Overview

About the property

Majestic views on 3.5 acres! Pool, spa, pool table, volleyball, elevator & more!

The Bayberry Cottage is named for the wild bayberry bushes which scatter the landscape of Carova Beach in the Outer Banks. This luxurious and updated retreat is located in the 4WD area of Corolla, in the first cluster of homes encountered after leaving the paved road. Here, you have the adventure and privacy of an off-road vacation but are still located within minutes of "civilization." With every upscale amenity provided in the home, however, you may find trips to town unnecessary.

The retreat boasts unparalleled 360 degree views of the ocean and sound, enjoyed from nearly every room in the home and from our dual-level wrap-around porches. Sitting on 3.5 acres of unspoiled land, you will be immersed in the beauty of coastal NC. Enjoy your coffee viewing the sunrise over the Atlantic and your evening cocktails with the sunset over the sound and Penny's Hill, which is the second largest natural sand dune on the East Coast. Wild horses roam freely, and you may see one or a pack strolling along the beaches or by the house.

With 8 comfortable bedrooms (all with new, modern, tasteful decor) and 8 private full baths/1 half bath, your party can enjoy time together but also have their own private retreats. The expansive living room with views galore boasts a new sectional sofa to accomodate everyone comfortably while playing board games, watching TV, or catching up. We provide a wonderful collection of novels for your enjoyment on the beach. There is dining for 20 and a beautiful kitchen equipped to handle large groups. There are two dishwashers, 2 ovens, 2 refrigerators (one at the ground level kitchenette) two sinks, two microwaves, two blenders, toaster oven, two coffee makers, and much more, including plenty of place settings, utensils and gadgets for a delicious summer feast! The Captain's Watch area on the top floor hosts a table that can be used for family games and cards (provided in the home) or as extra dining (part of the total 20). The views of the sound and sunset are amazing from this spot.

In the home you will find 10 TV's, all with DISH satellite cable service and tons of channels. Every bedroom and both gathering rooms have a cable TV with movie channels and tons of programming. There is wifi internet (the very best available in our area), and it is great for emails, handhelds, and texts, though not great for streaming movies.

The ground floor game room is a fun spot, with a full sized pool table, mini kitchen area including a full-sized refrigerator and microwave, pub table, half bath (with two private showers outside), sofa, 3 TV's with Satellite, and wall mounted speaker system. This room opens to the gated pool deck, which includes a pool, beautiful stone finished in-ground stainless steel hot tub, tiki bar with bar stools, mini fridge and outlets (blenders for Margaritas sound nice!), and lots of deck chairs and loungers. There is plenty of deck space around the pool and house for lounging, sunning, visiting, and taking in the abundant beauty.

Come enjoy your next vacation at the Bayberry Cottage! We would love to have you.

About Blair Reeves

A native of NC, I grew up coming to the beach every summer. My earliest memories are happy ones of playing in the surf and sand with my brothers and counsins, of exploring the dunes and finding blackberries on the sandy roads, catching fireflies every June, and staying up late under the stars with my skin brown from the summer sun. When my husband and I moved back to NC in 2006, after living in various spots in the southeast for school and work, my dream was to create the same wonderful memories with our three children. We have owned and managed beach property in NC since 2009. This is our newest and most special home. I can't wait to share it with you!

Blair Reeves purchased this house in 2015

Why Blair Reeves chose Outer Banks

I am in love with the natural, wild beauty of the 4WD area of Corolla. You feel like you are truly at a "destination," a million-miles-away feeling, when you arrive at the Bayberry Cottage. The 3.5 acres of dunes are beautiful and private, especially with Penny's Hill practically in the backyard. The views of the ocean, sound, and Currituck Lighthouse are truly breathtaking. Plus, unlike any other spot, it's so thrilling to see wild horses roaming in their natural habitat. Often, when we are grilling in the dark or taking a walk through the paths, a horse (or group) will just appear and completely surprise us. It is amazing. We've seen whales breaching in the winter and spring, red fox, deer, and of course plenty of dolphins who even surf our waves. Here, you can get away from it all but also are close enough to the paved road that going into town is not a big deal. We love Agave Roja, Cosmos Pizza, and Kitty Hawk Kites. We hope you will be our guests at the Bayberry Cottage. It's like a slice of heaven.

Location

The Bayberry Cottage is in the 4WD area of Corolla /Carova area. It is a high lot with spectacular 360 degree views. The sun rises over the ocean directly in front of the house and the sun sets over the sound and Penny's Hill, directly behind the house and practically in our back yard. Penny's Hill is the second largest sand dune on the Eastrn Seaboard and lots of fun to climb and explore. Though located in the wild, untamed area of the Outer Banks, the home is in the "neighborhood" closest to the paved road- only about five minutes to the gas station and about 10 minutes to the grocery store, restaurants, shopping and more!

A Great Family Birthday Stay - With Wild Horses!

