Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Newly renovated 3 BR 2.5 BA single family home in one of the best neighborhoods in Washington, DC. The house is located in a quiet cul-de-sac off of beautiful Rittenhouse St., NW. Steps to the neighborhood Broad Branch Market and Lafayette Park, and .5 mile to Connecticut Ave. shops, restaurants, Safeway, Starbucks, etc.

The house is 1 mile from the Friendship Heights Metro station - a pretty walk or a brief bus ride on the E2 or E4 steps just from the house. Friendship Heights has the best shopping in the city -Tiffany, Cartier, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo and Gucci. It also has discount shops Nordstrom Rack, DSW, TJMaxx, Filene's Basement and everything in-between: Bloomingdales, Gap, JCrew, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers.

The house has three bedrooms and one full and one half bath upstairs plus a 3rd full bath in the basement. There is also an full bed in the basement with the 3rd new bathroom with shower. Downstairs is a beautiful living room, separate dining room, newly renovated large kitchen, and back family room with Smart TV. Air mattress available. The slate back patio has a table and chairs, grill and other patio furniture. Large, fully fenced backyard contains a trampoline, tree swing, hammock, basketball hoop and grill. Back garage on newly paved driveway leading out to network of alleys and quick escape to Lafayette park.

I live here otherwise so the drawers and closets are full. But with that, comes a full pantry with kitchen supplies and staples. It is a great house in a great spot and super fun for kids. FYI, there is a renter in the garage/studio apt. Very safe and quiet renter. Comes and goes through back of property.

About Susan Tanis

I'm a CPA, born and raised in DC. I live in the home when not rented, so closets and drawers are full. However, kitchen staples, spices, detergent, etc. is all available for use. Overall it is a very neat, uncluttered and well kept home - it is just not sterile like a hotel.

I rent the back garage/studio. The renter is safe, polite, quiet and will come and go through the back of the property. You will likely not see the renter at all.

Susan Tanis purchased this house in 2012

Thanksgiving Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We (4 adults + 4 kids) thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay at this lovely property. We were in town to spend Thanksgiving at my sister's, which was a convenient 15 minute walk away. The property is as described, complete with all the 'home away from home' amenities and then some: coffee maker, washer/dryer, hair dryer, full kitchen, smartTV, etc. The zip line and trampoline were an absolute hit with my daughter and niece (!) and having access to children's books in the home was a bonus. The owner was easily reachable by phone and text, and information about WiFi was available via the Property Guide on the VRBO app. A warm and charming home! Would recommend to others...

awesome place to stay with kids!

  • 5 of 5

The home was just as described. She let us check in early, which was great because I was traveling with three kids under age 9. The home was beautiful, and the outside was a little paradise! I think my kids loved playing at the house more than being in the city! There was a trampoline and zip line, hammock, outdoor seating and a grill. The inside was very comfortable as well. We were able to use wi-fi. The kitchen worked great and the beds and linens were fantastic. Would recommend this home to anyone!

Lovely property in a great neighborhood.

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 8 just stayed at the property for 3 nights. We were in the area to attend niece graduation at Uof Maryland. The house is very well appointed and the space is well used to give a sense of space to not too large areas.

On the day of arrival i was not able to make it in time to talk to owner; so one of my nieces did see her and received the so called tour of property. This was quite fast, and very superficial leaving enouh doubts about how AC worked?

How lights in back yard turn on and some other basic information.

Most of the information was in regards to the staples in kitchen and paper goods. The clothes dryer was left packed with clothes. So was the dishwasher.... owner mentioned cleaning people had left it like that but did not unloaded them herself.

It appeared she was in a hurry to leave.

The info on WiFi, etc was not given to my niece.

That night we had questions but was too late to call owner.

So i did call the next day and ask if she could come by to show how AC was controllef she answered she would but "she did not know how to set it, herself"

Saturday she came by again i was mot there, she showed my other niece what she said she knew about the AC control.....the she asked her ok to go upstair to bedroom for something she needed and had forgotten in house.

On monday ( day we were checking out) at 8:00 am Susan texted asking what time we would be leaving? Well at check out time.... we were still sleeping

and then to my surprise she knocks on the door at 8:25 am i opened the door and again she request if ok for her to come in "because she needed a dsughters uniform skirt she had firgotten in the house"

Well my nephew was sleeping in that bedroom so i told her "sorry i would not let her in"

This is exactly the same situation mentioned by a renter on December '16

Seems is SOP for the owner.

Yes people see she lives in the property, she leaves everything all over the house, but if she is collecting rent its not ok for her not to plan ahead and take out everything she and her kids might need during the period rented.

Its a weird feeling, and i felt she was like lendind the property to her family and or friends and was very informal.

I did not mind paying the daily rental, or cleaning fee but i do (for cleaning people who had left things half done) on our check in.

Suggest for owner to write guide to leave in house with details, AC,lights,

appliances, etc.... and if she is going to rent to make sure she takes everything they need.

