|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Just 2 minutes from the Juniata River and 8 minutes from Raystown Lake, this pristine mountain retreat is one of just two houses on a 145-acre forested tract and offers you a unique blend of the best of both worlds-- relaxation and solitude on site, coupled with easy access to off-site local attractions appealing to a variety of interests. The newly renovated cottage and surrounding property is a destination in and of itself where guests can enjoy the comforts of home amid the beauty of nature... Already home to several species of "lifetime birds" identified in three official counts this year, our property was selected two years ago to participate in the Golden-Winged Warbler Conservation Project, an effort to help boost the songbird's dwindling numbers. Proximity to Raystown Lake and the Juniata River accounts for the Bald Eagle sightings here as well as those of Golden Eagles. Our maintained walking trails beckon you to exercise, to reflect, to explore, and to pick wild blackberries and blueberries in season. In the early morning hours and at dusk, kick back on the deck and look for the appearance of turkeys and deer as they emerge from the woods... Evenings in the backyard around a fire are a prelude to clear nights for stargazing--the Milky Way is visible here as there is no light pollution to interfere with your view... For those who want to cocoon, curl up to a book or magazine (ours or one of your own); snuggle in to watch a movie from our collection or a favorite TV show, or tune in to the big game... Just a short drive off the mountain opens up some opportunities for other adventures. For enthusiasts of striper and other sport fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, etc., Snyders Run Boat Launch is just an 8-minute drive, offering access to Raystown Lake, 30 miles long and with a 110-mile coastline. The lake also boasts hiking and biking trails (Nearby Rothrock Outfitters rents bikes), and a beach for swimming... The river experience is equally inviting (and just 2 minutes from the cottage doorstep); for those who don't have kayaks or canoes, Rothrock Outfitters not only rents out equipment but also provides transportation to and from the river... Nearby Swigart Museum (the oldest car museum in the United States) and its extensive collection of antique cars will not disappoint vintage car enthusiasts--at any given time, 30-35 of the 150 vehicles in the collection are on display... Rail enthusiasts will enjoy the area's rich railroad history, including the Horseshoe Curve (an engineering marvel in its day) near Altoona and The East Broad Top Railroad in Rockhill Furnace whose 36-inch track is the oldest remnant of the Narrow Gauge rail in the United States. And the community of nearby Water Street is part of the Rails to Trails system. A favorite rail-related hike and must-do is the Thousand Steps at Mount Union (count 'em!), at one time the only path up Jack's Mountain for the railmen whose work awaited them at the top; and while there are several nice golf courses in the area, the most scenic--and most challenging-- is that of the American Legion Country Club in Mount Union... For Juniata College, Grier School, and Penn State fans and family, the cottage is within easy driving distance to events at those schools--15, 30 and 50 minutes respectively... Theater-goers can tap into the area's rich stage traditions at the McConnellstown Playhouse, the Stone Arch Playhouse in Lewistown, the Boal Barn in Boalsburg, and the traveling productions of the State College Community Theater... Winding and scenic, the country roads of this area lend themselves to long motorcycle, convertible and bicycle rides, among them through Big Valley on Route 655 where travelers can observe and learn about the culture of the local Amish whose simple, quiet lifestyle contributes to the tranquility of life in the valley... Lincoln Caverns, Penns Cave and Indian Caverns provide guests a closeup look at parts of the vast cave system in Central Pa.... Local amusement parks promise a day of fun for kids and adults alike --DelGrosso in Bellwood, Lakemont in Altoona... State Parks are located at Greenwood Furnace, Whipple Dam, Reed's Gap, Poe Valley, Licking Creek, Canoe Creek, etc. and their beaches/swimming areas, hiking/biking trails, and picnic facilities constitute free family fun... And for the wine aficionados, Brookmere Winery on Route 655 in Big Valley and the Seven Mountains Winery on Route 322 toward State College have broad appeal... Is there more? Sure-- come see for yourself. At the end of each day, you'll enjoy settling in to the peace and comfort of cottage life.
