Tucked in the trees on a ledge overlooking McCauley Pond this lovely log sided home is ready for your perfect vacation. This non motorized pond is locally known as a productive spot to fish for pike, perch as well as large and small mouth bass and other species of fish. You may fish off the private dock or use the supplied canoe or row boat. It is always fun to stop on the island or just float around. Please be aware it's a short walk down some steps through the woods to reach the pond.
The house is very secluded with tons of privacy. There are only 3 or 4 houses on the pond and none are visible from the house. You can’t see or hear the road from the house. Several trails wind through the woods for short walks around the property. Just walking the well maintained driveway up to the road is a nice walk. If you prefer longer hikes you are not far from the ‘Saranac 6’ or the 46 High Peaks. The Visitor’s Interpretive Center at Paul Smith’s, about 10 minutes away, has many wide well maintained trails, programs and a butterfly house in season. There is also park land all around with countless trails.
Activities abound in the area. We are located close to the Saranac chain of lakes with several public boat launches. A 30 minute drive will bring you to Tupper Lake well known for the Adirondack Wild Center and its just opened elevated ‘Wild Walk’. You can also keep travelling to my favorite, the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Of course you must visit the village of Saranac Lake, ‘Capital of the Adirondacks’ and Lake Placid, home of 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics, to take advantage of the shops and restaurants. Minutes away, you will find Saranac Inn's golf course. Just started is a railroad bike trip that allows you to pedal a special bike on a RR track through the woods and past lakes and ponds(one being the pond our house is located on.)
The house itself is large, surrounded by deck on three sides, one covered, so you can enjoy the outdoors and the gas grill even if it’s raining.
The great room boasts a fireplace, piano, and large south facing windows looking out to the pond. In the great room is a couch with a pull out bed and also a futon. The first main floor bedroom features a queen sized bed, twin bed, and ensuite bathroom with a shower. The second main floor bed room has a queen sized bed and attached bathroom with tub/shower. Both main floor bedrooms have private entrances to the wrap around deck.
The master suite, on the upper floor, has a king sized bed and a loft overlooking the great room. On the loft is a pull out sleeper couch. The master suite has a private balcony. The master bathroom has a large shower and Jaccuzi tub with windows facing the woods.
The kitchen is well equipped with a large refrigerator, through door ice and water, dual fuels stove, dishwasher, and 2 microwaves. Small appliances include coffee maker, waffle iron, blender, crock pot, toaster and toaster oven. Plenty of cooking utensils are supplied as well as a full set of dishes and silver ware. The dining room table seats 10 or there are 2 picnic tables on the pond side deck and one on the covered deck not to mention 4 stools at the kitchen island.
The large well lit downstairs is a work in progress. Be careful around the building supplies and equipment but feel free to enjoy a game of pool on the 8’ x 4’ slate pool table. Paddles and oars are kept by the door that leads to path down to the pond.
On those hopefully rare indoor days checkout the entertainment center in the great room. It’s equipped with cable TV, DVDs, puzzles and games for all ages.
Winter brings many other activities for you enjoyment. You can ice fish out on the pond. Snowmobile trails are located nearby. Opportunities for cross country skiing and snow showing abound. Whiteface ski area is about 45 minutes away, the local Mount Pisgah and Big Tupper ski areas are closer and more accessible. Afterwards return home for a soak in the Jacuzzi or relax in front of the fireplace.
All in all we hope you enjoy your stay in a most beautiful area nature has to offer. Do as much or as little as you like, it’s your vacation!
Chris and Betsy currently live in New Jersey but hope to someday live in upstate New York permanently. Chris works in engineering and computers and Betsy works in the health care industry. We both like to cross country ski so we take advantage of all the trails available in the area. We love to take our boat out on the chain of lakes or just float around the pond with our fishing poles.
Chris Humme purchased this house in 2002
Fell in love with the location.
We love to be able to walk down to the pond to enjoy the view from the dock. We also love the seclusion of being tucked in among the trees surrounding the house. It is also wonderful to sit in the hot tub in the master bathroom and watch the snow fall.
In the summertime, we always add a stop at Donnelly's ice cream located by the "blinking light" at the intersection of rtes. 86 and 186. Their ice cream is an extra special treat!