Owner's Response: These guests were lovely guests and kept the house in great condition. I met a few of the family members who were very complimentary of my home and very nice to deal with. I believe the graduation festivities they hosted turned out well. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience on the A/C, outdoor lighting, and the departure day visit. I will take your recommendation to leave notes out for the A/C & exterior lights. The A/C is set for the entire week, which I do not know how nor do I want to change for guests for a couple of days. There is an easy way to override it for several hours at a time, which is what I showed the young lady and will now leave instructions on. I am happy to return a partial cleaning fee for the dishwasher and dryer being full. I work a FT job, so I got to the house at the same time as the niece for check in. I had to use a different service as my normal cleaning crew cancelled. They had not turned on the dishwasher full of dirty dishes or turned on the dryer w/wet sheets, so I figured better to turn those on. I explained this and apologized, but coming back to empty seemed intrusive. Again, happy to refund some of the cleaning fee for this imposition. And as for the 8:30AM visit - checkout time is 11AM, and often times people leave earlier to catch a flight. I had not heard back via text, so thought it was okay to knock and ask. I did not mean for it to be so offensive. I am a single mother with 3 young girls who works full time, am currently getting my MBA part time at Georgetown, and just survived breast cancer. I rent my home and share it with others to help make ends meet. I do my very best to get everything for all 3 of those girls every time I rent - but anyone with multiple children understands that sometimes things are missed. I've rented my house multiple times and only had this complaint one other time. So I take offense to "SOP". I think otherwise this review is fair and this woman is entitled to her opinion. The only other thing I take offense to is the comment that "she leaves everything all over the house". First, in my description, I explain that it is not a sterile rental and that we live there otherwise, there are also pictures that exactly match what you are getting. Second - I am an extremely clean/neat person and there is no clutter - it is simply a nicely decorated home, well kept, with personal items (pictures, etc.) per normal. You can't please everyone! But I am doing my best!

Beautiful neighborhood but a little too personal

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and our host was very gracious. Neighborhood was gorgeous and an easy walk to a park nearby. Centrally located to lots of different DC area activities with minimal traffic. Not a lot nearby to walk to as far as markets, coffee shops, etc as it is deep into a residential neighborhood with lovely older traditional colonial homes and just gorgeous in the fall. The house has a trampoline that my kids loved. My only criticism is that it felt like we were imposing on the hosts home as it is very "lived in". Most homes we have stayed at on vrbo/homeaway/airbnb that rent (especially at this price) have a very professional/depersonalized accommodations when renting out an owner's own home. The owner had quite a bit of trust for her guests as her mail was left easily accessed, clothes/shoes/personal items weren't locked away, kids bathroom had all the kids items lining the tub (down to the princess shampoo my son used to wash his hair) and at two points, the host needed to come get personal items from the house she needed for herself/kids. This wasn't a big inconvenience at all but felt like we had "ousted" them from their own home and didn't feel quite comfortable there. Never had this feeling before at a vacation rental. Most places will try and minimize the personal exposure to the renter and this felt more like we were crashing their pad for a few days but at a much steeper price. Lovely home though and great location. Would highly recommend a nearby restaurant Silver as it has breakfast at all hours and is open late.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the honest review. And I apologize for the disruption - I did not know my girls left their backpacks there. Typically I am out of town during rentals and have not had any other guests have this complaint. It was a one off, but I will do my best to ensure it doesn't happen in the future! I encourage all renters looking into my property to read this review and very carefully read my description of my property - which makes it very clear that my home is very lived in. I am a single mother of 3 young girls and share custody. I leave the day you arrive, and return the day you leave (with my kids). As opposed to being "ousted", I see it as being part of the sharing economy, offering a mutually beneficial arrangement: extra income for me, and a very well maintained, decorated, clean home for you. I make it very clear that closets and drawers are full - but the benefit to that is that the pantry, paper products, etc. are also full as well. Many rentals don't have TP or soap in the bathroom, much less olive oil, spices, ketchup, etc. My price point has gone up over time simply due to the economics of supply and demand. I was getting more offers than I could keep up with at a lower price point, so therefore raised it. My property is very well taken care of, in a great neighborhood, and is great for families with kids. But please keep in mind that it is by no means a sterile, typical, VRBO rental. That being said, I've had nothing but stellar reviews and great guests who have very much enjoyed my hospitality and home. Thanks!

We recently completed a five night stay while in town for our son's wedding at nearby Woodend Sanctuary. The owner has created an place where visitors can truly feel at home amongst the hubbub of D.C. We shared our house with our daughter's family and it could not have been more suitable for our 8 yr. old grandson. He was able to be a kid here -- outdoor space to move & play with the added bonus of the trampoline, basketball hoop, and zip line. When we hosted a brunch for close family members after the wedding everyone was so complimentery of her house and our luck in finding such an ideal location.

Beautiful house, beautiful neighborhood, amazing location, awesome backyard and helpful owner!

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for my family of four plus my father. The backyard provided hours of entertainment for my kids and the house was stocked with everything we could need. Not having closets wasn't a problem--Susan provides places to hang clothes. We had some questions while we there and Susan always responded quickly and was super helpful and a pleasure to work with! The neighborhood is gorgeous and very conveniently located near grocery stores, restaurants and other shopping. Thank you to Susan for making our trip so lovely!
