About Rob and Kim Maricle

Rob currently is employed in the High Tech industry as a Process Engineer. He enjoys spending time socializing with friends and family, loves Washington State Cougar football, and is learning the tricks and trade of being a sports fisherman. Kim is a sales associate at a retail clothing firm and prior to that, was a full-time-mom until our three grown kids “left the nest”. She enjoys being outdoors but also is very creative and recently pursued her interest in surrealism oil painting (the cabin will have a couple of her paintings). Together, we raised three kids who were all competitive swimmers; two of them swam competitively at the collegiate level. We are thankful that our swim-family days are behind us due to the long hours spent driving to and from practices and swim meets. We currently live on a floating home on the Columbia River which is also a respite from the daily grind.

Rob and Kim Maricle purchased this cabin in 2015

Why Rob and Kim Maricle chose Packwood

We simply love the outdoors and the small, community aspect of Packwood. It reminds us a lot of years gone by where one’s word was “good enough” in all situations and the locals are just down-to-earth, good people. Having grown up in a logging community, Rob loves being back in the woods away from the city sprawl. Kim is enamored with the beauty of the forest and looks forward to being able to hike and simply be in the fresh air. Both of us were snow skiers prior to having children and now have the opportunity to take up the sport again; especially since the White Pass Ski Area is only 17 miles away! The cabin purchase allows us to enjoy life away from the city (a “retreat” as it were). Our hope is to eventually pass the property along to our kids for their future enjoyment.

What makes this cabin unique

Location to all the various attractions in the area. The cabin is located 7 miles from the entrance to Mt. Rainer National Park with its many miles of hiking trails and scenery that gives one a real insight into the beauty found within the Cascade mountain range. Wildlife is almost taken for granted here; especially the elk that enjoy simply walking down the middle of Packwood. Our cabin is uniquely situated in front of a meadow that is one of the main paths for the elk as they move in and out of the forest seeking places to forage. Sitting under the stars on our deck or in the hot tub enjoying the stars cannot be described. It is simply one of the best ways we know to relax after a long day of hiking, wandering, or unwinding from our lives back in the Portland area.

Mt. Rainier National Park is a must see. It has numerous opportunities for hiking and views of the mountain that are just spectacular.....especially the trip to Paradise during late August / early September when the wild flowers are in bloom.

White Pass Ski area is only 17 miles away. It affords all of the conveniences of any ski area (food, ski rentals, and great skiing) but not the large crowds often seen at other Seatlle/Tacoma ski areas.

Riffe Lake is about 20 miles west on Highway 12. It is a Washington State park that affords fishing, water skiing, swimming, and picnicking.

Yakima is 75 miles east on Highway 12. The Yakima Valley affords some of the best wine tasting. The region is well known for its exquisite wines.

Great cabin, great view!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! This cabin has it all!!! It appears small from the outside, but all five of us had plenty of sleeping and eating space. We enjoyed the hot tub every night as well. Everything was meticulously clean and unbelievably comfortable. We were blessed with three sunny days, so we had amazing views of Rainier from our windows. There are so many details and amenities...four sleeping spaces, three bathrooms, espresso maker, multiples pots and pans, shampoo and hair dryer in the bathrooms, plenty of towels, washer and dryer...I could go on and on! The only minor thing I'd add to the cabin is bowls...our kids wanted cereal for breakfast and had to use coffee mugs (they survived). We had a great stay, and I'd definitely recommend this cabin to our friends and family.

Fantastic Get-A-Way!

  • 5 of 5

This lovely cabin was the perfect get-a-way with a quiet setting, a visit from Elk, so much hiking near by, and great internet (skype calls were great quality). All communications from owners were quality and clear. If we want a get-a-way in this area again, we would book here! Thank you Baby Bear!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words and we are so very glad that you enjoyed your stay at our cabin. We found the place in great shape after you left (thank you). It's nice to have people of such quality stay at our cabin. If, as you have noted, you need a get away here in Packwood, you are welcome back. Again, thank you for the nice review. Comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for three nights during a very hot week with our kids. We much appreciated the AC units the owners stationed upstairs and on the main level. There were lots of thoughtful details (baby gates at the stairs, good wifi, shampoo and conditioner in the showers), plus the beds and sheets were very comfortable with lots of pillows.

It was easy to get into Mount Rainier National Park for hiking--the house is about 50 minutes from Paradise and 20 from Grove of the Patriarchs or park entrance.

Check in and check out procedures were straightforward and we had no issues with anything. We would definitely come back.

Perfect cabin for our family

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect cabin for our family reunion. My three grown children all flew to be with us in Seattle. We hiked Mt Rainier and Mt St Helens and came back to the cabin to BBQ, soak in the hot tub and then catch up on our lives by the fire-pit. This is our second year at Baby Bear. Last year we were lucky enough to view a herd of elk passing in the early morning hours. No elk this year.

The showers are amazing, the beds and furniture are comfortable. All in all a perfect weekend get-away. The boys were surprised and thrilled that the Auto Show was taking place the same weekend in downtown Packwood.

Watch out in summer

  • 3 of 5

The house was easy to find, easy to get into. Not great curb appeal but quiet area with timber across the back. Three good size beds and a day bed made for plenty of sleeping in three levels. Kitchen had adequate stock but no bowls but mugs worked for ice cream. AT&T was unavailable but Wifi worked fine for calls; Sprint was available.

Most important was that the place was very hot due to the temps being in the 90s. There are two portable units and they don't keep up with it. They are also very noisy to the point of putting the TV on 100 percent to hear it. When I opened the windows in the evening innumerable gnats came thru the screen so they had to be closed. At some point the circuit breaker popped in the upstairs circuit the AC ran on so I woke up and explored to find the breaker panel in the basement to restore this necessary item.

With central air, some spices (salt pepper min) and some bowls it could be a 5 star place. I'd have given 4 if no heat/noise. 5 with better kitchen loadout.

Checkin and checkout were effortless.

Owner's Response: Wow. Just wow. We are sorry that you ran into these problems. We'd like to address your issues so future renters will get both sides of the story. We don't understand the issues of the lack of bowls since we had put at least 10 bowls at the cabin weeks before in response to another renter's feedback. If we recall correctly, the temperature was in the triple digits for multiple days taxing the room a/c units to keep the cabin as cool as possible. We do our best to update our cabin as money is available to us. For example, we put the a/c units in place about one year ago because there were not any at all. They are a stop-gap measure and work really well when not facing extreme heat conditions that you experienced. We hope to update when we can and as we can afford. As for the breaker turning off, we will investigate the circuit that the a/c unit is plugged into to see what can do to prevent that in the future. We are sorry that you had to look for it in the middle of the night. Thank you for letting us know about it Lastly, with respect to the gnats, the screens are fine mesh that came with the windows. We visited the cabin after you left and did not notice any problems with the screens. So we are at a loss of a way the gnats were able to get through the screens into the cabin. Kim and Rob

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We saw elk twice from our windows over a four night stay. The view of Mt. Rainier from the sofa was great. Convenient to Mt. Rainier National Park. We also went to see Mt. St. Helens. So convenient to the grocery store for supplies (literally minutes down the street). The hot tub was great and we had s'mores at the fire pit. Thanks for having such a great place to rent.