  • 5 of 5

We rented Bayberry Cottage last week for a family birthday. In short, it was truly wonderful! As lifelong visitors to the Outer Banks, we've stayed in many places, from Nags Head to Hatteras to Duck. We have never really ventured north of Corolla, where the famed wild ponies still roam. Our son, an inveterate fisherman, was turning 18, and we wanted to give a family and friends birthday he would remember. Bayberry Cottage fit the bill! Accessible only by 4-wheel drive, this remote "cottage" had all the trimmings of comfort desired by the adults in the group, with a pool and beach access for my son and his friends. Even my mom--now 86 years old--came to stay for a few days, and had a wonderful time. The cottage was large enough for everyone, and the house was wonderfully and lovingly appointed and maintained. Driving to and from the house on the beach was an adventure, too, and is accessed by driving along the beach for several miles. The owner and her local manager were extremely kind, and a minor maintenance issue was resolved right away by a great local guy and his son. Even the wild horses (I couldn't stop humming the Rolling Stones' song!) were a marvel to see. For anyone looking for a true OBX experience, this is certainly where you'll find it!

The Bayberry Cottage was great relaxing vacation spot for our large group of friends and family.

  • 5 of 5

Driving on the 4WD beach to get to the home was an adventure, we were forced to use our AWD Honda Pilot which was not recommended but we did not have any problems. The house is lovely, very secluded along with the few other homes in the immediate area. The beaches were surprisingly more crowded than we expected each day as I guess many people drive onto the 4WD beach and spend the day, however this did not impact our ability to find space on the beach and enjoy our time there. The house managers are very pleasant and receptive to minor issues and inquiries that we contacted them for during our stay. Unfortunately poor weather in the area delayed them from coming on Wednesday to clean the pool and take the garbage but they came on Thursday so again this was not a problem. We had 12 adults and 10 kids (including a few toddlers and infants) stay in the home and the amount of bedrooms and beds was just right for us. The hot tub and pool were great alternatives to have on days when the beach water was rough, as well as later in the day when the adults could relax pool side and allow the children to swim supervised at the house. If not for the pool those days would have been tough for the kids to stay busy all day so we were glad we opted for a house that had one. We did have several horses that were in close proximity to the house at times including the driveway which allowed for great pictures. The sunrise and sunsets are easily viewed from the decks of the home on clear days which was beautiful. The one drawback is that having to 'run to the store' for item(s) you may have forgotten is kind of a hassle due to having to drive back to town via the 4WD beach so you'd have to allow for ample time. Keeping drinks and food items cold in coolers was difficult because once your ice melted the freezer ice from the kitchen was not as much as we could have used so we would be forced to go buy ice. This would not be an issue if you didn't need to keep anything frozen or keep a large amount of drinks on ice all week. With six families and all of our individual food items the two refrigerators/freezers we completed full so we had to resort to coolers. An ice machine on premise would have been prefect but this only a minor glitche for us. Everyone had a blast from the adults to the teens to the toddlers. Would definitely recommend the Bayberry Cottage for your trip!

Loved every minute of it!

  • 5 of 5

From the time we talked to Blair about booking the house, until the very end of our vacation, she was nothing but professional, polite, and very helpful! The property managers, Janie and Jimmie were fantastic and super helpful as well. The house was in excellent condition and everything in the VRBO description was on point. We had plenty of room for everyone and the views were incredible! From sunrise to sunset, you have it all in this house. The sunrises from the top deck were unbelievable and you could finish your day with a sunset over the sound and the dunes. We've taken a lot of vacations in our lifetime and have stayed in many, many houses, but this property is at the top of the list. Only 2.5 miles from the hard road, it was a quick run out to the store if needed. But far enough away from the hard road to feel like you were in a tropical paradise. Even the drive from the beach to the house was entertaining! Make sure you have a good 4wd vehicle with clearance or make sure you have a shovel and wood boards to get out. The hill gets a little dug out from the Adventure horse tours constant driving up it. I have a lifted Jeep Wrangler, so I had no issues whatsoever, but we did have to help our friends in their Ford Escape get out when they left. But this is to be expected when you stay up on the Carova 4x4 beach. As far as the new walkway out to the beach, they put a lot of time and money into that project. It is very accommodating to get to the beach. The only thing I can complain about is the bottom of the stairs when you get to the beach at the bottom of the dune. There is about a 2-3 foot drop, instead of the stairs continuing to the beach. This is very dangerous and should be looked at for sure. It is very difficult to get back up too if you aren't in great shape. And a couple of people almost fell coming down to the beach. This issue wasn't a big enough problem to take away from the 5 stars though. As far as the pool area, it was fantastic. It also included a bar area, which we relaxed at in the late afternoon after the beach. The kids really enjoyed chasing frogs around at night next to the pool too. It entertained them for hours! I could really keep going on and on about this house, but you need to just book it and see for yourself! Thanks again Blair for an awesome vacation and for sharing your house with our friends and family! We made memories that will last a lifetime.... ~Wes