We recently stayed at the cottage by Raystown Lake. It was truly wonderful. The cottage was charming and clean. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. The Loves had filled the bird feeder by the back window so we had many visitors to watch from the reading chair placed next to the window. On our first day, we explored the property and the many trails. Because the property is being transformed into a bird "sanctuary" the woods and meadows are filled with all sorts of birds. Walking the trails we saw birds, plants, fungi and animal tracks. Our favorite was rhinoceros trail along which the grandchildren of the Loves had placed plastic rhinos (and one hippopotamus) for people to find. A magical treasure hunt for our children (ages 4, 6 and 11). The children also enjoyed the simple pleasure of the small tree fort with two swings attached to a large tree. By the back door, the Loves had placed a bucket with kindling, gloves and lighter for the fire pit just outside, as well as a table cloth for the picnic table. Everything was so thoughtful and neat.
The property was an oasis of calm and then we met the Loves and Scout. They were so generous, friendly and welcoming. Mr. Love took us on a walk of the property. Mrs. Love brought us board games and books that she thought the children might like. We played frisbee with their dog Scout. Scout was a joy to be around. I have a child who is allergic to dogs so we usually can not stay in places that have dogs. Because Scout is not allowed in the cottage, we were able to have the best of both worlds. A dog to play with without the allergies. As we were leaving my daughter asked me if I thought their last name was Love because they were so nice.
I recommend this wonderful cottage. The Loves are wonderful hosts and the property is beautiful.
My family spent the weekend at the cottage and wished that we had been able to stay longer. So cozy and had everything (and more) that we needed for the weekend. Not even the rain spoiled our stay. Beds were so comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked, and the location was beautiful. We will be visiting again. Thank you Natalie and Don for sharing your beautiful home with us.
Don and Natalie are awesome hosts. They greeted us personally and were extremely helpful providing us with information about the cottage. They kindly provided suggestions for local attractions and shared great places to visit during our stay. This cottage is immaculate, very well appointed, inviting and simply a pleasure to spend time in. The kitchen is clean, very nicely equipped, great for preparing all your meals. (If you don’t wish to cook there are several local restaurants to choose from in the area.) The beds are by far the most comfortable we have experienced in all our travels. The cottage is picture perfect. The peaceful surroundings of the cottage beckon you to explore the beautiful outdoors. Our family enjoyed nature as we walked on the well maintained walking trails surrounding the cottage on Don and Natalie’s property. Our children age 8 & 11 had a wonderful time playing and exploring and searching for wildlife. Our 8 year old took a very special liking to Don and Natalie’s sweet dog, this was a pleasurable experience for our daughter. Our family enjoyed picnics by the cottage. And we all had a nice time roasting marsh mellows and sitting by the fire pit in the evenings. We will absolutely recommend this cottage to friends and family. Thank you again for being such great hosts and allowing us to spend quality family time in your lovely cottage. It was a pleasure meeting the both of you and we hope to return again soon.

We stayed in the cottage for a week. We were looking for someplace fairly close to home, (within 4 hour drive). Upon arrival, we found the cottage to be exactly as advertised. The layout was perfect and the amenities were well thought out for whatever a guest might need. The cottage is superbly maintained both inside and out. Don & Natalie make sure you have whatever you may need from dishes to laundry capabilities to cleaning products. They could not be more accommodating and friendly. The property has walking trails all around that are excellent for observing birds of all kinds and other wildlife. You are very close to Raystown Lake as well as many other local spots ideal for shopping or just enjoying. We took advantage of the local shopping and restaurants along with Rothrock Outfitter for kayaking both on the lake and on the river. We specifically enjoyed Boxer's and Mimi's in Huntingdon for lunch and dinner. We did take a couple of days to travel to State College and Altoona to do some sight seeing. Both are within a 45 minute drive of the cottage. We would highly recommend this property to our friends and relatives. In fact, we are going to book a 3 day weekend in October for seeing the fall foliage on and around Raystown Lake.
We had a wonderful weekend stay at The Cottage, which was equipped with anything we needed. The quality of all of the appliances and kitchen utensils was much higher than expected. Our party of five was very comfortable. Its close proximity to the lake's recreational areas made it easy to go back and forth each day. We also enjoyed an evening by the fire in the backyard, and a morning stroll through the lovely hiking paths on the grounds. Natalie and Don were wonderful hosts, and were very helpful in making recommendations for the local attractions. They were also very flexible for an early check in and a late checkout. We hope to stay again on our next trip to the lake.
This house was clean, cozy, and thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed for our girls weekend. The 3 of us fit quite comfortably!
We would definitely return and recommend!
