I was born in Hereford England...but travelled extensively before I found my 'utopia' in Portugal...between Casa no Ar in Penedo,Sintra (rental property see #73582) and Monte Branco in Monsaraz(rental property # 59751). My children were born and brought up in Portugal; there are still many of their books and games. Anthony (born in 1983) is in the wine business and catering which is great for guests wishing a special dinner party or wedding event. Francis (born in 1985) is a web designer with lots of famous California film star clients...he is responsable for my own websites. Casa no Ar and Monte Branco have many happy memories for us.
Having studied Interior Design it was with great pleasure that I restored the houses from ruins in traditional Portuguese style , and furnished with rustic antiques and lots of "azulejos"
It is most satisfying to now share my homes with others!
The houses are set in the woodlands above Penedo which is a small friendly village with one shop/bakery, one cafe/restaurant ...with a fountain gushing fresh spring water and unpolluted air of Sintra's protected mountain forests....yet close to beautiful sandy beaches, cosmopolitan Cascais/Estoril and just 30 minutes from Lisbon with all its city attractions. It was the perfect choice to bring up my children...and now my grandchild who can run and play safely in the village square
I loved my stay and can't wait to return and explore the area further. Sintra National Park is an extraordinary gem and I'm so happy I discovered it. I stayed in the wettest wildest winter weather Jane remembers in all her years living there, and I was still staggered by the beauty of the place. I loved collecting pine cones to use for kindling for the fireplace. Jane was a great host, there when I needed her, a fount of fascinating local knowledge and wonderful stories, and also happy to leave me alone when I wanted to be a hermit. She has created several really lovely, comfortable, holiday spaces blending local antiques and modern fittings with style. I hired a car but only used it to go to and from the airport, for an entire month I walked everywhere I needed to go. As far as the Westernmost point in mainland Europe, Cabo da Roca. The lush landscapes, medieval stone staircases woven through villages scattered down hillsides, the magical Capuchin’s monastery; I could wander for a century. The farmers market in Almoçageme is glorious, buying delicious food straight from the growers for bargain prices was a weekly delight. And the hilly scenic walk home helped to offset some of the kilos of delicious almond cookies I indulged in! This is a fantastic base for rambling over hills and headlands, beaches and forests, exploring historical sights, or just staying still soaking up the wonderful view.

In lovely location, near wonderful beach and historic town this delightful property was SO let down by health hazards. Two of the bathrooms had broken basins, loos and enamel coming off the baths. Steps from the pool need attention and are unlit at night so hazardous. Loose and very uneven cobbles round the pool area. Five St Bernard dogs at property below kept us all awake every night. Beds in the loft creaked so much the occupants were kept awake as was the person in the bedroom below. The villa just needs a bit of money spending on it then it would be perfect. Then I would recommend it!
We stayed at Jane´s house CASA NO AR for a month : me , my husband and our two little daughters. We had a wonderful time. The place was magical and Jane, the most caring hostess. The house was recovered by Jane and is full of charm and special things. Penedo is a place of beauty with so many enjoyable places and warm people. The view from the balcony is pure overwhelming beauty. Mrs. Fernanda , the house keeper , was always making sure we had all we needed and so was Jane. We were super happy to have the chance of living in such magical place.

What a great place you have for a perfect bike riding weekend. The lunch break under the covered bbq/dining area, amazing view! Sintra mountain is full of great trails, for hard downhill riding or just simple MTB riding.
Pity it was too cold for a dip in the pool, but next time in April!
look forward to our return. thank you!
We were upgraded to the larger cottage, Casa No Ar, and couldn't have been more thrilled. Beautiful space, views, everything you want! The windy roads take a bit of getting used to, especially in a large car! Jane is a lovely host, anything you need, just ask. Would stay forever!
Very good house, typical in Lisboa with a fantastiv view !!!
We had a great stay and have to say that the location was superb. The views from the front of the property and from the garden and terraces behind were wonderful. You had the Moorish castle and Penna palace set on the hills to the east, the Colares valley to the north and the Atlantic Coast in the West. It took us about 45 minutes to drive to the villa from the airport on easy roads. However there are narrower roads around the property that test your driving abilities. The house was very neat and tidy with a rustic character which seemed well suited to the environment. There was plenty of space to allow everyone to find their own quiet place to read or to rest. There were plenty of bathrooms and facilities to shower after a busy day. The villa was well serviced with cooker, washing machine, dishwasher, fridges and freezers etc. The maid service was excellent with fresh towels and bed linen half way through our stay. The pool was a godsend for the children and adults alike and was in use everyday. The information pack within the villa was a nice touch and directed us to places that we would have never have gone to. The location to the main heart of the World Heritage Site was the greatest advantage. Although we had done our research on the area before we arrived we had not realized the proximity to the main tourist sites most of which we could reach within 20 minutes. We had planned to go to Lisbon for a few days but there was so much to see and do locally that we didn't bother. We did not each out much at all but instead relied upon the local supermarket in Sintra for the staples and the local weekend farmers market for excellent local produce. The local beach was really good with good surf and lots of sand to build with. All in all it was a great stay away from the crowds but close enough to visit places at your own pace. Sintra did get busy in the middle of the day but staying so close allowed us to get there at 0930 when the palaces opened and to leave them when things got busy and too hot a couple of hours later. We saw very few tourists outside Sintra itself which was great. The locals were charming and very friendly. We had a great time and returned to the UK very relaxed.
CASA NO AR - CASA LUA - CASA NAS NUVENS/ THE STUDIO in Penedo, a small village set high up in the woodlands of the mountain of Sintra, above the town of Colares, and near to Almoçogeme and the beach of Adraga, both just a 5 minute drive away. The beaches of Praia Grande, famous with surfers, and Praia das Maças with its restaurants and bars, are about 10 minute drive. Sintra with its historical palaces and monuments is 15 minutes. Around the mountain the other way, one passes Cabo da Roca, the most western point of Europe, on to Guincho beach, good for windsurfing, to Cascais with its Marina, and small pedestrian streets, full of boutiques, cafes, bars, restaurants - 20 minute drive. Adjoining Estoril is famous for its Casino. Lisbon, with its numerous city attractions, is about a 40 minute drive, or a very pleasant train ride along the coast from Cascais. Ericeira, a small fishing village is a 30 minute drive northwards, as is Mafra with its enormous monastery and Malveira with a fascinating weekly Thursday’s market