Owner's Response: Hi Wes, I am so glad to hear that you had such a wonderful vacation at the Bayberry Cottage. I strive to give excellent customer service and respond to guests immediately. We are very fortunate to have such amazing house managers, who also live in the 4WD area which makes them very accessible to our guests and any needs that should arise. They are so nice and thorough and help our guests tremendously. I am so glad that you could enjoy the sunrise and sunsets -- the views are magnificent from every place in the house. The pool deck is so much fun and perfect for kids and adults. It is great to hear that you loved it! The erosion this summer on the beach has been unexpected under our last walkway stair-step. Last summer it was buried! Jimmy has this on the list of priority items to fix, and hopefully it is already complete. I am sorry this was difficult during your stay. Please come back for a visit at the Bayberry Cottage. We would love to have you and offer special deals for returning guests. Most sincerely, Blair Reeves

Beautiful view great location but nothing more

  • 2 of 5

The house has the most gorgeous views and the best beach access but the house itself is lacking. Upon arrival (which we waited until 20 minutes past check in time) the house was filthy. Dust, cobwebs, and general dirt was not appealing. Outside the pool area there were Cheerios all over the deck, broken chairs, and the pool light and shower lights were burnt out. Also inside the house the air vents were so black from mildew anyone who has allergies will be miserable. In another area the house is supposed to be equipped to house 18 but only 1 coffee pot and 1 keurig. The pool area and outside bar were so bad only 4 or 5 people can enjoy. Another area of problem was the bathrooms. We have stayed in 3 other VRBO rental properties and to have NOT even a roll of toilet paper to start the week is ridiculous. Never mind having a soap dispenser and a towel to dry your hands is unreal. We always come prepared with paper goods, snacks, items to clean with, beach towels, and shop for food. The towels that were provided have seen better days and some have holes in them. The water pressure was spratic for the first 3 days to the point where the kitchen did not get any water at all and 16 people could not even wash hands. This took 2 days to figure out the problem and we got water pressure on Friday morning. She did respond and we are glad for that, but to go almost the whole vacation with the water for the money we spent was horrible. Maybe $$$ back should be a solution.

Unsatisfactory home to stay in.

Owner's Response: I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at our beautiful home. I do regret that you let me know about the majority of your complaints AFTER you departed, as I cannot help remedy items I do not know about. It seems that your main issue was with our wild setting. You complained about the spiders, bugs and dirt (it is sand, and blows in daily off the dunes and beach) upon your arrival, and my house cleaner (who along with her husband are the house caretakers and live in the 4WD area) immediately came to the house to sweep these off the decks and from the very high corners of the vaulted ceiling. We had just power washed the decks two weeks prior to your arrival. It is unavoidable in this undeveloped area that bugs and sand accumulate -- this happens daily, especially when porch and deck lights are left on at night (they are beacons!) and when doors are inadvertently left open. My house manager is very accommodating and would have quickly replaced any deck chairs, coffee makers, light bulbs, etc. had she/me been notified. During a busy rental season, things break and all we can do is quickly repair items, but we need to know about it! I send a detailed list of "packing reminders" prior to my guests' arrival, and this includes toilet paper, soap, etc. This is standard practice in our area and is made very clear far in advance. We are a self-catering vacation, not a hotel. I am certain that the air vents are not covered in mold -- they have oxidized in places due to the moist climate, which has caused discoloration. If you were concerned about this during your stay, again, you should have notified me. In terms of the water pressure, I am sorry that you experienced a temporary inconvenience. As soon as my house manager was notified of the issue, we had people immediately at the house to fix the issue. If you had notified us 3 days prior, we would have been there! We found that one of the pipes from the water room to the house was obstructed, and as soon as that was fixed everything worked great. This is a beautiful home with amazing views and amenities, but is is located in the absolute wilderness, where we operate on a well for water, a septic system instead of city sewage, and all sorts of wildlife abounds -- from the small gnats and spiders to raccoons and foxes and of course the beautiful wild horses. Based on your review, I have a funny feeling you are looking for a refund; that was made very clear in the review but never even discussed with me.

Very lovely with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our large family. Everyone had a nice bedroom with adjoining bathroom. Pool area was nice. The only thing we didn't like was the large final step from the stairs to the beach. The smaller children and my mother had trouble with it The landing also came off mid week and wasn't fixed before we left

Owner's Response: Thaank you so much for taking the time to review the Bayberry Cottage. I am so glad that you had such a wonderful vacation for your family reunion. Having private bedrooms with king-sized beds and en-suite bathrooms is such a nice feature when traveling with large groups! I am glad you enjoyed our nice pool area and the stunning views. The final step of the beach walkway is being fixed, and I am sorry this was an inconvenience. Sometimes the step is completely buried in sand, but recently it appears we have experienced some erosion. We would love to have you again!