We just got back from a holiday stay at this spacious, warm and inviting
home. The house is even nicer than the pictures show. There was plenty of
room for our group of 8. The house is very well designed and decorated,
exceptionally clean and well appointed. The great room was a wonderful
place for us to spend time together while still giving everyone space to
spread out and enjoy different activities when desired. The spacious
kitchen is a terrific place to gather, talk and prepare meals. Well stocked
with everything you could possibly need. We enjoyed the views from the
wraparound deck/porch and took many photographs of the scenic surroundings.
The fireplace and especially the radiant floor heat kept the house warm and
cozy. Very nice to return to after a day of skiing. Chris and Betsy were
terrific hosts. They quickly responded to any questions we had and were
very accessible when we needed them. We are all looking forward to our next
visit to this home away from home."
Stayed at this gorgeous vacation property August 13 - 20, 2016. Pictures cannot capture the true beauty of this home and serene surroundings. Home owners provided everything we could have possibly ever wanted and then some. We fished every day and caught many perch, bass, and sunfish both off the dock and from the boats. The location is perfect as we were secluded and so quiet yet the quaint villages of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid were only a 10 or 20 minute ride down the road. Our children and grandchildren hiked the Saranc 6 and visited the Wild Center. On a scale of one to ten.....this home is a 12!
We definitely wanted something private on or very close to a lake or pond. We were definitely NOT disappointed.
The long driveway in itself is a nature trail and at the end is a beautiful log house (the pictures don't do it justice).
It was so much fun rowboating around the pond which we launched from the private dock.
Watching the shooting stars at night was an added bonus!
The owners have everything taken care of that you may need while staying here- even growlers! (Admittedly, we didn' t know what those were so we googled them! LOL). We had such a wonderful time- even the dogs! We can't wait to come back!
If there is a downside, it's that it's a half hour drive from Lake Placid. However, we did find an amazing Italian place called the Red Fox Restaurant right up the road.
Thank you for sharing your amazing home with us!
This property couldn't have been much better if I had imagined it myself. The house is spacious, the area is very quiet, and the lakefront dock area is a nature lover's dream.
The description as provided is exactly what you find upon arrival. The house is clean and attractive. It is spacious and cozy at the same time. The basement is unfinished (as the owner stated) but we had a great time playing pool and listening to music from our youth on the record player. The kitchen has everything you could want, and is great for a family who wants to cook and socialize at the same time. If, for some reason you don't know where to find something, Chris and Betsy respond promptly to questions.
We spent days hiking, paddling, and relaxing. One day we went to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and learned while having fun.
I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a get away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. This property is a little slice of heaven to those who enjoy the peace of the natural world.
My family and I had a great week on this beautiful property. Even with 7 adults and two toddlers we had plenty of room to both enjoy each other's company and have some quiet time as well. This home is set up thoughtfully with excellent, high quality inside space, the 3 sided wrap around deck, some of it in the shade, some in the sun. The dock was lovely as well as was the walk down to it. Even the drive up the winding gravel road was a lovely experience.
We look forward to coming back, and I recommend it for people who like high end home amenities, waterfront access, privacy and peacefulness.
If I can add one item that would make the experience even better I would recommend a kayak or two to complement the quality canoe.
This home is spacious with a wide variety of sleeping arrangements that were perfect for our extended family gathering. It is very well equipped with an amazing supply of cookware and dishes.
The short path to the pond was well maintained and provided easy launch of our kayaks. The fishing was great. Lots of sunnies and perch for the kids to catch and for our more serious fishermen in the group we caught a pretty good size pike and small mouth bass.
The pool table in the basement was perfect for our one rainy evening. Thank you Chris and Betsy for being wonderful hosts.
This house was a perfect fit for my super active family. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking, biking and hiking on the surrounding trails. It is nestled back in the woods so you feel completely secluded. Plus it's only 3.7 miles from Donnelly's Ice Cream, very convenient if your like my family and like to go 2 times a day! It's close to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. This house is absolutely beautiful. Tons of space and all the amenities you could ever need on those rainy days. My family will definitely be back. I would recommend this place to anyone, although I'm tempted to keep this gem a secret! The owners' response rate to any questions before, during or after your visit is amazing. Very accommodating and generous.
We are situated close to Paul Smith's Visitor Information Center, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, and shops and restaurants in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. Miles of hiking trails abound. In the winter, most of the trails make for great cross country skiing. Lake Clear beach has a beautiful sandy beach and great swimming. Nearby Saranac Inn offers golfing. Many area boat launches allow you access to the Saranac chain of lakes.
There are many accesses to various pond and smaller lakes for canoeing and kayaking.
