aug 2015. This area is a hidden gem. Maureen and Ray were wonderful hosts Ray even brought us fresh carrots from the garden. Ray and Maureen have an intimate knowledge of the area and were very helpful. The cabin had everything we needed and is wonderfully cozy with 2 bedrooms. We will be back

The cabin felt like home right away. With an upstairs loft and a main floor bedroom there was easily room for us and Dad. The weather was great and we could quad right from the door. Keep your eyes open for wild life because it's everywhere. I think if Horsefly had been named Firefly or Dragonfly people would flock here; this area is a hidden gem.

You will find the village of Horsefly In the heart of BC’s Cariboo region. Horsefly is situated in the foothills of the Cariboo Mountains and offers spectacular views as you drive into the village, approx. 75 km (paved) from Williams Lake, BC.

Horsefly's history goes back to 1859 when the first gold in the Cariboo was discovered here. The Horsefly area has many natural attractions and hundreds of small lakes, rivers & creeks. It is known world-wide for hunting, fishing, mountain biking, back country skiing & hiking and other outdoor recreational activities.

The Horsefly River is a pristine mountain river that winds from its headwaters in the Cariboo Mountains, through the village of Horsefly, and down to Horsefly Bay on Quesnel Lake. The scenery is wonderful and includes two waterfalls. Most of the river is navigable and fishermen from all over the world fly fish for rainbow trout. Fishing is catch and release only to help enhance and protect the fishery. The Horsefly River is the second biggest salmon spawning river in the province of British Columbia. The Department of Fisheries & Oceans has built a spawning channel in the village of Horsefly which has helped dramatically to increase the population in the river. There is an easy walking trail along the channels, all wheelchair accessible.

Barkerville Historic Town, a 3 hour drive, was the heart of the Cariboo Gold Rush in British Columbia, Canada and is preserved as a historic town. This is a must-see attraction for the whole family with lots of activities including gold planning and the 1850’s Theatre Royal.

Beaver Valley, where we are located, is 15 minute drive from the village of Horsefly. This is a beautifully valley of lakes, forests and ranches.

The City of Williams Lake, 75 km, is the nearest larger centre, with an airport providing several flights a day to and from Vancouver BC – a one-hour flight.
